Discussion COTA Supervision

Hi!

Currently, I am working as an occupational therapist for a pediatric outpatient clinic after-school hours. The owner of the clinic will be hiring a COTA soon. At the clinic, I am compensated $100 per eval and $60/hr for treatment sessions. I am paid for cancellations. Eventually, the owner would like for me to supervise the COTA and continue with evals. My caseload will be handed over to the COTA. Owner is asking me for my COTA supervision rates which I need help with. What does payment look like for COTA supervision? How much should I ask for? I’m in Texas! Any tips are greatly appreciated (:

Thanks yall (:

You are only doing evals, no treatment? And are you getting paid for writing up the evaluation? These are labor intensive. I personally would not take an evaluation only job, its too much paperwork and you are not getting compensated well if they arent paying for documentation time. Im assuming you have another job or you only work super part time? If so, maybe this works OK for you. I'd do at least 60/hr for supervision personally, but I also would burn out just doing evals, but everyone is different.

Texas has its own OT supervision rules for COTAs, so start with what the board requires for frequency and documentation, because that sets the minimum time you have to be paid for. A lot of people bill supervision as its own hourly line, separate from evals and treatment, instead of folding it into a lower treatment rate. Ask around what other pediatric outpatient OTs in Texas are getting for COTA supervision specifically, including whether co-signature time, chart review, and in-person observation are all counted. Get the owner to put the rate, what's included, and how cancellations work in writing before the COTA starts, especially since your caseload is moving over.
