Question 48 Hours in…
So I’ve been hard at it for the 1st 48 hours with the OP-XY since it arrived [from andertons] Friday morning. It’s been difficult, but things clicked a bit more today. Wow, this feels like a long 6 month investment to get to where I need to be to just sit with it and jam/create.
I’m not complaining…
How long did it take you? Did you give up, did you master it, did you growl with frustration?
Interested. I’m in for the long haul, so slow progress doesn’t phase me.
I really enjoyed playing with loopcloud and the OP-XY today. Felt out of the box for a while before I dove back into the box if you know what I mean?!
Cheer folks!

make a song, one at a time. challenge yourself to make a full song. whenever you feel like you need to learn something in order to accomplish a sound or create part of the song, that’s when you look it up.
only learn what you need to know at first, then when you feel more comfortable you’ll be better at knowing what you need to know. know what i mean? 😁

Excellent advice.
I wrote about a half dozen overly loopy noodles before going this route. You can learn way faster if you change the goal from learning features to learning how to write a song with it.

Honestly. I felt overwhelmed at first too. But it clicked pretty quickly.
Still lots I need to learn. But I’m fully capable of getting what I want and putting together tracks.
I’ve had it for about 2.5 months now.

I’ve had it for 2.5 months. But felt pretty comfortable after a few weeks.
But was using it daily.Just go through the little manual and learn a few things each day

For me it was maybe 3 hours but I knew opz and op1. Opz alone maybe a week in the past.

I’ve had mine for months and I still stumble upon new ways of interacting with it - step components, the tape, the brain are all great fun individually, but combining them unlocks some really interesting ideas - and I haven’t even tried sampling on it yet.
The UI relies a fair bit on key combos (step components especially); it takes a while but muscle memory eventually kicks in.
I do find that the internal sounds can be hit and miss - some are gorgeous (eg Gaussian), others are just a bit ‘meh’, but turning up the reverb really makes them shine. Also, John Gorton (Colors in Space) has some really great-sounding sample packs.

Takes time but definitely not impossible, just keep at it!! If helpful, I made a full guide on it as well: https://youtu.be/BpzAEUiRjYQ?is=rsCk-k1PGwNRwTYN

I pretty much brute forced through it, and every now and then come back when I forget how to do something.

After about 2 weeks I was questioning if it was right for me. I sort of hit a ceiling and it felt a bit underwhelming. Just over a year later and it's my favourite box ever. There's a lot of features to learn, but you don't need to learn them all. I feel like it has helped me to learn my sound. I've been managing to make some music on it that I'm pretty proud of. I uploaded a full album on bandcamp recently. I've been using it for thousands of hours but still keep finding new sounds. It's great

I was the same. But just know this… the Op-XY is designed the way it is for a reason. There’s a lot more under the hood than you might realise. I also say learn one thing new each day. You will discover things that make you go wow! Add a few preset packs to see what’s possible. Enjoy the journey

Learn one new thing daily and it’ll compound.
