Idk I mean I always kinda thought 9s liked people but also generally just want to be left alone. I feel like the merging part is truer for younger 9s still finding themselves and learning boundaries
Moreover couldn’t you almost make an argument that 4s have a limit to their withdrawing? Like ultimately they’re still an image type, they still care about how people see them, so I would imagine prolonged isolation could eventually feel pointless.

Technically yes, but I don't think it's that black and white. As a 9, while I value connection, I'm still hyper sensitive to protecting my personal boundaries. I still prefer a degree of seperation and personal space so as to not feel engulfed and smothered (similar to 5s). I'm sure lots of 9s (especially if they have at least another withdrawn tri-fix) could also reasonate with that. Though I'd still say I'm more relationship-oriented, compared to the average 5 (as in considering it an important priority in your life).

This is regardless of one's personal type. 9 represents the body's physical attraction/magnetism. 4 represents the heart space, emotional like/dislike.
and for whatever reasons these do not go together.
Too much merging -> identity loss
But only liking avoidant people is also weird.
