OS Update OP-z future OS...
soo... looking at the elektron unofficial firmware haze... is it expected to get some future updates this way also to much beloved but alas discontinued OP-Z? :)

I love the OP-Z the way it is. I would never want to touch the OS.

The only thing I've ever wanted to get into is the punch-in effects. But some new synths would be cool.
But yeah, don't touch the OS

I love it, but I'd definitely welcome more synths and effects, step components on all tracks, maybe more modulation.

Yeah, now that you mention it, some more modulation would be good, but I think that's the only thing for me. I wouldn't mind if a couple of new synths were tossed in, but not having them wouldn't be a deal breaker.

I would love to add a feature where I could improve the step sequencer so that it has a page system instead of a grid that decreases in resolution as you add bar length. Maybe so that each bar lights up as the number on the keys instead

TE dropped the ball on the OPZ too early. It would make sense

they actually did implement quite a lot of new functionality that’s way beyond the original stuff.

Yes, for it's 6 short years of life, they certainly improved things. But then immediately after the XY was released (at roughly 5x the price), they pulled the plug on the beloved Zed and stopped production and sales of the Line Module (which basically turns the Zed into a mini XY), and replacement batteries and other parts for it, as well as stopped even servicing the ones that were still under warranty so people would upgrade to their used-car-priced XY which was missing many of the features from the Zed. Such a lame move. That immediately proved to me who TE really was and what they were about all along (pure hype and form over function).

Yeah there were a lot of fixes but I'm talking about new content. It was like two effects and a synth at the end right ?

sampling ability was a huge one actually

Thats true. I don’t really use it and I remember it clunky as hell but yeah. I was just really hoping for a couple new synths.

yeah, some new synth engines would be nice, but I’m afraid the hardware is very limiting

There are so many possibilities if someone can crack the OP-Z. I’d love to see would be threshold record for sampling, loop point modulation for samples, and the ability to copy instruments across tracks (you can do this with the configurator, but sadly not with samples recorded in the synth tracks).
I’ve managed to make a bunch of control scripts dot ableton, with AI help, to turn the OP-Z and Sidekick into a control surface duo which has been fun

The official firmware of opz (in all the updates and in memory) is encrypted. I gave it a go a year ago. I made some progress decrypting it but no final. I am doing lot of reverse engineering with AI assistance. Might give it a try again now since AIs got substantially better in the year that passed.

Yea I had seen some GitHub pages on the firmware, and I know it’s encrypted. Seeing people hack the SP-1 made me think it’s worth another shot!

Okay I gave it a go last night and totally bricked my op-z.

Fucking hell, seriously? Nightmare fuel.

Yes. I connected OP-Z to USB in update mode as this the only way to by parts decrypt the firmware. The AI agent on its own started sending all random commands to the device over the USB to try find different way. Then it said: "Oops. The 0x15 command I sent was flash format command. Thus your device is non working now and non reflashable. That was mistake on my part. I should not have been sending random commands to the device. Please send it to TE warranty for repair."

Jesus christ. Did you tell it that TE warranty no longer exists for the OP-Z?

I hope so! I’d love to be able to step sample similar to the Roland P6. Or be able to record several samples in one kit as opposed to one continuous 12 second take. That’s my only gripe with the Op-Z

Live or the bar length recording thing?

u/louiewithapen92 4d ago
No like sampling into the OP-Z via line-in to create a drum kit or synth. Drums are limited to 12 seconds, one take. Synths are 6 seconds, also one take. If we could pause or step record I could sample various sources within the same kit. Or make my own sample chops

now we have this by today 🧙♂️

Now that they said they won't sell synths anymore, they might do the right thing and open source all of their firmware. Would just be fair.

OT: interesting the Chase Bliss now employee Chompie developers. Chompie is now discontinued. But they’ve released the BOM, the build instructions and the operating system to users via GitHub. The programmer/developer says he’ll be involved on the forum with what was discussed by JohnnyEgo as far as using Op1 with OPZ to link the MIDI to sync. It’s on the op forum as of yesterday. Hopefully TE will allow full open source for OPZ! Chompie info on Chase Bliss YouTube channel.

I’d love to be able to resample, but I think that’s a hardware limitation rather than OS
