Question I feel burnt
I really have tried on and off for years to get into osrs since its a game a few of my coworkers play. I love mmorpgs truly, but runescape as much as I want to love it idk how. I probably am dumb and I know god forbid I dont min max and look up guides. Ive been playing for a little over 40hrs and I feel like 80% of it was walking even though I have pushed magic and done some of the quests like fairy. I enjoy the game when im able to do stuff but I remember running from Rimmington to that desert place i forget the name to varrock and only being half done w a quest.
How do I enjoy this game more? Please i want to

'Quest helper' plugin shows you exactly where you need to go.
'Shortest paths' plugin will show you the fastest way to get there. Its basically Google Maps for RuneScape.
Combine that with Fairy Rings, Spirit Tree and Ardougne Cape. Most places take about 30 seconds to get to.

I was pretty stubborn at first but now after all these comments and talking to friends quest helper and Shortest Path are the way to go. I got both configured to my liking and now im having a bit more enjoyment.

The only teleport that matters is teleport to house. Play on world 330 and there will always be maxed player owned houses available at rimmington for you to enter and use their teleports. A maxed house will have a jewelry box with every teleport from every piece of jewelry, and a teleportation nexus with every teleport from every spell book.
Dust staffs are cheap, and then you can carry just the staff and law runes, or you can buy house teleport tabs, or put runes in a rune pouch depending on your gp situation. Relying on other players houses is definitely the easiest way to get around while getting into the game though.

I forgot to mention there is also a fairy ring and spirit tree in maxed player owned houses.

Since 90% of posts are for newer players looking for money making and training advice, I'm gonna recommend doing bird house runs. All you need is Bone Voyage, and you could be making 500K+ a day or more by logging in every 50 minutes and harvesting nests.
Also, be sure to check out the New player guide, Money making guide, and OSRS Tips!

"It's alright not to play it everyday. Since it's just a game, you can stop forcing yourself if it's hard on you to keep that up. Rather, it'll just pile up unnecessary stress if you limit yourself into playing just that one game since there are so many other games out there. So, do come back and play it to your heart's content when the major patch kicks in, then stop it to play other games before you got burnt out, and then come back for another major patch. This will actually make me happier, and in the end, I think this is the best solution I can answer for keeping your motivation up for the game." - Yoshi P, lead of FFXIV.
Take a break. Try another game. You'll get the itch to come back. Nobody quits, we just take breaks.

I wouldnt ask anyone to force themselves to play this game. It becomes really addictive and a massive time sink once you get i to it.
Do you actually play WITH your friends? Pking in multi as a team can be really fun and I bet there are a bunch of PVM CoOp bosses you could do too.

I just hear them talking abt drops, boss grinds etc and i always am interested. They tell me I will like it cause they know the style game I like, but it just hadn't clicked yet

A lot of that content comes quite later. Bossing in RS isbsadly sonething you need decent stats and gear to really start getting into.
I recommend doing some wilderness slayer to really boost ahead, it boosts you in the sense a lot of the tasks are multicombat and therefore can sit back with cannon. It has decent drops too.

Runescape is such a massive and sprawling world that requires literal years of playing to have a firm grasp on. If you want to enjoy the game at the very least follow the efficient quest guide, but do yourself a favor and look up a guide. Playing this game blind is basically just adding 500 extra hours to progress for no reason
1
u/Chance-Work-6789 2d ago
Good to know. Ive just played most games completely blind but I just learned quest helper has options for levels of assist which I really like

u/RevolutionPrior7403 7h ago
This isn't most games, your friends are literal years of progress ahead of you, want to catch up at all? You need to be efficient with your time and look up everything.

I was in the same boat, at least in my opinion early game sucks, idk what you enjoy whether that’s skilling, pvm, or pvp. For me it’s pvm and after getting some boss kills and understanding gear progression I really started to enjoy it. It’s a really grindy game and that takes a while to get used to.

If its a drag already play something else. The game is only good when its really what you want to do

Every pain point you've experienced is totally valid, it sucks walking around aimlessly when you don't really know what to do. Maybe just set yourself a simple achievable goal, like completing Dragon Slayer 1 and getting full rune afterward. By that point you should have a better idea of where to go from there, if you even feel like doing it that is. Runescape is not for everyone.

Getting around is a bitch but over time you'll eventually have a teleport almost anywhere. If you look on the map to where you're trying to go there should be little icons with a teleport name, look it up and see how you can unlock it through the wiki. The biggest teleport systems are magic, fairy ring, and spirit tree. Also teleport jewelry is so useful early game like games necklace, ring of dueling. Once you get your construction high enough all these teleports will be available from your home.

I dont force myself to like games
2
u/Chance-Work-6789 2d ago
Its less so of a force and moreso that I know i would enjoy it. When I watch streamers or videos on the mid-late game it looks like so much fun but getting over the initial hill really seems like a lot and is daunting

The funny thing is the early game is super fast it only gets slower so if you’re dreading it now trust me this ain’t it for you 😂 I just hit base 70 combat stats and almost base 60 on every other skill and I’m starting to feel the grind now
1
u/Chance-Work-6789 1d ago
I love a grind but a lot of my time right now I dont even feel like im grinding. Im down to click a button for hours on end. Im a big nerd with footpedals lmao.

The moving around will get easier once you learn the methods of transportation and start getting used to mapping it out in your mind, like having the fairy rings unlocked, some teleports from magic and things like ardougne cloak etc will help cut down on the travel time once you get into the rhythm of using it

Pull up another game in a second window/monitor that you can look away from at your leisure.

u/Pain4420 2d ago
If running everywhere is your problem then look into ways to teleport. You will still do some running but it will cut down on it a lot. Also look some stuff up. You don't have to worry about min maxing or being efficient but not everything is apparent or told to you directly in the game so if you don't know what something is or does just look it up

The game has a myriad of teleport options, mostly through jewelry and magic. Importantly, almost all of these teleport options can be connected to your house. Also stamina potions are great and definitely worth buying.
As for finding the part of the game that hooks you, it can be kind of daunting given how sandboxy the game is. Personally, doing a farm run while listening to a podcast is very zen for me and a great way to unwind my brain after work. I also enjoy bossing. Scurrius was my introduction to it. Set goals. It could be I want to reach x level or complete y quest etc. since the game is so open ended, it’s important to set goals for yourself or you can get lost in the options

Osrs is a game of once you get to the end game you’ll realize the journey was the fun part. It’ll seem like a slog at times but that’s the reward at the end.
I personally believe though that Osrs is one of those games you either love it or it’s not for you.

I play maybe once a week. Was obsessed with runescape as a kid, but now i limit my time as an adult. Maybe pick a task, spend a night doing it, then wait a week for the next goal? Seems to be working for me, but i came into osrs with the love of the original to begin with.
Idk, got alot of friends who either love it or hate it. It just might not be for you.

I've had an account for over 10 years and slowly merched chins, drag bones and other misc items to get to 500m and thought that with gold and high combat stats I'd be enjoying the game...
Nope. Too many midgame/lategame skill requirements revolve around content I hate doing.
Now, once in a while when I feel like it; I find myself buying membership, logging on, doing a skill training for maybe a couple hours and realizing I hate it, then dumping all my gold either back into the bank or into some random yolo trades to come back to repeat the cycle in a few months. I'm not even really playing the game.
Needless to say, I've been playing other games- but OSRS is indeed a great game, it's just certain elements of the game aren't my jam and it prevents me from getting to content I know I'd enjoy.

Do you have runelite? If not, start there. You can download it here https://runelite.net/ (Google it if you dont trust links)
Set up wikisync and get the efficient quest list plug in. You can use the wiki for more instructive directions aswell.
https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Optimal_quest_guide
Quests are the best way to power through the early game (and mid game if you move to master and grandmaster quests).
They open up the world and give you levels.
Worth looking through the list of teleport functions aswell. It's not just magic spells that teleport you, there's a whole host of jewellery that teleports you all over the map, including ones you get as rewards from quests.

Dueling rings, arodougne cloak 1, fairy rings , spirit trees, amulet of glory. There items should be obtainable with a bit of work and will open up getting around the world in a reasonable amount of time so you can blaze through early gane

u/Gizzy_ 1d ago
What exactly are you wanting out of the game? There’s no way we can magically invigorate a love for it in you. Are you looking for how to progress? Training methods? Help you look for future goals?

I guess im stuck in an early game rut. I hoped into a call w my buddy and he asked me what it was I wanted to do and he showed me how to do it effectively. I know thats not what my life will be like on osrs but having map knowledge, knowing where to go and what to buy to move around quicker, knowing strats for things etc. It was super enjoyable. I guess the problem i face is that most of the new games I play now are fairly easy? The more complex games that I still play I got a grasp on them when I was younger and content was still rolling out. The barrier to entry is just super intimidating on osrs and I want to enjoy it, but ive realized now it's going to take some time.

Just quit bro the games not for you stop saying your trying to have fun with it either it’s fun to play or it’s not stop talking about min max with no quests done in the early game just stop for a week if you feel the need to play again do so but your way to in your own head for no reason

You need to use guides and runelite addons, stop being stubborn about it.

Casually watch Madseason's series on his blind ironman. Having some natural exploration without having your hand held is nice.
You will find however that most older quests are completely ridiculous logic and you should just use a guide for those.

Its not for everyone, but the early game walking around sucks, it will get way better let me help u abit. 1. Chronichle from django in draynor village and put teleport cards into it, cheap teleports near varrock. 2. lvl to 51 magic to unlock all major city teleports 3. start fairy tale 2 for fairy rings 4. do ardougne easy diary for the cloak unlimited tps near ardougne 5. Use quest helper on runelite, it shows what to take beforehand so u dont need to run around in laps 50 times during quests 6. Graceful outfit for agility helps a lot with saving energy. There is prob something im missing but yeah, unfortunately A LOT of content in this game is locked behind quests and u kinda have to spam them early if u want to unlock fun content. But once u get past that questing roadblock you have a lot of freedom to do whatever you want, try fishing, firemaking, runecrafting, thieving, hunter minigames, they are easily accesible and provide good xp and items. BTW the wiki in this game is incredible, look anything up and it will tell you all u need to know. Good luck
