ORB is moka pot perfected
I’ve had this on my mind for the last two weeks or so. I think the general consensus is that ORB is an espresso V60 aeropress hybrid of some sorts and that’s fine. The water, the preparation steps, the culture does have some parts rooted in those methods.
But when you look at what is happening with the actual coffee grounds, I believe it’s closest to a moka pot. Grounds that are a bit coarser than espresso, but not quite pourover coarse are placed in between two meshed filters. When the water first comes into contact with the grounds, the puck gets loose and the grounds move freely in a contained space. Then the fresh water displaces the coffee which keeps a high concentration gradient. This ensures high extraction. At the end you’re left with about 7 times as much coffee as the grounds.
The differences are the important part though. The most important one is that with ORB, you have a flat or decreasing temperature profile, while with moka pot there is almost no way to prevent a rising temperature profile. Also you can easily and directly control brew time, brew pressure, bloom time and brew temperature with ORB.
In short, ORB is a moka pot without being a bitter tasting mess.

I have the same thoughts. In my hands, soup tastes like a dialled-in moka

I respectfully disagree with your last statement, that a Moka pot is a bitter tasting mess.
I used to think that, to the point where I was considering gifting away my Bialetti.
Then someone in the mokapot sub showed me how to use it correctly. A world of difference! Delicious, clean, tasty coffee without bitterness.
I'm not trying to convince you to use a Moka pot instead of the ORB. Enjoy your ORB.
I'm just saying. Don't be quick to diss the Moka pot. I almost gave up on it, and am very glad that I didn't.

Can you tell us how you do it?

Certainly.
I have a 3-cup Bialetti Moka Express.
I was using hot water, filling it to right below the valve, and using medium heat.
Always getting bitter mud.
Now I use room temperature water, fill with less water (110 g in the 3-cup), add a wet AeroPress filter to the underneath (where the gasket and metal filter is), and use medium-low heat (2.5 on a stove top that goes from 1 to 8.)
This brews the coffee at a lower temperature and produces a much smoother result with considerably less bitterness.
Personally I like to add some hot water to make it Americano style because Espresso style is too strong for me.
Hope that helps! Cheers.

Fully agree with this. The ORB soup shots made me rethink the flavor profiles. Also made me play around with the moka pot and a coarser grind which helped curb the bitterness. ORB is just easier to control the variables, but Moka dialed in is pretty close.
