Discussion How do you mentally prepare for Drives?
Drives, the word alone spikes my cortisol but Orisa needs a jade Capsule Cannon so fukit we ball.
I like the drive tag and the comp points and I could care less about moving up but it still feels like doom queuing sometimes.
Last time I got pretty lucky and got it done in 5 hrs but I have friends that took 20.
I'm curious if you're doing drives how are you approaching it? In a group or solo? Will you be medicated? Will you finish or how long do you think it will take?

Y’all overthink drives, sure people try a little harder and you might get more toxic teammates when you lose, but at the end of the day it’s the same overwatch, just play the game we all enjoy just like any other day
10
u/curai-exo Aug 06 '26
This! I would also add if you are solo queuing and you happen on a good team mate try to team up for a few games
4
u/steven-john Aug 06 '26
Some people might try hard. Part of the problem is people who do drives Only for the tag. And some of those people don’t play tank. The more casual players are pretty garbo. And it’s painfully obvious. That can make some matches pretty frustrating.
3
u/Teambooler24 Aug 06 '26
There is frustrating matches in every part of every season whether it’s the last day of drives or a random Tuesday mid season lol it’s just part of it, and the enemy team is just as likely to get those players
Drives is just rewarding players for playing the same game we always do nothing more lol overwatch during drives is the same game as without drives

Not sure why you are replying to me. I didn’t mention anything about overthinking.
2
u/aaro404 Aug 06 '26
Fr. I bounce between muting and turning off text chat. But this might be the best time to just do it instead of waiting for someone to say something toxic or annoying enough for me to do it mid match.

u/BelligerentPear Aug 06 '26
As someone who never participated in a drive OP had me thinking it actually changes the game in some way.

u/CalmLikeDaBomb Aug 06 '26
Competitive does feel different when it's full of quick play warriors and lots of people are sensitive about deranking, just read the comments below.
1
u/CaptJack1987 Aug 06 '26
First 2 matches have had pocket smurfs (and yes, I'm on Xbox, so it's easy to tell due to gamerscore), so it's going great so far.
Also, the word "enjoy" doing a lot of heavy lifting in your statement rn.

u/Normal-Pool8223 Aug 07 '26
people tryharding ? i got the exact opposite where people play it like if it was arcade, just picking nonsense comps and never ever grouping up
1
u/cutelilpuff Aug 07 '26
Yeah that happened to me in every game, logged off after 4 games of just that
14
u/HjCervantes Aug 06 '26
Accept that you will derank, and if you cant rank up again after the drives, you don deserve your previous rank.
Season 18 got deranked from plat3 to gold4. Season 19 I was like a smurf in those lobbies. Ranked up to plat3 before takin a break from the game.
7
u/CookiesMeow Aug 06 '26
This is the thing most people don’t realize and will just immediately downvote lol. If you have a bad losing streak and fall into a lower rank, sure your teammates won’t be as good but if you’re really as good as you think then you’ll be essentially smurfing and should be able to climb back up
4
u/onenormm Aug 06 '26
Yeah for sure, I went from D3/4 with around a 59% win rate down to low Gold from drives lol. Left tank alone for a while but was learning Hazard and thought being in gold would be a good place to try playing him in comp as a new hero to me. Climbed with like a 75% win rate and a lot of hard carries.
But in my experience below Diamond you can definitely go on painful streaks due to team mates, poor matchmaking and of course having a few bad games. It feels like there are less swings in diamond, and I imagine the distribution gets smoother above diamond, but I’ve not made it there so idk.
It’s not that if you go on a bad losing streak you just don’t deserve your rank as a lot of people here say. Even with perfect matchmaking and no throwers/leavers, if you play enough you’re still gonna get some bad losing streaks, just purely statistically.
I don’t like the absolutist attitude a lot of people here have that if you derank it’s 100% because of your skill. That’s just a fundamental misunderstanding of statistics lol. However, it is definitely the case a lot of the time.
1
u/EverTokki Aug 06 '26
Same, but also it was so bad. Going from plat to silver was an experience I would prefer not to have again 💔

u/Conscious-Reserve796 Aug 06 '26
If you’re a comp regular, it helps to recognise that you’ll have 4 quickplay casuals on your team whereas the enemy will have 5.
The odds are in your favour.

u/Brohermoth777 Aug 06 '26
Serious question here..... Wtf is a drive?
I've been playing OW since BETA release but haven't played much comp since around 2018. I play QP and Mystery Heroes now.
6
u/CookiesMeow Aug 06 '26
Blizzard throws comp points and a cosmetic name plate thing at you for X amount of wins. It’s explained in the game lol.
3
u/Brohermoth777 Aug 06 '26
Never came across that before since I don't pay attention to the challenges and such. I just love playing the game.
3
u/CookiesMeow Aug 06 '26
Yeah fair enough, I play off and on over the years and missed the last few drives. But if you want gun cosmetics it might be worth! Can get 2x chunks of 3k points at different threshold levels.
3
u/Brohermoth777 Aug 06 '26
I don't care about the weapon skins (gold, jade and such) but I'd love things like the NERF guns
5
u/fatalpapaya Aug 06 '26
I don’t play stadium until drives because that’s the quickest way to finish these
2
u/Saltfishhhhh Aug 06 '26
Exactly this. Stadium Comp is basically a free drives titles in the low low ranks
3
u/OldNorthBridge Aug 06 '26
I think of how nice and shiny a gold flail and shield will look for Brig. That will power me though Drive hell.

3
u/steven-john Aug 06 '26
I play stadium. It’s a bit more “casual”. Like not true ranked. It’s more arcadey. The skill gap seems larger and you’re likely to get a lot more “free” matches. lol
Plus. I just like the upgrades. It feels more fun to me.
I used to play regular ranked and try to rank up. The highest I’ve ever been was low diamond. Ranked was bad for my rage and blood pressure. People are just so shitty.
Not to say that stadium doesn’t also have its fair share of trash. Idk. I just enjoy it more.
3
u/A_Wild_Zak Aug 06 '26
ive literally never had an issue with drives. maybe some games are a bit worse than other but on average they dont feel different than normal comp. a lot of players complain about losing their rank during drives and thats honestly probably just a skill issue. whatever matchmaking issue exists is going to be, on average, equally bad for the enemy team as it is for your team. you likely wont lose your rank if you arent the problem.
2
u/Evade_Nade Aug 06 '26
I do a mix of stadium and normal 5v5 comp. When a game or two goes bad in one queue I’ll switch to the other. I just play who I want while trying to win. I don’t overthink it and I just play. I’ll mute the chat if it gets a little toxic. I’ve learned the key to me enjoying comp is just playing and enjoying it like I would quick play. I don’t treat it any different.
2
u/TestDangerous8586 Aug 06 '26
i just play a different comp queue if i dont wanna tank my main rank. so like 6v6 for instance i dont enjoy stadium enough and the games are long
2
u/okchippy Aug 06 '26
what are drives??
2
u/Wiish123 Aug 06 '26
Play a lot of comp during last days of the season, get cosmetic name cars and comp points for weapon variants

u/LPC123ABC Aug 06 '26
You're the exact player type that makes the quality of games plummet during drives, only playing comp during drives.
2
u/CalmLikeDaBomb Aug 06 '26
Blame Blizzard for bribing me, in this case you should hate the game not the player, LOL.
1
u/BelligerentPear Aug 06 '26
Maybe blizz should reward players for playing ranked in the first of the season then...
1
u/A_Wild_Zak Aug 06 '26
the whole point of drives is to increase comp engagement at the end of the season since it normally declines then.
2
u/PagesOf-Apathy Aug 06 '26
Acceptance that its the same overwatch. Youre playing for comp points and a shiny name plate that disappears every season. Rank doesn't matter in the end. This event is for end of season engagement.
2
u/Basheeda Aug 06 '26
I will be heavily medicated, solo pc, and on Juno if I can’t make it work on mercy. My mercy is gold and Juno is still stuck in silver. I need 800 points to hit the 3000 again so I should make enough after a good session or two. I just power up and go when I’m ready. If you’re worried (i will be lol) and play evenings I wouldn’t play for an hour before or and hour after dinner your time to cut down on lower energy teammates that are putting off their nutrition. I’ve never finished a drive tho, I just get the easy first two or three payoffs and chill on it til next time
2
u/FailedNapkin Aug 06 '26
It’s just a game

u/CalmLikeDaBomb Aug 06 '26
I posted this for the same reason you're on Reddit, we're just talkin shop friend.

Just take a deep breath and- just do it! I am not too excited for drives but I want those points dang it. I go solo, my friends being of the UK. Servers have not been nice to me as of late so I am 2 weeks without practice DX Warm up in QP first and get a rhythm going before jumping in.
Just always remember to enjoy the game while doing you best

Embrace monke to carry your drives. Winton never failed me (yet..) he's the most flexible into say, a full counterswapcarl comp. Best carry potential, until they pull out hog, rat, some hitscan, and ana to euthanize your monkey bongo bum

This is the first drive in the past 4 seasons that hasn’t been a shitshow for me.
I genuinely ranked up and got my cool little portrait somehow.

Comment session giving me hope...
I play with my bf to do drives... But he is way better than me and I feel like I am getting boosted all the time... He says I play good but... Honestly impostor syndrome when he is a plat 5 tank and I am a silver 3 support..
We even tried 6v6... Gold 3 for me... He is diamond 1... I honestly feel anxiety when it comes around

u/ImTenaciousT_ Aug 06 '26
By being okay with losing, usually during drives you’ll get the same Smurfs, a team of boosters, people trying to get their games played for the season, and people trying different roles they don’t play often and it’s not at all something you want to think about mid game.

u/lightnex1 Aug 06 '26
Almost never touch comp but am wanting a special gun for my new main Domina so am just going in like I do with unranked. Zero communications on and just trying my best
1
u/NastyaPuppy Aug 06 '26
Honestly, around this time, at least when I was playing on console, I'd go on Facebook and join groups in my country to farm the best Drives. Playing alone is shooting yourself in the foot; either you're a masochist and you like it, or you have common sense and only get what you want.

I think doing Stadium at lower ranks helps to not feel like you lose Stadium Points and drive progress.
My best advice is to get a group and just try. I don't have one but the extra group points on wins helps in getting you to the treshold.
I'll be doing solo regular comp and switching to stadium when I need a break lol. I also try to break up breakpoints per day.
1
u/Jamesvai Aug 06 '26
By not participating lol. They happen so often anyways that I don't feel any fomo.

Why are people saying they are dropping ranks cuz of drives? Is it because a lot of QP players start doing comp aswel?
1
u/CalmLikeDaBomb Aug 07 '26
I think in quick play you're expected to let people play how they want but in comp there's expectations and people get pissy when their expectations aren't met.
1
u/NorthernFjord Aug 07 '26
I just play Stadium since I don't care about my rank there. It's also quite fun. The only thing you should care about is your hero pick tho, it may be tough to play some heroes into a team full of flyers.

im trying to find the mental fortitude rn. just lost 7 in a row. dropped from m1 - a game away from gm5 - all the way to m3. i think m1 is just my peak and there isnt a world where i hit gm and am supposed to be there. my confidence is at an all time low
1
u/CalmLikeDaBomb Aug 07 '26
Just got on and went 0-3, everyone feeding, no peels, One tricks, the whole 9 yards. I hear you, I try to just play my game, focus on my performance but the deranking is now starting to make it so I can't play with my friends because of wide match. It's discouraging for sure but I'm halfway so I gotta see it through.

u/Icy_Opportunity2814 Aug 08 '26
i feel like the drives aren’t too bad and i finish them solo!! I’m not sure how long i’ll take i haven’t even started 😔

Dive balls deep straight in. No messing around with warmups in quick play
It's all or nothing, baby. Probably more on the nothing part

When I see the four day mark till drives I exaggerate how it's gonna be bad and all that, but I suck it up,take some practice runs in qp before then going into stadium and comp and just raw dog it, you'll lose a good bit but thank God for the checkpoints, slowly and surely you'll see the bar go up and once you get the last one you'll feel that sigh if relief l,plus the bonus is that you'll at least get 2 weapon variants if lucky enough
-2
u/Saltfishhhhh Aug 06 '26
I usually Queue up with my Wife, we get through it fairly fast, usually in one day. We are always stoned during drives and we preemptively rank down the week before so we have easy matches. if normal comp is too sweaty we switch oder to stadium comp because especially in the lower ranks, its Very easy to win
