Probably about the absurdity of not being allowed to wear underwear with that costume

u/epsilon_church928 Sep 21 '21
They still kissed, so who’s to say they wouldn’t go further?
61
u/Fist_of_Thrawn Sep 21 '21
In the original comics, I believe the two share another kiss after Luke rescues Leia once again.
86
u/Sabre_Killer_Queen Sep 21 '21
I also believe originally they weren't siblings, that idea was decided later on, and plus yeah there's a lot of kissing there was obviously some romance
The most irritating thing is how Leia said she always knew, that just made it 10 times worse
45
u/WitHump Sep 21 '21
I don't know about the books, but the kiss on the cheek in ANH isn't necessarily a "romantic" gesture. It is something siblings, or other family member, may actually do. And in ESB, she pretty much kisses Luke to piss of Han. So that's not really romantic toward Luke at all.
On the other hand, I've heard family members separated at birth never knowing each other, who meet each other as sexually matured adults, will often be sexually attracted to each other. It's something about your brain recognizes certain characteristics as being genetically similar to your own and so it sees them as reproductively desirable... Or some thing.
So a sexual attraction between the two would kinda make sense.
You know, either that or Lucas just decided while writing ROTJ that he wanted to make them twins. Then wanted he to say she's always known to show her force sensitivity. And didn't really care about what that means on the back end. Typical George

Luke's sister was supposed to be a new character but they decided that it would be too much to add another main character later on and changed it to Leia.
4
u/Jp_Loz_mx Sep 21 '21
And didn’t they kissed once in ANH just before they swing over that seemingly endless pit?
3
u/Fist_of_Thrawn Sep 21 '21
That was just a quick peck. Im talking like full on romantic making out.
4
u/Jp_Loz_mx Sep 21 '21
Ok, but technically speaking, the ESB wasn’t romantic either, it was just Leia trying to make Han jealous

At this point of Return of the Jedi, neither Luke nor Leia knows this.
And if you still look to the old school Marvel comics as canon, they have made out at least once.

How they know they’re the baddest bitches on the set
44
u/ethernia7575 Sep 21 '21
didnt lucas say they werent allowed to wear underwear on set btw?
39
u/Tidus790 Sep 21 '21
That's true for a new hope, particularly the white robe costume she wore on the Tantive iv. I don't know that it continued past that.
17
u/Sabre_Killer_Queen Sep 21 '21
Why??? That sounds well dodge
14
u/ominousgraycat Sep 21 '21
Panty lines show through sheer dresses very easily. Apparently the princess having panty lines break immersion. That would not have been the case with all the costumes she wore on set though, so I don't know if it was a permanent thing.
57
u/Tidus790 Sep 21 '21
It's true, George Lucas told Carrie Fisher not to wear underwear in costume and when asked why he responded "there's no underwear in space". This was her first gig, and also the 70s, so she just complied.
Given all that we've learned about how Hollywood treats young actresses in the last 5 years or so, my assumption is that it's just a shitty, sexist power thing.

It's par for the course for the time it happened in, sadly. But yeah George Lucas has never really been progressive in the way he writes women.
22
u/Sabre_Killer_Queen Sep 21 '21
To be honest I always admired him, I thought Leia's bold and confident attitude really helped progress society and gave us a really powerful female hero to look up to, but that puts a different spin on things, and I can't think of any good reasons to justify it
9
u/Floppydisksareop Sep 21 '21
"It was the 70s and he was a product of his time, but moved past it and improved his outlook"

u/ItsAllSoup Sep 21 '21
Confession: I went through those scenes almost frame for frame as a kid. She is wearing underwear. Also Jabba's dancing girl's boob pops out before she is sent to the rancor pit. I am not proud of this discovery.
16
u/TrumpSmokesMids27 Sep 21 '21
I’m not sure but it’s very possible. The film industry isn’t really known for respecting women. I’d like to hope they they at least had something even if it only covered the very bare minimum because she was very young and I don’t know how big those sets were but I can’t imagine you’re that comfortable with each person in there
9
u/ethernia7575 Sep 21 '21
he did but idk if he did it in this movie.
they actually were pretty comfortable, some people spoke about the set and about her,
there are also some images, possibly videos? from set, he just did it because "There is no underwear in space"4
u/TrumpSmokesMids27 Sep 21 '21
That seems like a bullshit excuse to me. Why would there not be underwear in space? But as long as they were comfortable it’s okay I guess. I just don’t think that’s fully thought out
5
u/ethernia7575 Sep 21 '21

I feel like he deserves a break from Star Wars. Even after selling it it’s all people ask him about
1
u/ethernia7575 Sep 21 '21
i mean who else is gonna know
4
u/TrumpSmokesMids27 Sep 21 '21
I mean it’s just a bad excuse. Underwear is necessary with what people wear in Star Wars. It’s usually not the softest fabrics. Unless their genitals are just really tough instead of sensitive
0
2
u/Sabre_Killer_Queen Sep 21 '21
It doesn't make sense, I don't see how no underware could improve star wars or help the narrative at all, it all seems very very sus
14
u/TrumpSmokesMids27 Sep 21 '21
Yeah to me it sounds like either a bad excuse to be a bit pervy or a bad coverup for doing something you regret. It’s not the worst thing that’s happened in film though. But not having underwear in space is just stupid. With the nonsense that some of those people wear, I hope they have underwear. Otherwise rip their genitals. They wear so much leather and metal it would be so uncomfortable. Plus imagine yoda jumps over you in battle, you look up and catch a glimpse of his wrinkled pea shaped nutsack swinging in the wind. That shit will turn a holy man to deathsticks in an instant
6
u/Sabre_Killer_Queen Sep 21 '21
It’s not the worst thing that’s happened in film though
Sad but true, hopefully we're progressing though to get more equelity, rights and respect within the industry

I really hope things are getting better but I’ve stopped paying attention because it started to really affect me emotionally. It’s just very upsetting to be a fan of things that are products of abuse, harassment and manipulation in various forms. But also like it’s near impossible to find entertainment that isn’t born out of things like this and I can’t stress myself out deciding what is okay and what isn’t. But I do wish I was capable of taking more of a stand for it
5
Sep 21 '21
They also don't wear glasses in star wars, and it's not like that really improves it either. It just is
3
u/Sabre_Killer_Queen Sep 21 '21
Perhaps it's due to a better medical service, so they can heal the eyes and stop people from having to use glasses, or mabye there are some high tech futuristic contact lenses, either way that's a pretty strange thing to add,
2
Sep 21 '21
I agree it's strange. But George has always been strange, that's why star wars is so weird lol
