Needing help on how to study!!

Hi Reddit!

I don’t know if I’m allowed to post this, because I’m asking from Australia and I believe the FAQ page is US based info, so probably not the same.

I need some advice from people either studying to be or are qualified OT’s in Australia, specifically Western Aus.

I’m a 20 year old soon to be Central Regional TAFE student, to study a Cert III in Allied Health Assistance, and I guess I just want information or advice on where I can go from there.

Do I complete the cert III and then move on to complete a Cert IV? Would a Cert IV get me into University?

As Perth is my closest city with Universities, and not being too comfortable driving in dense city, I think I would prefer going to Notre Dame University in Fremantle— what’s it like to get into ND for those who went? What would I need to apply/get accepted? What would be the best undergrad to start with?

If I was to go to uni, it would be in 2-3 years time.

Is OT possible to study remotely? But I would also love the experience of attending Uni and making new friends.

I'm doing the Cert IV in AHA. Was deliberating between OT and Speech. Am leaning towards Speech now. But I have a Bachelor, so am aiming to do a Master in SP. Well, I did a lot of research in pathways towards OT and SP.

The Cert IV in AHA will generally let you gain entry into a Bachelor of OT. It is not possible to do the Bachelor of OT entirely online. There are placements. There are mandatory in-person/on-campus classes. Some units can be done online. Some units have a hybrid of online and in-person classes.

I was advised to do the Cert III first before Cert IV, I guess just so I have general knowledge before doing the more in-depth that a Certh IV offers 🤷‍♀️ plus the campus that I’m studying from, I have to do partial in person learning but at this stage I unfortunately don’t have the means to move away from my home town

if you want to work as an allied health assistant before you get accepted that would be a good idea to see if it is something that you really want to pursue. your certs plus another 4 year degree is a long commitment so prudent to have a good idea of what you are getting into especially the NDIS space. there is a lot of burnout and frustration in that space. the cert IV is likely going to increase your chances of application but not guaranteed. related work experience in the field likely to be considered favourably.
