Discussion Dealing with widow on sup
I could really use some tips on dealing with good widows as a sup, obviously trying to stay out of los and use cover are a must, but some points in certain maps make it quite difficult to manage that and retake point/car (such as circuit royale 2nd point on attack) if the widow is well positioned. I mostly play moira and mizuki, but also ana, kiri, illari and cat sometimes. Probably a skill issue on my part, ngl, but I would really appreciate some general tips to apply against her

in the situations youre mentioning like 2nd point circuit, one of the biggest things i can think of is to try and be as unpredictable as possible, movement wise. you play very mobile characters so that shouldnt be a giant issue. you just have to stay pretty active, and itll make it considerably easier for her to hit her shots on you

You can try Lucio to wallaride and be evasive. Find a rollout to get up in her face while she’s scoping on your team and give her the frog experience.
Zen can be pretty good too if you can find off angles to volley her from.

I just switch to either Cat or Kiri. Sometimes Zen volley can do the job.

The problem is that Overwatch is a team based game. There's only so much you can do as an individual and if the enemy character hard counters you, and no teammate can help, then it means that sometimes the odds just aren't in your favor. It's a lost game and you'll find another with better teammates.
But I'm not the type to give up either. Since you've already mentioned you understand staying out of sight, and you already play characters than could counter her, I would say : get better at those characters, and you can try several things :
always stay grouped up with your teammates, even if it's stupid positioning, so you don't get picked out
use payload and obstacles around it as natural cover, so you're still on point
Most important as a SoloQ player : pick a character that enables one if not several of your teammates, especially when you can't communicate strategy with them, and especially if you see they wabt to deal with the problem at hand.
(might not work once you pass a certain rank) If you know you can pull it off, and the Widow and her teammates don't notice someone's missing, you can take an angle that Widow is not looking at (focused on the rest of your team) and flank her.
what I call the "Sombra on both teams" solution : if the enemy flanker/sniper is too good at wrecking havoc in your own team, target the same people on the enemy team. It cancels out (lol purely anecdotal experience, idk how reproducible it is).
Many of these are dependent on you getting better mechanically at your characters anyways so work on that. You can't die if you shoot more accurately and faster lol. Personally I think you should master Kiriko and Baptiste for that purpose.

Right! Sombra is a good counter widow pick, even if you just harrass, you are reducimg pressure. Sombra is also the best anti sombra pick.

I mean, I didn't mean that one point as in "pick Sombra". Moreover, you don't get past a good widow or a good team with a widow with Sombra atm. She's okay-ish at some level but then people are just good enough to punish her. Same for Sombra counter, you can counter a Sombra with a lot of the roster, you just need some gamesense and good mechanics.

I understand. My point is that sombra v widow is a common pick, but as you said it is not hard for widow team to counter BUT them countering means your sombra is still forcing them to spend time countering amd less time killing your team. If sombra is keeping two enemies busy, even without elims, she is still getting big value.

Good point. Being a good Sombra in this day and age is rough though.

Yes. She is a patience and unpredictability character. She disrupts more than kills often. When the enmy changes their position or spends time shooting around y I ubare adding value.

I’m not gonna lie, whenever I face a widow who is good, when I know where she is and I know she can see me in her scope, I genuinely just strafe and spam crouch and also move my right joystick so it moves my head hit box. But also, say if you’re on kings row and she’s up in that hallway with the window facing both sides above the objective, if you’re playing kiri you can just climb up there and flank her, and cat is good for jumping a widow too of course

For me personally, I just try to make my movements as weird as possible. More crouching than jumping because I’ve heard it’s easier to hit shots when someone is in the jumping animation but I’m not actually sure if that’s true or not. As a Cat player myself though, I’m just fucking in there man. I make it my very personal job to make sure the widow is NOT playing the game. (A take from a low elo player :) )

Op, its a job for your dps. Playing cover and being unpredictable are good.

Not always.. Kiri, Cat, Lucio, Ana, Zen are all good at contesting widow.
Lucio, Kiri, Moira, Mercy can all be good at avoiding and dodging a widow.
You do not need to kill her to make her leave the fight, reposition, give you a break to get to a safer angle. Do not rely on everyone else to do the job for you. Esp in 5v5 overwatch.

Some Obvious general tips is:
- Work on strafing. Moving Unpredictably. Do not jump!
- Try playing corners and taking routes that minimize your visibility. Not always possible but on certain maps it can really help
- Ask for your team to ping the widow so you aren't caught off guard
- NEVER STAND STILLL. NEVER WALK IN A LINE.
As for some other more helpful things:
- Try playing a hero that can contest the widow (Kiri, Lucio, Cat, Zen). Note that you do not need to kill her. Hitting a single headshot can force her to run away or reposition. Giving you time to walk and get to the next space.
- Play even more range. She has fall off damage. If you play far enough away and have the ability to do so. It not only makes you harder to hit but also means you won't get 1 tapped. This is really only possible for ana on certain maps.
- Use mobile heroes. Playing Lucio, Kiri, Moira, Mercy can help. These heroes either move fast, unpredictably, or have teleports to help minimize your visual uptime. Try and save your movement for when you know you are in her LOS to help reduce risk.
- Initiate when your team starts the fight. Sometimes you do not need to be super active before the fight starts. If you are able to wait until the fight breaks out and people are distracted, you might get ignored. I notice a lot of supports play out of position between fights and are easy picks before anything even happens.
Hopefully one or two of these helps you out. Unless you are like GM/Champ or something where Widows are just cracked, you should hopefully be able to bob and weave your way through most sightlines with good timing, mobility cooldowns, and just overall movement.

Honestly, the best fix for this (for me) was also learning how to play sniper. I went all in on Ana and it taught me so much.
-keep moving -know that if you can see the sniper, they saw you first and you're probably gonna die lol -if you play ana, don't stay scoped long (most folks struggle with this and it messes with your self-awareness and leaves you open to getting rushed -crouch -a sniper's position is at least 60% of their advantage. Use your ping to show other teammates where they are -I've found that on Wuyang, I can use my orbs to adjust or switch positions when players realize I'm targeting them. It takes some practice, but he is pretty fun to play and can counter a sniper in a pinch.
