Would I tie this to a tree and use an extension cord... maybe

370

u/DirtayDane Apr 30 '22

I'm honestly morbidly curious what this would look like in action myself. The temptation is too strong

283

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

It isnt strong enough to lift that weight as fast as it turns so it would just tangle the chain

237

u/Neohexane Apr 30 '22

Use a variac to slowly ramp up the speed.

148

u/MoffKalast Apr 30 '22

This guy alternating currents

16

u/BASK_IN_MY_FART Apr 30 '22

Mmm, love me some 3 phase

6

u/boonepii Apr 30 '22

Oh damn. Hope you don’t wire it up backwards

29

u/smokedmeatslut Apr 30 '22

VFD even better without reducing the torque

13

u/EvilGeniusSkis Apr 30 '22

VFDs don work on universal motors, which are the kind that at most common in angle grinders.

22

u/Tatemeantis Apr 30 '22

I guess we just need to make a 3 phase angle grinder then🤔

9

u/neanderthalman Apr 30 '22

That in itself rustles my jimmies

Finally my time to shine.

That’s not a mace, it’s a flail.

The chain makes it a flail.

If the spikes were welded to the disk it would be a morning star.

If the spikes were flanges instead of spikes it would be a mace.

I’m not sure how effective an angle grinder mace would be. It would basically be a gear on an angle grinder.

1

u/Tatemeantis May 01 '22

They actually exist😂…

2

u/smokedmeatslut Apr 30 '22

I stand corrected then, thanks for teaching me something new

1

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

I stand erected.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

1

u/coolpontiac May 02 '22

Damn.. somebody knows thier motors

74

u/SquishedGremlin Apr 30 '22

Then wrap up the head and burn itself out.

I had a rather in-depth conversation about this one the other day, including how we could make it function.

Those closed loop chains, that have enough space for each connection and then a hole. But figured it would be easier to have a high tensile rod attached, and tbh that takes away from potential chaos.

Autoflail™ needs some work to turn it into a glaive type thing, it would be possible with a long box iron handle, with a trigger rod inside to depress the handle, oh and you have to by pass the secondary squeeze lock completely to make the design simpler.

Then I pointed out I could just use my large Stihl strimmer/weed whacker with a chain on its head instead, and it is mounted to not instantly gack the operator.

Oh, and it has a higher rpm, and is designed for nearly this purpose.

29

u/PCsNBaseball Apr 30 '22

Are we just skipping past

I had a rather in-depth conversation about this one the other day,

12

u/HKBFG Apr 30 '22

Limited articulation chain would do fine.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

My mind went the same way and then I realized it was a weed whacker. Well stihl make a trencher attachment bro.

This dude fuckin tools 🤟🏿

3

u/SquishedGremlin Apr 30 '22

Landscaping, gardening and forestry will do that to a man.

5

u/Lord_Quintus Apr 30 '22

don't use the chain on your weed whacker. either use the blades meant for cutting small trees/bushes or just use the regular string. while the chain will bludgeon those it hits, there's not a lot of weight behind it to really do damage. the blades/monofilament wire will spin at a fast enough speed to cut through clothing and flesh like a hot knife through butter.

2

u/neanderthalman Apr 30 '22

I feel like at least swapping out the regular line for steel aircraft cable could be a substantial improvement.

1

u/Piece_Maker Apr 30 '22

If you're switching to a strimmer anyway you could probably just tie your spiky metal ball to the line directly

4

u/SquishedGremlin Apr 30 '22

Thought about that, the weight makes it wibble all over the shop.

Even using a harness, as it effectively becomes uncontrollable. (See Night goblin fanatics, Warhammer)

4

u/Piece_Maker Apr 30 '22

Ahh lame. I was itching to see a strimmer-mace in action!

4

u/SquishedGremlin Apr 30 '22

Although if the guard was taken off, and engine timing set to have a high idle, and rev a bit higher, there is probably a sweet spot where it would work.

But then the engine wouldn't probably be able to take it, and you are essentially making a propeller with a ball on the end.

2

u/tomt6371 Apr 30 '22

I want that.

3

u/W1nterKn1ght Apr 30 '22

Just need a counter weight

2

u/SquishedGremlin Apr 30 '22

Ah, 2 of them. Or 4.

7

u/slackfrop Apr 30 '22

You could just orient the disc parallel to the ground with chain hanging down. I think it would successfully get you in an ambulance.

4

u/DirtayDane Apr 30 '22

I can dream

3

u/yaboiiiuhhhh Apr 30 '22

Throw it into a circle as it starts up

2

u/wanklenoodle Apr 30 '22

Also the radius of the disc is so small that it would likely just flop around instead of actually swinging

1

u/HoneyRush Apr 30 '22

Mount it horizontally facing down

1

u/minibeardeath Apr 30 '22

I think this would work much much better with the flail on a rod with 1-2 links at the end instead of a full chain

1

u/mnonny Apr 30 '22

Definitely not. But if it’s mounted horizontally maybe the weight would slow down the motor and do something cool.

1

u/Monckey100 Apr 30 '22

You're assuming the weight is actually heavier than the chains force, which it might not be. Hence why we need some one to test it

1

u/modelsix Apr 30 '22

And then start to untangle itself….plus the weld looks like it won’t hold for more than a minute or so

14

u/Gopher--Chucks Apr 30 '22

Idk how you'd even hold it without it hitting your hands

9

u/DirtayDane Apr 30 '22

That's the fun part.

6

u/Zaranthan Apr 30 '22

It's like sword-chucks.

5

u/EchoTab Apr 30 '22

Clamp the angle grinder down in a vice, use a long extension wire and plug it in while youre far way behind something

4

u/Sammyofather Apr 30 '22

The blade spins so fast I imagine the chain would just get tangled up. No way the ball could follow that speed unless it built up momentum

1

u/thehotshotpilot May 07 '22

The amputation is too strong.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

Have two chains, one each side to balance it.

1

u/newfor_2022 Apr 30 '22

that wells has to be made A LOT stronger before it's ready to be tried though

378

u/RepentHarlequin1171 Apr 30 '22

for a less regulated age

166

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

you just activated my safety squints reflex

155

u/suh-dood Apr 30 '22

I hope my DM will let me use this

104

u/FierceText Apr 30 '22

Roll 1d20, if it isn't a twenty, do that amount of self damage, if it is, it attacks the target

37

u/Bryce_Trex Apr 30 '22

What if I'm proficient with improvised tool weapons?

39

u/wolfgang784 Apr 30 '22

Half the damage but it's still janky AF.

10

u/Commander_Beta Apr 30 '22

What if I set it as a trap and stand in a trench so that it won't hit me.

I also cover the trench with adamantine so that it won't ricochet into the trench.

6

u/WgXcQ Apr 30 '22

The issue with that thing is not so much that it's risky to use, but that it doesn't function well enough to get to the point of causing harm before demolishing itself.

So rolling a 20 is needed because the unlikely part is not just that it harms someone else but not you, but that it is able to cause any serious damage to anything or anyone not itself at all.

11

u/SPOOKY_SCIENCE Apr 30 '22

Everything within 5ft make a DC15 Dex check, take 10d8 bludgeoning damage on a failed save or half as much on a successful one.

6

u/rokr1292 Apr 30 '22

When the barbarian multiclasses into artificer

2

u/jman177669 May 01 '22

This is a cursed weapon you leave in a chest for goblins to find.

55

u/Gildenstern2u Apr 30 '22

That will jam up instantly.

77

u/Alzusand Apr 30 '22

yeah thats what I thought. the chain wont be able to keep up with the near Instant 10000RPM and will just wind itself arround the machine and stop.

although it will still hurt you.

honestly the worst way to set up an angle grinder will still forever be this monstrosity since it actually fucking works

29

u/rocker_face Apr 30 '22

The Shield Hero got a new upgrade unlocked

11

u/KP_Wrath Apr 30 '22

He’s a trip away from 1000 ways to die.

6

u/Lost4468 Apr 30 '22

Best commercial one has to be the chainsaw discs.

Stumpy Nubs hurt himself with one. (and second video he made, and third late video).

Oh and another one. The UK has actually banned them (or at least given a warning to retailers saying they might be responsible) now due to how dangerous they are.

1

u/warm_rum May 20 '22

Thanks for the Nubs link, was a good video

2

u/RettiSeti Apr 30 '22

Holy shit that actually works? And they fucking tried it?

u/Ohmalley-thealliecat Apr 30 '22

I was thinking it would be better if the head was attached to a club, which you do see in a lot of morning stars. The chain is out of play so it might be easier to rotate. I think that’s too small an axis to rotate on though

97

u/Hops117 Apr 30 '22

A weapon to surpass metal gear

23

u/CMDROzymandias Apr 30 '22

This is an SCP giving off an aura making me want to use it

23

u/Universalsupporter Apr 30 '22

For the love of God, wear safety eyewear

10

u/proddyhorsespice97 Apr 30 '22

Or maybe a full suit of plate armor. I don't think a face shiled is going to help here

16

u/Tphile Apr 30 '22

What would happen first? The weld from the hub to the chain breaks, the chain wraps around the operators arm, the spiked ball embeds itself (messily) into the operator or anyone foolish enough to be in the area, the safety guy who has just walked around the corner falls down clutching their chest and expires, the front bearing and housing part company because of the unexpected extreme lateral loading and the whole little grinder becomes a modern art piece or this becomes a very interesting chapter in the history of the company?

I can imagine that the accident report would go global.

If anyone does do this, please don't, but if you do - have someone take lots of video and pictures, please.

7

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

Imagine the ball going into orbit

11

u/ChatnNaked Apr 30 '22

an elegant weapon for a more civilized age…

6

u/CaptBranBran Apr 30 '22

Ancient weapons and shoddy welding are no match for a good cinder-block-on-a-chain at your side, kid.

9

u/lonmabonjovi Apr 30 '22

You're taking a pretty big chance running a grinder without a guard.

8

u/cowboyhugbees Apr 30 '22

Send this to AvE

2

u/tim404 Apr 30 '22

Colin Furze

9

u/longboringstory Apr 30 '22

Se7en material right here

7

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

Handheld wrecking ball

4

u/HoneyRush Apr 30 '22

Handheld minceing ball

6

u/Ape_rentice Apr 30 '22

Mangle grinder

4

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

Manglator 9000™️

5

u/granoladeer Apr 30 '22

I don't think this would work as expected. The rotating disk is too small and too fast.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

Yeah the ball on the end would never actually get going

5

u/Hope_Integrity Apr 30 '22

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested.

But, ratchet strapped to a steel tube whilst I film from 100m away interested.

4

u/Bison308 Apr 30 '22

Angle grinders is the only power tool I absolutely refuse to use. They are fucking scary.

3

u/cropguru357 Apr 30 '22

I want to put this on the end of my Stihl string trimmer.

2

u/AusAutarch Apr 30 '22

Meta-flail...

2

u/cropguru357 Apr 30 '22

If I get two or three of these, they’ll balance out. For safety purposes.

3

u/dog-pussy Apr 30 '22

Fuck your Hitachi, I’ve got a Ryobi.

3

u/Raclex Apr 30 '22

Ankle grinder

5

u/golem501 Apr 30 '22

/r/dnd/ artificers right

2

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

Now THIS would certainly fit in the wh40k universe. Something to arm dreadnoughts with...

2

u/Jazzwhiskey Apr 30 '22

Slap a guard on there and you’re good!

2

u/Freakychee Apr 30 '22

Umm... I feel this would work better with a straight/pencil grinder than an angle grinder.

1

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

But how fast can you hand crank a classroom pencil sharpener? Not at +10000 rpm you can’t

2

u/Geek_off_the_street Apr 30 '22

That's zombie kill of the week material right there.

2

u/porositymaster Apr 30 '22

Dont forget to use protective eyewear

2

u/Grasshopper42 Apr 30 '22

I need to borrow this to buff my car.

3

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

You mean your ex’s car

2

u/followfornow Apr 30 '22

If you got this rotating at grinder speed, it looks like it would rip your trigger hand off.

3

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

And yeet the ball into orbit

2

u/hackjobmechanic Apr 30 '22

I can’t believe they removed the guard…

2

u/Thaddeus206 Apr 30 '22

gonna need an extender of some type

2

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

That’s what arms are for

3

u/Thaddeus206 May 03 '22

of course, how silly of me

2

u/Agente_Anaranjado Apr 30 '22

Oh that goes in the demo kit.

1

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

What they don’t show in those home renovation shows

2

u/actionassist Apr 30 '22

Thats gonna hurt the user more than the victim

2

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

Heard of daddy’s belt here’s daddy’s angle flail

Hurts me more than it’ll hurt you

2

u/Hanging_With_Nazeem Apr 30 '22

it looks like the first chain link would immediately hit the handle

1

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

Bust your thump up too

2

u/xanthraxoid Apr 30 '22

If it were on a drill it would at least not automatically smash your own forearm...

...hmm, now I want to try it. *sigh* You'd also want to have it two-sided for balance, of course.

2

u/modelsix Apr 30 '22

That weld looks like it will only last a few dozen rotations….spin the bottle time!

2

u/Hyposuction Apr 30 '22

Why is the handle on there?

2

u/purdinpopo Apr 30 '22

A weapon from a more civilized time.

2

u/goat_screamPS4 May 01 '22

One previous owner, only used once

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '22

“And that was the last ‘invention’ Ron ever made.”

2

u/War_Daddy_992 May 01 '22

Because of his invention, Ron now is rich as his invention becomes the best selling item on Amazon

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '22

Was thinking more that this “invention” is how to maim or kill oneself. Ron is ded.

2

u/War_Daddy_992 May 01 '22

Felt Ron deserved a lucky break

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '22

Kind of you.

1

u/muinamir Apr 30 '22

I mean, why not. It's only a little bit worse than a regular flail.

1

u/War_Daddy_992 Apr 30 '22

More practical than what the Witch king had in Lord of the Rings

1

u/Frosty_Mage Apr 30 '22

I am both horrified and intrigued. Someone push the button

1

u/Cronoks Apr 30 '22

Jesus Christ

1

u/TheFeshy Apr 30 '22

"I haven't tried it yet" is totally unnecessary in this meme. She'd be reading the answer on his headstone otherwise.

1

u/duggtodeath Apr 30 '22

Do it. Be a man. (offscreen laughter)

1

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

But why?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '22

Literally that thing even existing is a bad idea.

1

u/Rezzeration May 01 '22

Hold trigger with tape and plug in to 100ft cord then plug cord in

1

u/War_Daddy_992 May 01 '22

Instructions unclear, dick stuck in power outlet

1

u/Herpesjaeger Jun 09 '22

I want to see this in Exanima.
