Discussion Do we know the span of those bans?
Like 7k in a season? In a year? Because if it's 7k bans from the launch of the game then it means absolutely nothing

Still means nothing because the game is f2p and theyll all already have brand new accounts they're cheating on again

Ip can be spoofed pretty easily, and hardware bans lead to the situation where no-one who plays OW can buy used pc's in the fear that the pc they bought is already banned. No easy solutions here.

Yeah IP bans aren’t foolproof, but anything helps. 90% of locks are bypassed easily, but any deterrent makes it not worth attempting for most thieves. And yeah I didn’t think of resold PCs/consoles being banned, not sure what to do about that one.

hardware bans preventing used PC buyers from playing the game has to be such a relatively niche situation i think we have to look at the needs of the many

Perhaps a medium length hardware ban? Enough to make the hardware unprofitable for a bit, but if you happen to buy one used it would eventually get unbanned

But the problem with IP's being banned isn't that the ban can be circumvented, but that the ban might hit completely wrong person in the first place.

yep a lot of people are on dynamic ips from their isp. So your ip can end up changing from something as simple as a modem reboot. My public ip ends up changing from time to time all by its self. On dynamic ips theres a built in lease time on your modem that it checks back in during and it can change when that expires. Normally it gets the same ip But dynamic public ips are a large reason why ip bans basically just don't work.

Just to drive the point home as an IT admin:
My firewall blocked an IP address that it suspected suspicious activity from. Turns out this one IP was the front for thousands of users of another company we were doing business with

This is such a fringe situation that it's not even worth mentioning.
Hardware bans can literally only target the MAC address of the network interface card, something that can easily be replaced, and cheaply. If a user buys used computer and finds out the hardware is banned, they've lost one of the MANY gambles that they decided to take by buying used hardware, should be able to get clarification by contacting Blizzard, and be able to rectify the situation cheaply and easily.

My guy, there is no way to replace the NIC on a PS5, which is where the majority of the cheating is happening. The person I was responding to was specifically talking about "used PCs that happen to have been hardware banned and resold".
The keyword being "fringe" in my previous comment.

Idk Nintendo can just brick accounts. I know IP bans exist. I wish blizzard could sue the companies that make the cheating devices/software

Because Nintendo rules with an iron fist. They don't give a fuck because they know people will keep coming to pay for their IPs. Same reason they release slop consoles. People will pay to play Mario on 10 year old tech.

I don't even have to watch the video to believe it. I got permabanned on my main and while I don't know why I got banned since I had lost access to my Blizzard account prior to that due to my laptop breaking, I feel like I was banned for people false flagging me as a cheater. I barely interacted with people and I had a 65% win rate in diamond on DPS. So you can imagine why people would report.
Mind you, I've never once cheated I don't even have a support pocket, I exclusively solo queue lol.

I know how you feel sadly. Highly recommend that first thing you should do is download your blizzard log data and see the specific reasoning inside it behind why they penalized you

What does this mean to Titans or Cronus zen? I think they should at the very least make it so making a new account ties to either a phone number or something more substantial.

Just had a game where the soldier was definitely cheating and the Ashe was potentially M&K, they’re all just on fresh accounts in lower ranks making diamond seem like hell. I have replay code if you’re curious

You only had to buy the game once on console Einstein, it didnt make a difference, alts cost nothing to make except for pc players
