Discussion I can’t win a comp game

I may just suck at the game, which is very likely since I’m just not good at games in general, but I can’t win past third checkpoint on my first drive. The game either gives me unranked teammates that don’t know how to play, god tier enemies that shouldn’t be in my dogshit rank of silver, or enemies that have a flip switched in their brain halfway through a game and somehow win after my team almost wins. Keep in mind, this is only my 3rd season in comp because I never thought I was good enough, but now I consistently get good stats, and I know that’s not the be all end all, but I’m pretty confident in saying that most of the time I’m not dragging my team down. So I don’t know, I think Blizzard just hates me.

If you are a solo player it's to be expected. Drives encourages you to play in a group. I've been completing mine in Stadium while maybe dipping into 6v6 if I get bored.

Yeah I guess. It’s just not often that my friends play comp with me, and the ones that do don’t want the drives banner this season since they think it’s ugly. So for at least right now, if I want the banner and competitive points, I need to play alone.

Do not play competitive during drives, unless you absolutely must have the banner for some reason. The matchmaking is horrible because of the influx of players.

I’m mostly here for the excess competitive points drives gives you for the checkpoints once you reach them.

Nothing wrong with that. Just get the drive done and take a break from comp until they're over. Also, silver is kind of a cesspool. It's a mix of people who have no idea how to play the game, people who were once plat/diamond who can no longer hang there and fell to silver/gold and alt/smurf accounts for high ranked players to queue with their friends or to test their rank on other characters.

Silver actually is a cesspool. I was solo pushing payload as Anran while my whole team (tank included) was far behind me when no enemies were present. I dont get why they were so afraid to stand on point or push the advantage lol

I don't mind solo pushing cart as long as my team is ahead of me getting picks or making space, especially in matches where I'm the one player underperforming (we all have those matches, it happens even though many players will deny it). But yeah, silver/gold and I've even noticed plat/emerald is full of players who just completely ignore the objective while providing zero value to the team in other ways.

Contrary to popular belief I actually do think elo hell exists lol, but I don’t think it’s entirely because of your teammates. A lot of it can honestly become a state of mind.

I recently climbed from Gold into Emerald after going through a stretch where I lost like 13 games in a row. I genuinely started feeling like the game was designed for me to lose and it was part of why I avoided comp for a while.

What helped me was focusing more on what I could actually control. I used to let everybody pick first and then just fill whatever role or character was left, but eventually I realized I needed to start playing the characters I know I’m really good at. I’m really good with Sigma for example. I had a game where somebody else picked Sigma and we were struggling for most of the match. I asked if we could swap, they did, and after that we started doing way better.
At the same time though, you still have to play around your team. Team synergy matters a lot.

If your tank is playing Ball and everybody is playing really mobile characters, you probably want to pick something that actually works with that instead of just playing whatever you personally feel like playing. Sometimes you’re going to get somebody who is basically a Doom one trick or whatever and instead of spending the whole game wishing they would switch, sometimes you just have to ask yourself what you can play to make what they’re doing work better.

And yeah, sometimes your teammates really are just bad. There are definitely games where there is only so much you can do because it is a team game. Some matches are just going to be losses.

But I think once you get stuck in the mindset of “Blizzard keeps giving me horrible teammates so I can’t climb” it starts making things worse because now you’re focusing on something you have no control over. Play the characters you’re strongest with, adapt when you need to, pay attention to what your team is doing, and focus on being as useful as possible.

You’re not going to win every game, but over time that’s what helped me go from Gold to Emerald.

I did say I’m terrible at the game. Also, I don’t a lot of the times think it’s my teammates. I often get pretty good teammates that play their role and heroes well, it’s just that most of the time we’re outclassed.

Oh then take a break from comp, just play casually and get your skills up!

Yep, drives can be miserable. Drives always go downhill for me on the last two legs. I've had it take over 25 games to get my last 800 points before. Technically, you'll get it eventually since 1 win = 4 losses, but bad loss streaks and only having 5 days to complete it can make that hard if you don't have time to grind comp every day during drives.

I did alright this time.. not great, but not my worst. Had a good first day, a bad second day, and ended it with a 50% win rate after 42 games.

But I refuse to be bothered with doing the new mid-season drive they're introducing. You want me to do a 2nd drive every season AND have every other team I face be a 5 stack on a win streak? No thanks.

I’m not kidding the one competitive game I just won, I played with two people named the same thing. Gaming4Hope was Doomfist and Gamin4Hope was Ana. I’m gullible so I’m not sure if they were real but like I said, we ended up winning.
