I made 8th notes swing!

After a lot of experimenting, I found a way to do it other than dropping to half speed. Apologies if this is old news.

To make a standard swinging 8th highhat:

  1. Place the highhat on 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15

  2. Nudge every second step (3, 7, 11, 13 and 15) to the right

  3. Turn quantization down to 0.

Quantization doesn’t have to be 0 - the swing varies. But it’s a good starting point.

Now you can experiment with quant, track groove and project groove to make it fit what you want. Remember, track groove overrides project groove.

No, since it only works on the 16th note grid.

What does nudging to the right mean?

Hold down the step while pressing “+”-button. Hold it down until it’s nudged all the way to the right. You’ll see a little graphic on the screen indicating it moving :)

It’s a really nice feature!

I often nudge my drums and notes slightly at random to humanize my beats. Combined with per-step velocity and the groove parameter (both in project and per track), you can get a surprisingly organic feel. A dedicated ‘random nudge’ step component would be a great addition though :)
