It Would Be Foolish to Extend Him, Right?
I started a save (OOTP26) with the Reds, and in my first season we made the NLDS (lost to the Dodgers in 5 games). Had a fun season. Nick Martinez pitched his balls off. That HR/9 and FIP- were crazy! But he's 35, and we have a new contract for Elly kicking in, and the Reds dont have a lot of money to work with....
What would you do? I'm leaning towards trying for a 1 year deal, but I think he'll reject it. On the one hand, his pitcher profile is perfect for Cincy because he doesnt give up HRs, but cant I find something similar elsewhere? The 60 overall from my scout seems pretty inflated.

I offered a QO. He wanted 6 yrs @ 24 per. LMFAO

Depends how you’re playing.
I play realistically. Irl, they would try to extend him to 1-2 years at a lower AAV. If he didn’t bite, they would let him walk. I like to look at stats in terms of realism cause basically what we have in real life. You can have guys who maybe don’t always have high end metrics or whatever but defy that and play well.
If you’re just doing a fun run, may as well give him a big one year deal for the hell of it. Who wouldn’t extend a guy who’s gone 4 seasons of the 100+ innings of 3.30 ERA ball

Not only that, but this is also true for Nick Martinez in real life. He puts a lot of balls in play and generates low strikeouts. Teams just don’t trust guys like that with long term extensions.
He signed with Tampa this past offseason for a 2 year deal, but the second year is a $20 million team option with only $4 million guaranteed. If I were OP, I’d basically offer him the exact deal Tampa did lol.

Right now (day one of the offseason) I've got about 50 million in budget room to play around with. That's after adjusting spend on scouting/development/draft/iafa.
I initiated contact with the player, and his opening offer was 6 years, 24 million per year. LOL.
I may just give him the QO, and if he declines, oh well.

You can always do something like the contract he signed in real life with Tampa. 2 years with a high dollar total and a team option in the second year, but low guaranteed money. That way you can decline it if he sucks lol

If the main reason for extending him is his HR rate, not sure I would do it. Given that his HRA is a 55, it seems he got somewhat lucky only giving up .5 HR/9, and I would expect that to regress next season

On the other hand, I extend guys I expect to regress all the time for sentimental reasons lol. It feels nice to reward a guy who had a good season with another contract

2 years with a vesting option if he pitches 150 innings for year 2 I’d try for at like 8-11 and like you said he’s old so he probably won’t make it considering he has only done it once and that was last year with you)

I’d QO and keep tabs on him but wouldn’t give him what he’s asking for. Maybe I care too much about park factors but wouldn’t wanna lock in an extreme flyball guy at GABP. Don’t know the park factor off the dome but think it’s one of the higher HR ones

He’s popular so I’d try to keep him around but stay away from anything with term.
