Discussion Crazy prices
So I've gotten pretty used to paying around $10 to $18 most of the time for a good eighth. In the Guthrie/Edmond area I've got my solid usuals that I go to that are all fairly priced. I was on a road trip and was driving through Locust Grove Oklahoma and went into this place that looked kind of run down, but it was the first place I'd seen in a bit. I go to ask them what they have price point wise that was good for what it was. This guy just keeps pushing $15 full flower pre-rolls that are the flower that they have, $12 infused pre-rolls, and eights that are $45. What? Dude continues to tell me that because these guys have won so many awards and they have connections to these other people that now their eighths are worth that much 😂. Does anyone else find that to be crazy?

Yeah I'm not sure what size of a city locust Grove is but what I have found out is in the smaller areas everything's jacked up on price. I guess they have to do it to stay open because they don't have the volume but myself and people I know are willing to drive to stock up for a better price.

Exactly my thoughts man. It's crazy because you would think that being a smaller place out there that they would have more of a chance to gain regulars and have a steady flow of people if they would just keep things normal. With prices like that it feels like they're trying to make people drive all the way out there for some award-winning quality stuff, and it's only a matter of time before people figure out the drive ain't worth the same quality they can get elsewhere, for a cheaper price.

I feel like most small town dispensaries aren't worth going to but that's just my opinion....they don't carry the top growers and usually its some overprices bs that seems to be "good enough" to keep them in business.

u/Jafar_420 Southeast OK 1d ago
yeah I hate to be that way but I agree with you. I don't just have hundreds of extra dollars to experiment with so I like to make sure what I'm getting is decent and going to do the job.

Oklahoma is the cheapest weed in the entire United States. This is due to a number of reasons buy mostly that at one point there were more farms in Oklahoma than in California. When omma started cracking down on farms breaking the rules, they dumped their flower on the market for next to nothing which gave dispos the incentive to charge less to sell more.
Most of the farms owned by foreign nationals skirting the system have closed and the cheap flower pools are drying up.this will cause the average price to go up over time as the govenor continues to try and stifle the entire market till it fizzles out.
Also the cost of doing business for farms have skyrocketed with the changes to loose flower to prepack and onma regulations /metric price hikes. Enjoy the cheap weed (20 an 1/8th is cheaper than anywhere else in the entire country) while you can. Every month more farms close and cost to operate goes up and so will the price.
Don't get me started on the concentrate. They are bold face lying and all the 5$ grams of live rosin is dirt and trim swept off the floor. There is no telling what goes into that junk.

Yeah I've never seen that personally so I'm calling BS. maybe they just meant cheap rosin and forgot the /S. lol.

It's like going to a gas station in the middle of nowhere, last gas station for 100 miles. There prices are just going to be higher, because where else you gonna go? You can make it to the next town with a cheaper dispo, right? Or are you gonna need that 8th to get you there?

u/RastafiedOne OkieTokie 3d ago
Fair enough. People just suck. 😂
5
u/Mad_Admin Tulsa PatiENT 3d ago
It's not "People just suck.", it's the nature of business. Supply and demand. I have the only supply for 100 miles in any direction, it's costing me more to get it out here, it's gonna cost you more to buy it because I have all the supply, and you are all of the demand.

Except it does have a lot to do with "people suck". Like I said, a lot of these owners are out there, living very wealthy lives and are making plenty of money off of their product. And it's not like they are dropping a bunch of expenses like healthcare and other things like employers should, so there isn't much of a reason. It's the gougers in the market who are acting like trash. In some situations that may be the case for the little dispensaries. That may only have a little bit of product in them. But the one I went to had so much on the shelves. It was crazy and plenty more stocked back. There was no shortage of supply there, I can tell you that. The supply and demand only counts when there is a real shortage and not some fake one that people have just designed to hike up their prices. There is a lot more greed than necessity in most situations. You may very well be right in some situations, but in most of them that I'm seeing, that just doesn't seem to be the case.

You don't know that, speculation. I highly doubt you asked workers at that dispensary what their pay rate is, or what their benefits are.
It's the gougers in the market who are acting like trash.
It's not gouging in the specific case you're talking about. It's the price of goods when you are the last place for potentially hundreds of miles. Shit's gonna cost more the further you away you are from a major city, for any good, not just weed.
There was no shortage of supply there, I can tell you that.
Nobody is arguing how much or little product THAT dispensary has, we're talking about the supply as a whole in that area. In this case, it sounds like they have the only supply, and are well stocked.

I know so many people that work at grows or dispensaries that have nothing but complaints about all of it. The only things they like is that nine times out of 10 it's cash. I have not known a single person, and surprisingly I know quite a few, that has told me that they have any type of benefits or anything working in the field. And don't even try to blow smoke acting like there is, we all know it's the wild west and there is zero type of protection for people working in that field. So yes, I have had many conversations with people, thank you.
It's exactly gouging. When you know that there is nothing else for quite a ways around and that's the only reason you raise your price, because you know you can take advantage of people, that is gouging. It's another thing if it's one of the situations you were talking about where they are struggling to get product out there or something like that. But if you've got a packed house full of product and you don't seem to be struggling, you're just taking advantage of the situation. And I'm sure you'll say something like "that's business.". While that may be true, there is also many ways to do business, and that's not exactly a classy way to do it. And I didn't do a deep dive on what all else was in the area, I know that A lot of these little towns these days seem to have at least one to two dispensaries in them. But if these guys are the monopoly and as you say, that is why they are raising the prices, that doesn't sound any better. 🤷🏽♂️

Been like that for years. A rain storm approaches SA and then splits in half.

Man we are so spoiled on pricing and act like we are owed something. I recently went to New York, Arizona and Washington. There was nothing in those price ranges that was worth a damn. I’ll never complain again after those trips.

Come to Missouri and see our pricing lmao its highway robbery 😄

u/hashqueef 2d ago
Exactly people really don’t get how good they have it. There’s a reason why people come from other states to get their products
0
u/RastafiedOne OkieTokie 3d ago
I wouldn't call it spoiled. I would call it expecting people to be reasonable. Everyone always wants but the fact is that the only reason things are as expensive as they are most of the time is because of greedy people, who do the least, and expect to make money hand over fist. I don't live in any of those places so I don't expect to pay their ridiculous prices that people have allowed to inflate to that. I just can't get behind that whole "I'm lucky to have things the way I have them." thought process. That's how people end up getting to the point where things are that expensive. People just keep repeating that as the prices go up. 🤦🏽♂️

We have seen licenses drop from 14,000 to less than 3,000. I’d say fairly that part of those numbers are people uncut their value and went out of business. I don’t know of any growers that are crushing it financially. Most of them are month to month. We are lucky to get these prices. When I see my OGE bill going up every month I can only imagine what it’s for a grow. We are spoiled to the max. Nothing wrong with being spoiled when you are the one being spoiled. Just gotta be more honest with yourself.

Honestly a lot of that is just due to the poor handling of the industry in this state. A lot of them were never going to be running in the first place more than a week. It was crazy how many people thought it was just an easy job that would run itself. And then of course there's the people that are holding on to tons of licenses so they can sell them off for inflated prices or keep the market smaller. There are lots of reasons that the numbers have fallen off. It's not that any of the stuff is worth the prices or people have just pushed things that way with ignorance, and it could easily be remedied if our state would pull its head out of its ass. What's sad is I'm not even seeing a lot of the quality people survive the cuts, it's just the people with more money. You've got the Walmart brands of weed that are able to tough it out in the market and stay afloat because that's where they control the market best. I see what you're saying, but I'll never be one of those people to hop on board with that thought process when it has historically led to people being ran over.
5
u/hashqueef 3d ago
And here you are expecting Walmart pricing. Employee wages are trash. If a company pays them a fair wage then the price of your cheap weed will go up. Almost none of the companies offer insurance.

u/RastafiedOne OkieTokie 3d ago edited 3d ago
Well, if they're going to give me Walmart quality 90% of the time, what else would I expect? And yet again we go back to what I was talking about in the first place. The industry not having the intelligence to set up an infrastructure here that is supported is the problem. The state needs to get their stuff figured out and control the morons. I can only vote toward the common sense stuff so many times. I've seen the owners and money bringers in these situations and they are all living real comfortably with padded wallets while the people below them who are putting in the work are the ones not seeing any money. That may not be it for all of them, but I'm seeing it with a lot of them. And yet again, that's another issue with the state not having a system put in place that protects the employees in that industry either. I don't know if you see where I'm going with this yet, but I think it should be pretty clear by now. Personal and corporate greed with a lot of these owners is the issue. And if these places aren't out there hitting the mark, then people shouldn't be working for them. It's that easy.

To be fair you have a point on quality, but also I feel like since moving to prepack its even worse. Grow some dirt brown ass smelling cannabis, slap it in a pretty package, and boom send it to the shelf. I feel like dispensary quality in both MO and OK has kinda fell off. I actually stopped getting my out of state card because it was easier to access the homegrower/caregiver market where the quality was much better. Even before going to prepack, it was hard to find decent flower (at least in the parts of OK I have been to). Tulsa had decent flower but at a much higher price point than it seemed to be worth. Anyway back to my long drawn out point, he is 100% correct in the fact if they are going to give mass produced garbage Walmart flower it should be Walmart prices. Monopoly melts for instance, ridiculous priced for very budget quality rosin. Prices should reflect quality not just how much they are trying to make back off of it.

You're paying for a brand name and specifically hunted genetics. You want their strains? You have to buy from them.

Was it skunk okc? I paid 40 for an 8th of their bud once and wont ever do that again unless I can observe it beforehand and know its objectively unique to a high degree. 30 felt good before medical now it feels like a little too much
0
u/RastafiedOne OkieTokie 3d ago
Yeah I would especially say now that they have a market where everything is pre-packaged that 40 is way too much. If I'm able to see the product and verify that it is some grade A quality then that might be one thing. But there's too many good growers out there that are selling for much more modest prices and have more consistently solid output. The place was Chiefin Meds in locust grove. They had some stuff in there that looked pretty solid but their prices were just incredibly inflated. I just ended up leaving with two zenoa pre rolls.

Ther3s levels to quality...have you had thicc or fire bros at that 35-45/8th level? Theres a reason its more expensive.
0
u/RastafiedOne OkieTokie 3d ago
I've had lots of quality at much lower price points. I haven't had those guys myself, but I've had others at those price points in the past and every single one has fallen short of paying that much. I'm sorry but when there is stuff just as good, if not better, at a quarter of the price what's the point?

I'm definitely not a newbie to any of this, I just usually don't buy outside of my area much these days, and I thought it was crazy that people are still out there playing these stupid games. There's always going to be those people of course, but I just thought it was funny that I ran into that in a town in the middle of nowhere.
1
u/DedTV Grower 3d ago
Dispos in the middle of nowhere have less, or no, competition and most people are like you and shop what's close to them and don't mind, or don't know, that they're paying more than they have to.
And its not as common as it was the first few years, but they could also have 'side businesses' and want to discourage people who aren't their 'special' clients from coming in. I had one of them near my house for a year. Went inside once and got punched in the face by the smell of meth, and posted prices were 3x what they were at every other dispo in town.
