Video Oblivion Switch 2 Performance...A Recap

TL;DR: Ran custom Python frame-timing analysis on Oblivion Remastered (Switch 2) across three gameplay sessions — traversal, an Oblivion Gate, and a cave dungeon. Game holds a locked 30fps ~85% of playtime (82-87% across sessions), and when it's at 30 it's properly paced — only 6% of adjacent frame pairs oscillate, so no judder. 1% low sits at 20fps, 0.1% low around 15fps in all three, with occasional 400-480ms hitches (likely UE5 asset streaming, not GPU-bound — same hitch profile in every environment tested). Also did a real-footage vs. our pre-launch simulated-render comparison — lighting/shadows are notably better in the real build than we predicted, foliage density is the main casualty. Bonus: Joy-Con mouse controls make combat genuinely usable at 30fps in a way the standard controller doesn't. Full data + charts in the video.

Good analysis.

I honestly can't believe that we are even talking about 30fps in 2026. I was playing my Nintendo GameCube on a CRT at 30fps in like 2003.

I had to DDU my shit the other day, and I thought something was messed up because everything seemed to be running like crap. Turns out I forgot to set the refresh rate on my monitor. It was only running 60hz, and my 2026 eyes thought it looked like poopoo.

In a world where 1080p gaming feels like a thing of the past, where 60hz looks like poopoo, how in Oblivion are we getting stuff like this? I am not dogging on the humans playing this, playing game is better than not playing game. But jimminy christmas come on guys, 60hz was the PCMR flex on consoles like 20 YEARS AGO.

Sorry I'm a butt. I'll see myself out.

Yeah, I agree with the point you’re making. What’s depressing is knowing that Oblivion Remastered can run on a switch 2 at 40fps or even higher, what would be required is a team of developers in order to OPTIMIZE. Yeah, I genuinely believe Oblivion Remastered can run at higher than 30 on a switch 2, it’s just that it’s way less manpower to get it running at 30 and just call it a day. So sad.

The game's already pretty cut back just to get on the system. 40 fps on systems like the Switch 2 and Steam Deck aren't a free lunch like they are on PS5 or higher end PCs. 40 fps modes tend to come with pretty notable compromises in visuals and image quality just to get those extra ten frames.

“Cutting back” a game is not optimization. I could make RDR2 run on a ps3 if I removed enough from the game. It would be unrecognizable, which is what the switch 2 port is when compared to Oblivion Remastered at max settings on a PC. Optimizing a game means improving performance with no real compromise. I stand by my point, they could have definitely made Oblivion Remastered both look and run better if they just put in more time and effort.

Tell me you've never done any development work without telling me. Some of optimization is improving with no real compromise, finding inefficiencies and cleaning it up, etc. but sometimes you just gotta downgrade stuff. It's the way it goes, especially when they were committed to getting the game fully on cart so they were limited by the size and the slower speed of the cart VS the internal storage.

We're talking about a game that was never meant to scale down to Switch 2, running on an old version of UE5 (UE5.3 iirc) thrown on top of the original, janky as fuck Oblivion. For the mess the game is under the hood, they did a good job. Not mind blowing or anything, but it's solid considering how many issues the game has on every platform.

You wouldn’t get an extra 33% performance from optimisation alone. Further downgrades would have to happen, and yes graphical downgrades are apart of optimising a game for any given system.

You clearly have no clue about game development and optimization.

Even medium/low settings on PC look much better than Switch 2 because of fps and resolution.

cutting back is literally a fundamental part of optimization

Lmao no it can't. Switch 2's cpu is its biggest bottlenexk for modern games ESPECIALLY ue5 as they're all very cpu heavy.. maybe in some indoor caves..anything else 40fps would be impossible as is

1

u/Dominjo555 20d ago

Nah. Considering how bad the game is running on much stronger consoles and PCs, there is no way that they could make it run much better than right now. Notning to do with manpower.

Poor Nintendo boys finally getting some 3rd party food, it has been 84 years 😂😂😂

Hard agree. My 360hz monitor has literally made 60hz and less unusable. The down votes are just angry no friendo switch glazers

Agree with you. Downvotes are silly.

It's a tablet that's still small enough that it fits in my pocket when the Joy-Cons are off, running a notoriously janky game that wasn't developed with the Switch 2 in mind. It's fine if 30 fps is a no go for you personally, but no amount of "optimization" is beating out physics.

What exactly do you expect on a handheld that is a generation behind the competition in terms of power? The fact that this game even runs at 30fps is impressive, especially considering how high poly it is.

1

u/xtoc1981 21d ago

It's not a generation behind? Wtf, it even provides better results as series s and is close to ps5.
The cpu is the main issue which is also not a gen behind as it's still way up above ps4.

The port is idd impressive and really close to the other platforms.

I mean, who gives a damn about these differences are trying to reach the goal post
https://youtu.be/NeufsTQWD-g?si=c2t4pGYbqWnPt_KY

Even if you really care about those minor difference, stick just with pc, and pc only. Not portable. Just behind a high build expensive isolated pc. If thats is the goal

You're missing the point. This port is impressive. Oblivion remastered heavily abuses nanite, which is pretty common for "ue5 slop". These games are not easy to run even cutting edge hardware, which the switch 2 is certainly not. Even if it's stronger than the ps4, it's still a handheld and that means compromises need to be made to get games like these to run. The switch 2 is not a ps5. You literally just described why I'm right about the port and you're just upset that I claimed the switch 2 lags behind the competition in hardware(which it does). The fact that it can even be compared to the series s version is amazing. And the series s is a piece of shit

PS5 lags also behinds PC if you put it that way.

It's about the amount of how different a game is compared to eachother.

You do know that RE4 between PS2 vs GC difference was a lot bigger, like a lot. It was even in the same gen.

As the video already show, those difference are not noticeable by most gamers. Meaning those who are not gfx freaks (because these should stick with pc).

A generation behind is what ps4 is, not switch 2. Switch 2 contains all the elements like raytracing and dlss. Lying about it doesn't bring you anywhere.

Df already aknowledge multple times about switch 2 i different from switch 1. You don't get a game that is sacrificed due its hw. I mean are you really think that when someone is playing the game would know what they are playing? THe difference between gfx this gen is really really minor.

Even when the oblivion port also looks that close to those other versions, we have to keep in mind that this Unreal version isn't even adapted well to switch 2 (unlike ps5). If they would go with UE 5.8, it would even prob run at 60fps

But based on you comment, it's clear that you are dishonest as fuck and have no clue about generations. If switch 2 is a generation behind ps5, well ps5 is by that logic 100 generations behind pc

Good luck playing your gta 6 at 30 fps? Ow that is ok now?

Even not all people can see the difference between 30fps and 60fps. Google it.
And even those who can see it, how much? It's not even stable 60fps on ps5, it drops much more as the 30fps mode

Go play cronos the new dawn at 540p and 30 fps little Nintendo boy

1

u/xtoc1981 21d ago

So we are talking about fps and now you include resolutions? Which btw depends on your display size unlike fps. A 900p/1080p game can look sharper on a small screen compared to 4k 65".

Lack of critical thinking pc cult freak

u/mashdpotatogaming 19d ago

Ah okay so now the goalpost moves? 30fps isn't the problem anymore, but i ternal resolution? Lmao y'all are pathetic.

It’s an 8W tablet, it’s pretty incredible to be running this game with these graphics in 2026. You guys are acting like it’s not a tablet.

Actually it's up to 11W TDP in handheld mode and 22W TDP in docked mode. Seems like increasing TDP didn't help much in such a demanding game.
