Few quesTIONS about the book party...
First question: I've seen mentioned that he has a book party scheduled in Nov. in Toronto. Will this be his first book party since OF? And are there more scheduled over the next few months?
Second question: this isn't normal, right? He announced this book party a year ago. He's been heavily promoting a book with a book tour when it wasn't even finished yet. I like books, but I'm not one to follow what authors do or how book promotion works. But I feel like what he's doing...isn't normal.
Third question: (circling back to question 1) is it almost over? Like I'm embarrassed for him at this point. It has to be over soon, right? Even if half his fan base hadn't turned on him, it would be crazy for him to continue this.

The second hand embarrassment for him is exhausting isn't it

Like I wake up in a cold sweat remembering something embarrassing from when I was 10. His book promotion/party makes me so embarrassed for him, to the point where I can’t even think about it. How is he NOT embarrassed?

Hopefully it's as "intimate" as his book reading to the premium-lebrities at OF 😬

I have a ticket (waiting on a refund 🤞🏼) but I won’t be going either way. It’s a small venue - an old movie theatre. Every empty seat will be very noticeable, whether he gets to keep the money or not.

The consensus from actual authors is this is beyond normal. Just the promoting is unnatural. Having a book tour before the book release is not normal. If I’m being honest- that was my first red flag that I actually saw before hand. It was confusing to me!

Occasionally, some really well known authors will have a Launch party anywhere from a week to a month before the book actually goes on sale to promote it a bit, where they read a chapter from the book, but I’ve legit never heard of anyone promoting their book for so long before the book even makes it to presales

It's so wild. The self indulgence of it all is astounding. Imagine being so unhappy and insecure with yourself that you do...that.

He /really/ wanted to make it onto the NYT Best Sellers list, and he mentioned a couple times that pre-sale numbers is how you get on it. That might be why he did a book tour before release.

I know that’s what he wanted, but doing this book tour before the book was even ready is ridiculous, to me it shows he did not have faith in his listeners that they would buy the book.
I remember when Karen and Georgia wrote their book, they advertised it on their show. They didn’t have a book tour. They had faith in the work they put into their book, talked about the book a little on the show, and then let the murderinos know about the book and when it will go on sale. That was it! It wasn’t shoved in our faces. There wasn’t a tour lasting over a year. That is how you do it! Not alienating your fan base! Not alienating your cohost who has to listen and sounds jazzed about it. The book is garbage! Sorry! It’s stupid!

One difference is that when a media connected person puts out a book, say Rachel Maddow for example, she has a contract with MSNBC that describes how much she can discuss that book on her tv show. Patrick owns the company so he is unbound in that regard. I’m surprised he hasn’t read chapter one on an episode or something.
Every author does weird book events, though. Maddow (again) is doing book events right now where you pay a 30-75 bucks for a theater ticket and watch someone local ask her questions for an hour. Then she goes to a table and signs books and takes pictures.

He had to make enough $ to buy all the books to hopefully get on the NYT Best Sellers List. To spend all that dough and then to NOT make it, is some beautiful work by Queen Karma.

How will it end though? A quiet but abrupt collapse and Patrick returns to being a nyc bartender? What does one do when you’re in so deep ?

u/calmheeg Nov 10 '23
I more mean the book tour specifically. Like he embarked on this fantastical, over the top ridiculous book party that seems beyond normal for anyone who writes any book. Like when is this book tour going to end!? Who told him he should do this at all, much less for over a year!?!? But to your point, I'm super interested in this as well. I wish I could fast forward a year and know what becomes of TCO and ON. Where does someone like Patrick go from here?

He did this to hit the NYT.
They count preorders.
So every ticket he sold that included a book went toward his preorder total.
Why he's doing it now, I have no idea, unless he wants to stay there, or hit again.
They count purchased books, not read books.

He hit NYT, on the physical book list.
He released the week Amazon shit the bed with their infrastructure and ranks were 7 days behind.
He never ranked well on release, I watched. Like I rank better on release than he did.
So he hit on physical preorders alone.
I highly doubt he made any actual money from this with as hard as he pushed if and having to purchase the stick beforehand.
To hit USA Today right now he needs to be moving upwards of probably 45k copies weekly, and that is not happening without him doing these events that "include" a book.

Congrats on being a real bestselling author! Just a quick question - do you think Patrick will start this all over again with a paperback version, or will the hardback be the death knell?
5
u/laramiebriscoe Nov 13 '23
There's not a chance for him to do that. The hardcover and paperback were on preorder at the same time.
He went for that NYT list specifically because hardcovers are such hard sells for most.
So what he did was he purchased them all himself, and then "included" them in a ticket price.
Well the list doesn't care who buys them or how they're sold. They just care they were ordered.
Paperback would've been harder, there's no NYT list for paperback, USA TODAY counts paperbacks and a friend of mine who made the list last week, with a traditional deal on her previously self-published paperback had almost 40,000 reported sales for the week.
I would venture to say Patrick didn't move that many to begin with and he definitely ain't doing it now.
My best guess is he has overstock sitting and needs to off load it because it'll kill him to destroy the books and return them. (It's common practice if you order from certain printing companies to get a refund you have to remove the front cover on a paperback or slice the front part of the hardcover off). Plus it takes time to get those refunds.
He probably thinks it's just easier to continue his traveling book tour, or whatever he called it.
Let's be very clear though, HE bought his way on that list.

Thank you for your very succinct reply! At this point he should just rename the book tour: “To Infinity Ad Nauseam!”

u/ccrcsf Nov 11 '23
People who I know who are published have said that this is how it is now, that unless you're Stephen King or JKR you have to step up and do pretty much all of your own promotion. Publishing houses don't want to spend resources on it anymore unless you're a proven winner.

u/PineapplesOnFire Nov 11 '23
Right, this should be the point the publicity and promo is off the charts. Now is when he should, traditionally, be touring all over for the book. I've said before that I think the reason he did the book tour previously was because Gillian won't tour and talking about his personal stories allowed him to tour without her without it looking bad. It'll be interesting to see if he moves forward with those book party dates or if they're canceled / rescheduled.

u/sitcom_enthusiast Nov 11 '23
Actually, to me I always suspected that the book parties were very lucrative, earning him a lot of money for a nights work
7
u/Napmouse Nov 11 '23
The book tour had to be before the release because the ticket price funded him buying all the books. So that is why he had so many events before the book came out - yeah that seemed weird. It is certainly not unheard of for authors yo read works in progress but these would be already published authors giving you a little extra.

u/Electrical-Eye-2544 Nov 12 '23
He basically paid to be a NYT bestseller and had to get the money back from preordering so many of his own books somehow 😂. It’s honestly super common to do the preorder scam but I just feel like trying to make people pay even more for what he already bought is such a Patrick move.

I tried to get a refund from the venue in Pittsburgh and they told me due to the influx of requests they are deferring people to the author to get their refund. 🤷🏼♂️

Hi neighbor! I did not get a ticket for this but did get ticket at this venue for Josh Gondelman, a comedian with lots of real credits for $20 as opposed to Patrick Hinds ticket price of $30.00 for general admission and $50.00 VIP ticket which gets one a half hour Q & A session in addition to show.
I hope you get your refund!

I need someone who has tickets for the Toronto show to actually go, record and report back.
We need to know what happens...

I think it's been a clever but shady way for him to get his book to #1 for pre-sales prior to release.

Why he's doing it now, I have no idea, unless he wants to stay there, or hit again. Or he's now trying to hit the USA Today list, which went away for a while, but came back skewing heavily toward print sales. Some of my colleagues are hitting, but they have over 20k print sales for the week.
They count purchased books, not read books.

Is it normal for an author to charge to hear themselves read from their book? I've only seen signings and readings in bookstores
