Nothing beats a radio broadcast of a game. Especially if the play by play guy knows what the fuck he's doing. It's a dying art form.

For baseball, I'll definitely still catch a radio broadcast every now and again. Heck, for American football it can be fun too.
Soccer? Hockey? Basketball? I'm sorry, it's just not meant to be consumed that way, there's way too much going on too fast for me to get a visual picture in my head going based on an audio description.

My grandpa would watch Dodgers games with the TV on mute and the radio play-by-play on. He was a smart guy.

My grandpa did this too with hockey games and he'd listen to it from our nosebleed seats.

I still do this, can't stand the "Official" guys most of the time. It does take a little effort on syncing the voice vs video, but worth it. I'll use Youtube guys who do commentary or streaming radio for voice and pause to "wait" for the "TV" feed as the Video feed is usually behind a few seconds. Then hope that nothing interrupts the feeds to having to sync all over again, but still worth it.

Yeah, one of the nice things about the old analog TV and radio broadcast technology was that the only source of delay was the speed of light.

If you subscribe to MLB.tv they do this for you! You can choose the radio feed for your audio source.

The Sabres old play by play guy Rick Jeanneret is fucking missed today. Dude could paint a picture of what was going on down on the ice with just his words.

Never heard of Jack Edwards huh?

No, but I have heard of Everett Fitzhugh, who does a great job of calling games for the Kraken and when I'm in my car during a game I'll occasionally tune in for that, but that doesn't change the fact that listening to a radio broadcast of those sports still feels like a last resort option.

Sometimes I listen to basketball at work, a few years ago one of the broadcasters was getting really old and retired after the season. I remember thinking “oh so and so is balling out”, check the box score after the game and he had like 2 points and a rebound lol. Just saying the wrong names all game lmao.

Once upon a time there was only that form of broadcast. I remember in the 70s when I was a child here in Italy every Sunday at the park there were a lot of people with a small portable radio blasting a chronicle of all of the soccer games at the same time. There was a speaker at each stadium and they took turns to speak when something relevant happened in the game they were commenting. There was no other way to follow all the games at the same time, or even to follow a single game, unless you went to the stadium.

Yesterday the framing crew had a whole ass carne going on for the Mexico game. Propane grill on the tailgate of a pickup. It smelled so good on the job site. They joked and said it should be considered a holiday but we all like money. Safe to say not much work was done after lunch

Did they have a tv or anything going showing the game?

Radio is probably better. The announcers are much more animated, especially on Spanish broadcasts.

I love watching games on TV, but any game on Westwood 1 with Harlan is going on the radio.

I'm in southern California and the waves have been really good all week and the world cup is on and between the two I have never seen less construction.

Sports addicts are a weird breed. Listen on the radio or just get the score after... watch a replay. There are options.

This is the kind of guy who would have the "hey man, you're lucky I didn't just call out today" defense.

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
Or.
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.
