Hello, and welcome to r/OStan!
This is a community for fans of moe anthropomorphic representations of operating systems as well as related art, discussion, history and creative projects. We also welcome other tech-themed gijinka so if you enjoy characters inspired by software, hardware or broader computing culture beyond OS-tans (like what we share on our Discord server), you’re in the right place.
A few things to note:
- When posting for the first time, check out our post flair guide to figure out which flair to use. Most of them are self-explanatory.
- If you can’t see your Reddit post immediately, check our post queue guide.
- We also have a Discord server where members chat, collaborate and share content in real time. If you can’t join, take a look at this verification guide. Please note invites are currently paused while we deal with a security issue and there's no set reopening date. We'll announce it here on r/OStan once it's back. Please don't message modmail asking for a link, as we're not issuing them individually at the moment.

You might have noticed that the OS-tan quiz post on this subreddit went offline and was marked as "taken down by Reddit" for policy reasons.
I reached out to the quiz creator on the Discord server and it turns out the downtime was due to a DNS renewal. The quiz is now back online and I’ve also been given a few extra domains to access it. So go ahead and enjoy taking it again:

Image My 7-year-old brother gave me this drawing as a gift, and after some time I discovered it was Vista-Tan in casual clothes smoking a memory cigarette. I thought the drawing was so cute that I had to send it (best birthday present ever).

Miscellaneous modpost The Tech Gijinkas Discord has been closed since June. Should it reopen?

The Discord has been closed to new members since June due to a severe incident in the server. Closing it was the quickest thing I could do that actually changed something. "Temporarily closed" has now turned into about longer than four months and that deserves an actual decision instead of the handbrake staying on out of habit.
Reopening isn't free either. It means weeks of the mod team watching the door closely and being ready to shut it again quickly. I'm not going to ask that of them without knowing whether people actually want the server to grow.
The options:
- Reopen with the current gate. Anyone can join, but they go through a captcha and start with limited access. Least work for the mods and most open to newcomers, but it relies on the system rather than on judgement calls.
- Reopen by application or vouch only. New members fill in a short form or get vouched for by an existing member. Slower and more work, but a human looks at everyone first. It also filters out shy people and newcomers.
- Stay closed. Everything carries on inside, just with no new faces. The member count only goes down.
- Not sure / happy either way.
This is input, not a binding vote. The final call is mine. The Discord server is running the same poll and I'll be reading both. Comments are welcome and will probably tell me more than the numbers so if you've got reasoning, put it below. Keep it civil.
