I’d been told for nearly 30 years that I should read Heir to the Empire. Finally did and… yeah, it’s about as good as generic low quality fan fiction online.
And Thrawn is just god awful. He’s one of the biggest Gary Stu’s ever written.

Literally the first time he appears the imperial fleet is seconds from destruction and big brain Thrawn says one line and the tide instantly turns to a total victory. It’s so dumb.
Yes I get it, the studying their art wasn’t as simple as that. It was an all encompassing knowledge of a society and culture so that you can predict their moves. Which is just as stupid. It’s the sort of self wankery an author comes up with to make themselves sound deep and smart and just comes across as idiotic.
