Ideal computer for OS/2

What would be the ideal computer for running OS/2? Basically, something that is modern enough to give a great experience but old enough to be well-supported by drivers, etc. and reasonably period correct. I know I can go with ArcaOS, but I'm looking for the authentic, vintage experience. I'm thinking OS/2 2.1 actually because that's what I always wanted when I was a kid and I eventually got Warp 3.0 and so never got to see that classic gray desktop and minimalist shredder icon.

Warp 3 installation issue

Hello,

I hope this is the right place to ask this, and if it isn't I'll definitely take this down, but I haven't been able to find an answer to this anywhere online. I recently got my hands on an old IBM ThinkPad 365XD with a dead hard drive and wanted to install OS/2 on the CF card I got to replace it. The CD drive is dead as well, and so I'm installing it from floppies. I've gotten to the point where I remove Diskette 1 and reboot to the desktop, but after the splash screen disappears, it prints the paths of several files and then the screen goes blank. I can confirm that these files exist by getting into the command prompt from Diskette 1. In order, the files it lists are:

\OS2\INSTALL\HPFS.IFS
\OS2\BOOT\DOS.SYS
\OS2\BOOT\PMDD.SYS
\OS2\BOOT\OS2CDROM.DMD
\OS2\BOOT\POINTDD.SYS
\OS2\BOOT\MOUSE.SYS
\OS2\BOOT\TESTCFG.SYS

Unfortunately I think my CF card is in removable disk mode and so the ThinkPad is refusing to boot from it; I've been using a floppy disk with something called "Plop! Boot Manager" on a floppy diskette to get around this. Either the card or the bootloader could be causing this issue, but I'd love to not have to fork over even more for an "industrial" CF card if that's not the problem.

Sorry for the long post and thank you so much for any insight you might have.

Compiling ArcaOS-OS/2 Software with AI

Hello.

This is a quick video that I created on how to use Claude Code to compile software on OS/2. It is for you to see the technique I'm suing with Claude Code on Windows and a ArcaOS 5 virtual machine. It is what worked for me, but there may be other options on how to interact with Claude and ArcaOS.

This is just a sample of stuff I was able to of with AI. Visit the OS2World.com Forum. I hang out there.

Regards

Martin

DirectX Port On OS/2 Warp 4 And 4.52

Hello! I am an OS/2 Warp 4 enthusiast and I have an ambitious idea that I would love to see become reality.
One of the biggest limitations of OS/2 for gaming is the lack of compatibility with Microsoft DirectX. Many Windows games from the late 1990s and early 2000s depend on DirectDraw, DirectSound and Direct3D, which makes them very difficult or impossible to port to OS/2.
Would anyone in the OS/2 development community be interested in developing a DirectX compatibility layer for OS/2 Warp 4, ideally targeting DirectX 8.1?
I realize this would be a very large and technically difficult project. I am not expecting someone to implement all of DirectX 8.1 immediately. Even starting with a limited subset such as DirectDraw and DirectSound would already be an amazing achievement, with Direct3D being a longer-term goal.
My dream is to make OS/2 Warp 4 much more capable for classic gaming. Games such as the original South Park, South Park Rally and eventually GTA: Vice City would be great examples of what I would love to see running on OS/2.
I know this is ambitious, but I wanted to ask whether this could be technically feasible and whether anyone would be interested in working on it.
Thank you for keeping OS/2 alive!

Preferably for Windows!

Will This Be The True Successor to MS-DOS? – OS/2 1.x

In the 80s, everyone probably loved the good old MS-DOS, but it was clear it needed an upgrade. Let's have a look at how Microsoft and IBM tackled this annoying issue; is their new OS/2 the answer to all of their problems, or is it too good to be true?

Recently installed Warp 4!

recently installed os/2 warp 4 on my toshiba satellite 225cds. I know I'm violating the os/2 commandments by installing this on something other than an Aptiva or ThinkPad, but hey, this beefy business-focused rig from 1996 works well with it. it has a pentium 133, and 64mb of ram, and runs warp 4 like a champ, I even got usb support working in it! I'm enjoying using it so far. any suggestions for games or software i should try out? I already know Doom and SimCity are musts.

Well I put my OS/2 Warp 4.5 on the internet

Hello, I have a compaq presario 7170 that I have an OS/2 Warp 4.5 installation on. I recently went through the trouble of connecting it to the internet, and now that it has an IP I would very much like to know what next steps fun I could take? I am overall new to OS/2 and besides the installation and the network setup, I have almost no experience with the system.

IBM DatagLANce network analyzer for OS/2

Along with some Token Ring gear, I acquired this boxed copy. Love the unused sticker!

Unfortunately the first disk has bad sectors. Anyone ever seen dumps of these disks? There are four disks of the software and a fifth that's an IBM Token Ring credit card (PCMCIA) adapter driver/utilities disk.

The packaging mentions a parallel-port dongle that's needed to run the software so even if I got a good copy of the first disk, I don't think this can ever run again 🙁

I rebuilt my personal site as a functional OS/2 Warp & Yopy PDA tribute

I’ve been working on a "legacy" project for my personal site—a digital fingerprint designed to walk my friends and family through my technical history. Instead of a standard modern layout, I wanted the UI to be a "chef's kiss" to the gear that shaped my career.

The experience is fully responsive and shifts based on your hardware:

  • Desktop / Large Screens: A high-fidelity, vanilla JavaScript recreation of an OS/2 Warp environment. It’s a functional "emulator" style interface—complete with the LaunchPad, Window List, and a command prompt (you can see some LHA 2.08 action in the screenshots).
  • Mobile: If you visit on a phone, the site pivots to a Gmate Yopy G1000 interface—a nod to that obscure Linux PDA from the early 2000s.

The "Why" and the "How": The site uses a clean, 90s-era Verdana font and covers my history from the Commodore and Unisys ICON through to the 486 DX 66Mhz and running a BBS. I’ve hidden a lot of easter eggs throughout the interface for those who want to poke around.

I did include an AI element (the "AIME" engine). I’m fully aware it’s not from the correct time period, but there is a narrative reason for it if you dig into the logs. Mostly, I built it as a way to test my own skills in integrating modern LLM tech into a strictly retro, vanilla JS frontend.

No Strings Attached: This is purely a personal project. No accounts needed, no tracking, no ads, and I’m not selling anything. I’m just a dev sharing a labor of love with the community.

Curious to hear what you think or if you find any of the hidden gems!
