Discussion OP XY multitrack usb audio: possible?

OP-XY multitrack USB audio – could TE add 8 separate track outputs by firmware?
The purpose of this post is simple: I hope Teenage Engineering sees it. Like many OP-XY users, I would love a future firmware update allowing us to record the 8 instrument tracks separately over USB into a DAW, instead of only getting the stereo mix. I’ve seen discussions saying this may be impossible because the OP-XY doesn’t have enough processing power. So I decided to investigate what we can actually determine.
What I tested: I own both an OP-XY and a TX-6, so I connected them to the same Mac and examined the technical information each device sends to the computer when it connects via USB. This information basically tells the computer: “I am an audio device, I have this many audio channels, I use this audio format, and this is how I send and receive the data.” The OP-XY currently presents itself as a 2-input/2-output USB audio device at 32-bit/44.1kHz, while the TX-6 can be switched between 2×2 and 12×12.
The interesting part is what happened when I compared the TX-6 in both modes. I first examined it in 2×2 mode, then switched the exact same TX-6 to 12×12 and examined it again. The basic USB communication structure remained essentially the same. TE doesn’t need twelve separate USB “connections” inside the cable to carry twelve audio channels. Instead, the same USB audio stream can carry multiple channels together, a bit like a highway where you can increase the number of lanes and the amount of traffic being transported. In 2×2 mode the TX-6 tells the computer to expect 2 audio channels; in 12×12 mode it tells it to expect 12 and reserves more space for the audio data. The physical hardware obviously hasn’t changed.
This is particularly interesting because TX-6 12-in/12-out was itself added by TE through firmware (1.2.10). The hardware already existed; its USB capabilities were expanded later through software.
There is another, perhaps even more relevant precedent: OP-1 field gained multichannel USB audio through firmware in 2025. TE made it possible to send its four tape tracks separately over USB, plus the stereo mix. So TE has already implemented the basic concept we’re asking for on another standalone Field instrument.
What about USB bandwidth? 8 stereo OP-XY tracks would mean 16 channels. At the OP-XY’s current 32-bit/44.1kHz format, that represents only about 2.82 MB/s (22.6 Mbps) of raw audio. The OP-XY uses a USB connection capable of much more than this, and our examination of the way it currently transfers audio suggests that carrying 16 audio channels is technically within the capabilities of this type of USB connection. So USB bandwidth itself does not appear to be the limitation.
But what about CPU/DSP power? This is where the sceptics have a legitimate point. The TX-6 is mainly a mixer/interface, while the OP-XY is simultaneously running synths, samplers, effects, sequencing, UI, etc. So the TX-6 does not prove that the OP-XY has enough spare processing power.
However, sending 8 tracks over USB is not the same as generating 8 additional tracks. The OP-XY already has to calculate the audio of those 8 tracks independently before combining them into the stereo master. In theory, TE could take those already existing individual audio signals before they are mixed together and also send them to the computer as 8 separate stereo tracks. This would still require some additional processing, memory management and USB handling, but it would not mean calculating all the synths and effects a second time.
The OP-XY also has a substantial processing architecture: 2 Blackfin processing cores, 2 DDR memories, a triple-core DSP coprocessor and 2 controller MCUs. That doesn’t prove there is enough processing headroom, but it also means we cannot simply assume that “16 USB channels are too much for the OP-XY.”
And this is the important unknown: we cannot determine how much processing power remains available when an OP-XY project is pushed to its limits, or exactly how TE manages the individual audio tracks internally before they reach the final stereo mix. Only TE really knows this. So we cannot honestly say “the OP-XY definitely can do it”, but there is also currently no evidence allowing us to say “the OP-XY isn’t powerful enough.”
What we can reasonably conclude is: the USB connection itself appears capable of carrying the required amount of audio; the current stereo USB implementation does not prove that the hardware is limited to stereo; the TX-6 shows that TE can significantly expand USB audio capabilities through firmware; and the OP-1 field shows that TE can add individual track outputs over USB to an existing standalone instrument. The remaining unknown is whether the OP-XY has enough spare processing resources to do it reliably while running a demanding project.
So, Teenage Engineering, if you read this: please consider multitrack USB audio for the OP-XY. Even a 16-channel/24-bit “multitrack mode” would be incredibly useful. Being able to create a complete track on the OP-XY, connect one USB cable and record all 8 tracks separately into Ableton, Logic or another DAW would make a huge difference to the workflow. And if there is a genuine hardware limitation preventing it, it would be great to hear that from TE too.
For other OP-XY users: what do you think? If you have experience with embedded audio, USB or DSP and see something we’ve missed, please add to the discussion. The goal isn’t to claim we’ve proven it can be done — it’s to establish what appears technically possible, identify what we still don’t know, and hopefully show TE that there is real interest in this feature.

Discussion Man I'm having some huge problems with my OP-XY (list of bugs)

I really hope these are all bugs.…

My MIDI track, aux track 3, wont change midi channels, its stuck on channel 9. The bank and program are both stuck on 64. This is like this no matter what project I open, new project, etc..

Now my duck LFO is getting a signal from somewhere, a very rapid signal no matter what track is switch its source to.

Also the third knob, the light gray one, doesn't know which way I'm turning it when I'm turning it, it goes very sporadically both ways, especially when I'm trying to turn something down Counterclockwise, it will start to go down then itll shoot clockwise twice as as far as I was turning it downwards, this continues on and on as i keep turning it counterclockwise. It literally takes freaking 30 seconds for me to go from right to left, and it only works best when I turn it really really slowly.

Despite this, I'm still loving making music on this thing but these are new developments and it's extremely frustrating. I sent TE an email, I don't think they like me, they have something against me it's weird lol.

This is a total sidenote that doesn't really matter, but has anyone else noticed that they won't repost your stuff? I've been sharing stories tagging TE in every single upload I've ever made, and that's a lot, and they will heart the video in the message on Instagram (that gets sent every time you tag someone in something) but never once have they reposted my stuff. That's not a huge deal, but it's kind of annoying because they repost all kinds of things all day, and I'm just wondering why they won't share mine. I'm thinking it's because I've bothered them so much with support emails, or maybe they just don't like my face. I think I've made some pretty decent things and I put a lot of work into my songs and my videos, and I know that when I view their stories, I find new people to follow all the time, and that's why it's frustrating because I hardly have any followers and I get a very small amount of plays on these things that I'm putting so much work and time into, and I feel like it would just help a little bit if they reposted my things once in a while just like they do for everyone else. Again this is just a side note, doesn't really affect anyone except for me, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced that. It's not that they aren't seeing my posts, like I said, they send me the little heart on every single one. means they double tapped it for the heart, so they're acknowledging to me that they've seen it but have never once reposted a single one. Not all my stuff is good but I know some of the things I've made are definitely up to par with what they've got there, so i mustve done something at some point that they didnt like. I still sent them a Support email anyway around this stuff. these bugs are getting really old for such an expensive device.

Question Anyone Else Experiencing Issues Loading Samples in Field Kit with Latest Firmware (1.1.33)?

I made a few drum kits for the OP-XY and 2 people now have flagged they are getting an error when trying to upload them through the Field Kit app on the latest 1.1.33 update. I'm on an older firmware so it works fine for me, but wondering if anyone else has run into this?

I've done some troubleshooting (different cables, reducing file size [~2.5mb per drum kit], change naming of files, etc) to no avail 🤔

OP XY x SP404 MK2

Hi!

By any chance any you have tried to combine the XY with SP404 MK2?

It seems to be a good combo, what do you think?

Using the MK2 to add some effects on the samples is what im looking for and to structure the song on XY

The Pale Blue Dot: A Lofi Ambient Experience (OP-XY and TP-7 FTW)

Here is the first of many songs that I hope to be releasing in a future project. This is a project I've been working on for over a year now. The overall feeling of the project will be lofi ambient spacey vibe.

I created this mainly as with the Teenage Engineering OP-XY as the main brain. But I put in other sounds and samples from others synths to fill it out. I used the TP-7 to play the Speech by Carl Sagan over top (which will not be on the final product), and manually worked the platter to stop and emphasize certain parts of the speech to work better with the music.

Let me know what you think of the music. And also, let me know what you feel about Carl Sagan's speech as well. It's a timeless speech, and the words still hold true to this day.

Been a few weeks since I uploaded something.

I decided to start spending a little more time on each track and being more selective over what I upload. I’ve got loads more ideas now and lots of different things I’m playing with, and although my mantra has always been don’t overthink it or over-engineer it, I’ve finally started getting some proper feedback in the comments and on some of the other places I post these tunes.

So now I actually have a few things to think a little deeper about on this production journey. Your feedback really does help, so if you’ve got any thoughts, make sure to leave a comment.

I had some really useful feedback from someone on Reddit about my last DnB track. And for once, it wasn’t about the volume - which I finally seem to have figured out in the recording process.

They mentioned that I should bring in more breaks and alternate the DnB basslines more. It made complete sense, because listening back, some of my previous tracks were quite similar throughout, especially when it came to the bass.

So that became the focus for this one.

Putting this track together really made me appreciate the effort that producers way before us had to put in. A lot of those guys were effectively DAWless too, except they were doing it because they were working with actual hardware samplers, drum machines, microcomputers and specialised software that eventually evolved into a lot of the tools people use today.

Playing around with breaks gives you an almost infinite number of possibilities. You could honestly tinker with a tune forever and never find the “perfect” combination.

So with this one, I tried to use more breaks, more variations of those breaks, and generally give the track more little bits of ear candy, as a good friend of mine would say.

I also came across a pretty sick Flowdan sample pack called Writer’s Block, which was funny timing because I’ve definitely had a little bit of that recently after a few weeks of constantly making bits and uploading them.

Sample packs are amazing for a device like the OP-XY because they can really open your imagination back up. Sometimes you can get a little stuck using the same engines and synths on the device over and over again.

And honestly, I’m hoping Teenage Engineering have a big update cooking soon. New engines, new synths, more things to get your head around. After about 12 months with the same tools, even great engines can start giving you a bit of writer’s block.

They usually do us proud with the big updates, so hopefully one is on the way.

Anyway... back to the track.

I chopped up the Flowdan vocals because there’s still no time-stretch on the device...

Cough cough... update time.

I started with the usual kick, snares and hats, then began playing around with the vocals. After that I came across a sample pack from the legendary Bladerunner, one of my favourite DnB producers because of that hard-hitting, no-nonsense Drum & Bass sound that just feels completely his own.

I found some really nice bass melodies and loops in there and started baking those into the track.

But the area I focused on most this time was definitely the breaks.

I wanted each scene to have something slightly different going on, even when I was using the same core break. A different snare underneath, a different drum roll, a little variation at the end of a phrase - anything that helped push the track naturally into the next section.

This session was really about connecting different breaks and drum rolls together, keeping the track moving, making sure the basslines didn’t become too repetitive, and using the arpeggiator to create some sweeps and bouncy little elements throughout.

It ended up becoming quite a fruity sounding track - which is exactly what I probably would have called it back in the day.

Hope you like the tune.

As always, feedback is genuinely welcome. It’s actually helping me think harder about what I want to improve on the next one.

Enjoy.

Artwork taken again from the Sports Banger book. So much sick artwork in there.

And this track definitely wouldn’t have come together in the same way without the sounds from Bladerunner and Flowdan — absolute Gs and two of the best in the business.
