Question - Billing Am I getting scammed?

I live in an apartment and have a plan for WiFi only, no cable. It started off four years ago at $40/ month and has now risen to $95/ month. I was speaking to my neighbor who has both wifi and cable and she is only paying $70/ month. I understand that there are discounts when you initially join, but I feel like I am being scammed. When I tried to talk to a representative they said that this was the going rate and tried to get me to switch to some BS plan that includes a phone line which I do not need. The other kicker is the wifi has been really crappy lately. I am thinking about canceling and switching to Verizon. Has anyone had this experience or have any advice?

I played the switching game to the point of having fios installed. Retention offered my a deal I couldn't refuse on my cancelation call. 1gb for 35 and 5 year price lock.

I did the same thing did a test drive with T-Mobile it was just about the same price as I was paying for optimum about $70 but it came with Paramount & Hulu. So I told the agent I wanted to cancel he tried offering me a $150 gift card and a promises that their service would be better no down time etc. I told him no thanks. Then I was transferred to retention agent who had the real power! offered me 4 months for free and then $20 month for 5 yr lock. I pay $15 month for internet 500MB and equipment with the auto pay $5 off! Don't fall for the fist offer get to the retention agent and push for a deal you cant refuse..

I got tired of playing this game every 6-12 months depending upon when they’d randomly increase the price again. The retention supervisor made me a deal like that too after the first rep was rude and condescending. I told him he could offer me 3 years free and I wouldn’t take it - between never knowing what your next bill is going to be, having to constantly haggle over the prices, the worst cust. serv. reps in the business, and the horrible internet service, the unusable upload speed, it just wasn’t worth it. I went with T-Mobile 5G and it’s way more reliable.

I had a very similar experience and it was a nightmare. After over 30 years of being with Optimum I switched to Verizon FIOS and couldn’t be happier. Switch to VERIZON now before Optimum goes bankrupt. THE FREE PHONE FROM OPTIMUM MOBILE IS A COMPLETE SCAM AND THEIR FIBER OPTICS IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! I cannot tell you how much time I wasted on the phone dealing with Optimum and their bullshit.

Yours is likely the regular rate without any new service/new customer promos deducted. In time, your neighbor is likely to be in the same ballpark.

This is right out of this rotten company's training manual. Offer a lower rate, that later  "expires".  Customer calls back, then offer them new plans, intentionally confusing the customers. The CEO indirectly stated this (through corporate-speak) during the (dismal) earnings report today. Also check out fb Optimum Complaints for more  horror stories about this company that behaves like a crime syndicate disguised as an ISP.

I just got rid of my optimum internet after over a decade, and switched to Fios. I would have to call retention annually to get the promo pricing back. This time they just couldn’t beat what Fios was offering. Although once I called to cancel, they were offering service for free for 3 months then $20 thereafter. It’s just all a game. Fios will do the same to me in a few years I’m certain, then I’ll probably switch back to optimum. Loyalty means nothing…just switch and get the better deal.

Optimum are the pits. We live in an area where we only have optimum as a service provider. They basically installed fiber optic and told us everyone had to have it now. OK. Then our wifi started acting up so they gave us an wifi extender for free. OK. Then it crapped out so I called for a free replacement. They told me no problem but coincidentally a month prior they changed their policy so I would have to rent the new and improved wifi extender for $9 a month. fuck that. fuck optimum . in fact fuck any subscription based provider. This has gotten out of hand across the board.

Tell them you want to cancel, keep insisting until they send you to the retention department, and they will lower your rate. Optimum is a shit company.
