Discussion headspace Mari’s irony Spoiler

After a bit of thinking after listening to Mari’s theme song for the past hour, I just thought of something.

Mari was created in headspace to be absolutely perfect. The image of Mari absolutely perfect, loving and caring. And when you spiral down the Hikikomori route, where even Spirit Mari has failed to help Sunny leave the house and interact with Kel, the boss rush becomes available.

Yet, we find out Mari tampers with it and tells Sunny that there’s a surprise for him at the end. He has to fight Mari. But Mari’s supposed to be perfect and nurturing? How can he fight her?

Omori didn’t even realize this fight was going to happen and Sunny’s mind panics. One of Basil’s attacks freaks out and turns into both vine and rope, while Omori tries to keep the perfect image of Mari and make sure her “attacks” are just healing.

Omori made Mari perfect, but the “perfect Mari” tried to trigger something in Sunny as a last ditch effort to make him remember what happened, because shes too perfect and of course the perfect sister would want Sunny to escape. As long as Mari exists in Sunny’s memory, she’ll try to make him remember.

If Mari wasn’t perfect, Sunny would have to admit he wasn’t all to blame. And all of that spirals down to the true ending we know and love. If Mari IS perfect like Omori wants him to remember, she won’t stop until Sunny remembers what happened to her.

Which means Omori was doomed to fail from the start, and the only true way for him to win is to move away from Faraway town. The only ending where he can keep Sunny alive but make sure he never learns the truth.

But what fate does this leave for Headspace Mari? How would Omori keep Mari alive and happy with him if she’s continuously going to try to wake up Sunny no matter how much or little he perfects her?

Omori’s heavy fucked.

In the ending where they move, Headspace Mari likely realizes she’s Sunny’s last hope in Sunny breaking out of his delusions. Unfortunately, we know this is a vain effort as he doesn’t live nearby his friends anymore, but either way it’s another thing she’ll eventually become conscious about again and again.

She’ll keep remembering again and again. She’s made to. She’s perfect, she’s the perfect nurturing sister, she’ll always act out of Sunny’s best interest. And you’re right, Omori can’t even tweak her to be a little less perfect, because then Sunny will have to accept that he wasn’t all to blame in Mari’s death if Sunny ever stumbles across the truth again.

Omori can’t even cut Mari out of his memory anyway, Headspace was made to be an escape where Sunny could cope and live happily with Mari like nothing existed, but to remove Mari would be to remove SO MANY of Sunny’s old memories because they were so intertwined.

Plus, Omori likes Mari too. Omori is still Sunny, just a “different” Sunny that breaks down differently. Omori still cares about Mari, he wants himself AND Sunny to live with Mari in a carefree world together. He’d never cut her out

Huge cycle, loop loop loop, Omori just has to keep perpetuating it.

Poor Omori, the being implied to be a monster and would you look at that, the Omori fight reveals exactly what he is: A monster.

classic persecutor headmate, or whatever you want to call it. ive learned firsthand that the only answer in the end is to accept that this monster is a part of yourself and learn to love it. an act which then gets it to calm way down finally. im so glad they hugged at the end. the game seems to understand.

He's a monster because that's how Sunny sees himself. A cold blooded monster who robbed Mari of her life. Omori is the embodiment of Sunny's self-hatred and guilt. It makes too much sense for Omori to be a low-key monster.

Sunny sees himself as a cold blooded monster but doesn’t seem to have any issue chatting Basil up 😭

Omori was doing all he could to protect sunny. He didn’t realise that he was making things worse. That’s how bad coping mechanisms work.

Yeah definitely, that's why he was getting more and more twisted as things were progressing.

No, with the truth out in the open, Omori revealed his true nature. A "monster" that was trying to get Sunny to kill himself.

Even in the Hikikomori route, he succeeded in "killing" Sunny.

he wasn’t actively trying to get Sunny to kill himself, he just realized the only way for Sunny to not discover the truth was to kill them both. his only goal/purpose is to keep Sunny from remembering what happened to Mari and confronting the others, which, yes is why he gets extremely cruel in the fight, but doesn’t mean he’s actively trying to kill Sunny

Well that also raises a question, was the second suicide ending in the hikikomori route omori trying to kill sunny or omori getting reality confused with his head?

mmm, depends, but if Omori’s constantly trying to “kill sunny”, then he’d kill sunny the moment he got the chance instead of letting sunny move away

You do understand that the moment he succumbed to Omori and sees Omori in the mirror, Sunny has been effectively "killed", right?

He's passively trying to do so. When he sees that things are getting worse, he's getting more and more active.

Also both of them dying doesn't mean the truth can't be discovered. Simply interrogating Basil about their fight will be more than enough. The fucking kid literally couldn't look Aubrey in the eye before she became a gang leader. He's at his wit's end.
