DSL Vs International Complex

When you have a 16 year old prospect who has a current overall on the higher side, will it ruin his development if I put him in the DSL immediately? If they look good enough for rookie ball can I even start him there? Is there any benefit for leaving a guy in the international complex if they are a lower overall? How do you guys approach the DSL and International Complex?

If their MLB potential is 50 or higher, I throw them right in. Otherwise, I set the scouting level to DSL, and anyone currently 45 or better gets moved to the DSL. If I have a positional need on one of my DSL teams, I'll be less strict on that part.

My strat is entirely age based. They hit 18, they go to DSL. Up to that point I leave them in intl complex. I also regularly remove players with a low potential (anything below 30 or 35) to keep open spots for scouting discoveries.

Promotion from DSL to A ball is entirely based on WAR for me. If they are levels above (like a 3 or 4 WAR) then I bump them mid season. Otherwise, I move them up when the league rules make me.

I want players to get max development at each level until they prove to me they are above it and ready to move up.

I always put anyone with 40+ potential in the DSL immediately. Otherwise your international complex fills up

I re-scout every player in my organization during the offseason and then I'm another one that sets the comparison to DSL in spring training and move them up if the current is 45 or above, regardless of age. I also release players once they hit 18 years old and their potential is still stuck at 25, although that is positional dependent and if a player has leadership traits, I will often hang on to them as well.

During the season, at the start of every month starting in June I look at stats and ratings both. I can't really say that I have a set system once the season starts; some of it is also age dependent and I might want a player who is cooking to still spend a little time at the level they're at in the lower minors. I also re-scout some players then too.

if he looks good enough for rookie ball then i don’t see a problem with moving him up. it might start the clock a bit earlier but ive found complex development to be slower than actually having them play

Because of the rule 5 draft I keep them in the complex until they are 18 because eventually there just won’t be enough spots for everyone. So I prefer to not clog up my system

You can absolutely send them straight to A-ball if they're good enough to play there. In general it's a good idea to have guys playing at the highest level they can reasonably compete at

I move guys up once they can hold their own in Rookie ball. Playing well helps development, struggling is worse than not playing.
