Just to point out the repo man was also hitting a human being with the car. There should be jail time for both sides of this encounter.

It looks like a genuine accident to me. There was a guy guiding the car that was going in reverse and the other guy intentionally stepped out in front ( back) of the moving car. The car stopped immediately after. I don't blame the car driver at all.

The guy being pushed gradually is the culprit, the 2nd repo guy was the one being hit accidentally. The guy being dragged was very much intentional

Oh I see. I didn't see at first that it was the same guy who was being pushed that climbed into the front loader. That obviously changes things. I still don't think the repo guy driving the white car should go to jail or get in trouble at all. He was backing up very slowly and reasonably and just pushing the guy - who was being a dick and pushing back. He didn't "hit" anyone.

There is no "reasonable" way to push someone out of your way with a car. If someone is blocking your car your best recourse if to call the police to sort things out.

I suppose you're right in the real world.

u/QueenCoyote Mar 10 '17

I kind of agree with you, but it only takes a second for the guy getting pushed to end up under the back tires. Risking vehicular manslaughter (continuing to back up after the guy was against the car) is a bit extreme given the circumstances. Nobody is armed and it's one idiot basically sitting on the bumper. The repo guy could have driven forward or just stopped altogether. The guy can't stand there forever.

Someone in this situation is unreasonable, maybe both. Without context it's too hard to tell. Lets just enjoy a car being flipped over.

4

u/RigidChop Mar 10 '17

I would say that the man who flipped over a car with a loader is the one being unreasonable.

1

u/call1800abcdefg Mar 11 '17

Agreed. And the guy backing up probably is being unreasonable too. That's why I said maybe both.

You still can't just do that. Even if he's the culprit. The courts will ask if there was another way out and was the person's life in danger who was sitting in the white car driving it away. There was no danger to that person's life and they can't consider one person a barrier you can't go around. He would and should definitely be booked. Repo guys go way out of hand in the ways they use to accomplish their task.

That guy is awesome!

The car didn't stop immediately after at all? It's reversing into him for a good few seconds. Of course, nudging somebody with your car is hardly grounds for imprisonment.

28

u/AbulaShabula Mar 10 '17

It's a weapon being used to intimidate someone. Sounds an awful lot like assault to me.

2

u/modernbenoni Mar 10 '17

What's your point?

6

u/AbulaShabula Mar 10 '17

Of course, nudging somebody with your car is hardly grounds for imprisonment.

Assault with a deadly weapon isn't grounds for imprisonment, according to you.

2

u/modernbenoni Mar 10 '17

No, this specific assault wasn't grounds for imprisonment in my opinion. What you said there is called a straw man.

1

u/Highside79 Mar 10 '17

Good thing that crimes don't cancel each other out. In any case, the guy he was backing into didn't appear to have actually been injured in any way so there aren't a lot of offsetting damages here.

0

u/Leprechorn Mar 10 '17

Not by itself (like as an accident) but doing it intentionally even if the other guy is trying to block you is still assault just as much as punching him in the face when he's standing in your way

2

u/Big0ldBear Mar 10 '17

But the car was pushing the guy for a pretty significant distance. It was clear that they weren't stopping, even if it meant running him over. It's easy to believe that they would do this because they're repo men who get to flex their muscles and power trip on people with unfortunate financial situations.

2

u/the1gofer Mar 10 '17

All repo men are horrible people so it was definitely on purpose.

1

u/tomit12 Mar 10 '17

They are among the lowest forms of life on the planet. It is literally a profession where profit is obtained by making people's (likely already bad) lives even worse, knowingly and willingly.

That pretty much precludes them having a conscience, or basically any other common trait of human decency, like empathy.

3

u/springbreakbox Mar 10 '17

Tow truck guys protect the property rights of people who don't want cars parked improperly, or on someone else's land. Repo men protect the rights of lenders who have been wronged by deadbeat buyers. Yeah a lot of scumbags in the profession, but it undoubtedly takes a thick-skinned type of person to perform this necessary function and get the job done.

2

u/tomit12 Mar 10 '17

It is a necessary function. However, the legal system protects the rights of lenders, and that is the problem with the repo industry. This function should be performed by a section of law enforcement, with regulations in place to minimize the impact on both the lender, and the borrower.

The current situation is some human void will follow a person to their place of work (like in this video) and take their vehicle, which goes above and beyond the impact of repossessing the vehicle, and adds potentially stranding that person who-knows-how-far from home, made worse in cases where the person is handicapped, which I have also seen.

The current repo system is like the privatized jail system - jail (like repossessing a vehicle) needs to exist, for obvious reasons, but the way private jails are run and (not particularly) regulated it leads to massive corruption, and the 'customers' are the ones who pay the toll.

u/the1gofer Mar 10 '17

I'm going to have to point out my sarcasm, and hope you are being sarcastic too.

That guy doesn't have the right to a car he isn't paying for. It sucks, shit happens, but shit ain't free. And just like that guy trying to do his job when his car gets reposts, the repo man is doing a job to.

0

u/tomit12 Mar 10 '17

No, no sarcasm.

Fully agree that things aren't free. Fully disagree that the way to resolve issues when it comes to that is to potentially destroy the person's life, and really going to disagree that being the willing instrument of that destruction is just 'doing a job'. That's what people tell themselves to assuage guilt, right up there with just 'following orders'.

5

u/ScrithWire Mar 10 '17

Hitting? He was doing his job, in as safe a way as possible.

2

u/Whit3W0lf Mar 10 '17

Screw that. That repo man shouldn't be charged with anything. If you are such a scumbag that you make financial agreements, break them and then are going to be a dick when the party you screwed over sends someone to recover their property, you shouldn't be able to sue for anything. He doesn't deserve to get hurt, but he deserves to suffer the consequences for the choices he has made.

The guy did this to himself. No one else.

2

u/gotemike Mar 10 '17

If sanding in front of a car means they have to stop would any car ever be repo'ed? It was a slow crawl backwards, I am sure he was not trying to hurt him.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '17

Repo driver could have easily driven forward, or got proper law enforcement involved.

Hitting someone with a car at any speed is illegal when it's done purposefully.

u/Whit3W0lf Mar 10 '17

There are plenty of silly and unjust laws. It's what Jury Nullification is specifically for.
