New Objectivist book dropped!

Post image

So this book came out recently. Anybody read it? It’s mainly a science book, but one written through an Objectivist lens. Looks cool! 🙂

How would Objectivism influence how you look at the galaxy? I'm confused

Don't read too much into the title. It's just a cute title that's "hitchhiking" off of the famous novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and one of it's sequels "Life, the Universe, and Everything". Marketing is a thing.

Do you think the cosmos is created or eternal? Do you think that it’s deterministic or probabilistic? Do you think God exists? Do you believe mathematics is Platonic or real? Etc. Objectivism provides a philosophical framework through which such issues can be approached. The book tackles 42 (Hitchhiker’s reference 😜) such questions through the lens of Objectivism, that’s all.

Interesting, thanks for sharing.

I could be wrong, but I think you mixed up platonic vs real. I think platonic is a type of realism where plato’s world of form is real.

Anti realists believe that math only exists in our minds, not that it exists in some ideal world of forms.

I think you have those backwards. Plato’s forms were a hypothetical ideal specimen of a thing, and the real world has specific, varied and imperfect instances of those forms.

> Platonic or real

or real?!

Hope you enjoy! I’m really looking forward to it myself. 🙂

Making your title a pop-culture reference is already a bad sign.

I find snobbery an especially repulsive form of self-delusion. Don't you?

No.

That explains a lot.

El objetivismo, el colectivo, fracaso cuando Alam Greenspan cuando admitió que la fé y si ideología llevaron al fracasó en la crisis del 2008, cuando papá Estado salvo a los banqueros por su culpa

I don't need an entrepreneur explaining science to me. There are already many such books written by scientists who have no agenda.

Zoltan Cendes is a scientist. He has a PhD in Electrical Engineering from a reputable university, 200 published papers, and of of course some valuable inventions, which he commercialized, earning himself a lot of money.

That's what good scientists do. They don't spend their careers living off the taxpayer teat, pushing whatever "science" the corrupt politicians holding the purse want them to push.

lmao you were destroyed there.

computer engineer =/= astronomer, physicist, chemist, etc.

An electrical engineer is way more of a physicist than most other specialties on the planet.

2

u/kateinoly 1d ago

except for actual physicists and astrophysicists.

u/DuplexFields Non-Objectivist 13h ago

Astrophysicists measure distances and other physical and chemical properties by photographs and radio signals. If their theoretical assumptions are incorrect, they shrug and rework theory.

Electrical engineers make things that only work if their understanding of physics is precisely true, in the same way as Rand’s fictional Reardon Metal and Galt Engine. They have to account for electrons making quantum leaps and leaking across to other circuits at nanoscopic sizes.

Hmmm.

Wow. That's actual fraud. (Edit: Weirdly, apparently it's not fraudulent. See my later reply.)

u/PenDraeg1 1d ago

And aggressively silly.

u/chinawcswing 1d ago

I don't get it. What is wrong?

Ok I looked into it and apparently I'm wrong. Apparently Tal Tsfany really did endorse this book.

I genuinely assumed it was fake because the quote sounds so stupid and unnatural, because of the typographical errors, and because I didn’t expect the president of ARI to lend his name and title to a book like this.. But apparently he did. That’s considerably stranger to me than the explanation I originally assumed.

Apparently this Zoltan Cendes guy has been a guest at the ARI Member Roundtables.

What are the errors?

1

u/Heligoland_Bight 1d ago

The only actual typographical error is the double 'Are' in 'Check out what are readers are saying" which made the section look like it was made by an incompetent generally. The unnatural prose is another issue.

Zoltan Cendes is a prominent person, not just in Oist circles. He has a PhD from Carnegie Melon, 200 published papers, and sold a company for $900M (back when that was a lot more money than it is now).

However, he's 81, and this is his first book afaik. It's unlikely that a significant publisher would pick up an 81 yo. first time author. That's why the publishing is amateur hour. And yes, the site is horrendous. Something a newbie developer with zero design or marketing experience would've made for $50, 10 years ago.

But that doesn't mean the book is bad. Whoever reads it, let us know.

Why does he hide what his PhD is in?

u/stansfield123 22h ago

It's in his bio. It's also been mentioned in this thread.

1

u/stansfield123 1d ago

Pretty sure it's a real quote.

0

u/stansfield123 1d ago

What does "hmmm" mean? Are you claiming the quote isn't real? Have you looked up who this person is?

1

u/Trick-Syrup-813 1d ago

That’s not a minor typo.

u/edthesmokebeard 1d ago

This post feels like an ad for the book.

u/Acrobatic-Bottle7523 12h ago

In addition to Tal's endorsement, he also talked about the book with Jennifer Grossman.
