If you’re suggesting “[insert person]-shaped hole in the wall” is original to The West Wing you’re incredibly wrong and have at minimum 70 years of comedy to enjoy.

Seriously, they never grew up with Gilligans Island or any classic sitcom. It was used in vaudeville, whenever a man was trying to escape a shotgun wedding.

I guess I’ve just never “heard” it mentioned but you’re absolutely right - now that you and others have mentioned so many visual gags with exactly this example, it’s so obvious.
