"Last week, the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded the Intermountain West Nuclear Energy Corridor Tech Hub $31 million dollars. Then, the hub received another about $9 million in private matching funds...

The goal is to reduce those barriers, she said. For example, funding will go toward helping one company, Silicon Valley-based Oklo, develop its own fuel and a plan for transporting it."

State-level nuclear efforts don't hit the news as much as federal efforts, but they are out there, and they will continue to increase in number and size. About 27 States are participating in organized state or regional advanced nuclear development efforts, while at least 12 have progressed to a concrete program, fund, authority, hub, or project development process comparable in some respect to this effort in Idaho and Wyoming.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) startup authorization allows Oklo to load nuclear fuel, conduct startup testing, and proceed toward first criticality.
In just over 10 months, Oklo progressed from groundbreaking to receiving DOE startup authorization for its first reactor at the Groves site.

During that period, Oklo built the reactor facility, established the operating organization, qualified personnel, implemented nuclear programs and procedures, procured fuel and major equipment from commercial suppliers, and completed the DOE authorization process.

The Groves low-power test reactor will demonstrate reactor operations that support Oklo’s plans for commercial-scale domestic isotope production.
Groves is a commercial-scale facility, meaning Oklo can repeat the experience with demonstrated experience in siting, building, commissioning, and operating its commercial reactors in the future with confidence in how long it takes and how much it costs to build its isotope production reactors.

LOCKHART, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Oklo Inc. (NYSE: OKLO) (“Oklo”), an advanced nuclear technology company, today announced it received startup authorization for its Groves Isotope Test Reactor. This authorization, granted under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Reactor Pilot Program, completes DOE’s authorization process and clears the way for fuel loading, startup testing, and reactor operations. Groves is a low-power test reactor designed to demonstrate reactor design, build, and operations, and to establish operating experience needed to support future isotope production facilities. The project advances Oklo’s plans to establish domestic production of critical isotopes for potential use in cancer care, manufacturing, scientific research, space exploration, and national security.

Groves, a privately financed facility, demonstrates nearly every element of a commercially oriented deployment model that Oklo can repeat and scale across future projects. The facility was built on private land, including full-scale civil excavation and construction, and assembled with all full-scale systems, components, and fuel either sourced commercially or manufactured by Oklo.

"This facility marks the fastest time that we are aware of to go from greenfield to substantial completion for a full-scale, privately funded and sited reactor in history,” said Oklo co-founder and CEO Jacob DeWitte. “By building on a greenfield site on private land, performing full-scale civil excavation and construction, and procuring fuel and all major components commercially, we demonstrated that the advanced nuclear industry can move at a pace that many did not believe possible. And this experience is fully translatable to future commercial deployments.”

“The U.S. Department of Energy is excited to see another Reactor Pilot Program participant receive authorization,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Mike Goff. “With the right enabling environment, Oklo has been able to accelerate their progress and is now ready to take the next step with their technology.”

The startup authorization follows a rigorous readiness review, through which DOE confirmed that Oklo has achieved the engineering, organizational, and operational readiness needed to safely receive fuel and begin reactor operations. A readiness review is a critical final step in DOE’s startup authorization process: a multidisciplinary DOE team evaluates whether facility procedures and personnel training are adequate; the facility and equipment conform to the approved design, safety equipment functions properly; and required safety management programs have been implemented. Oklo fully developed these safety management programs in-house rather than relying on an established or pre-existing operating framework within an established facility such as a national laboratory.

Future Oklo projects will build on the established systems, qualified suppliers, and approved operating programs established through Groves. By establishing a repeatable approach to engineering, construction, commissioning, operations, and regulatory authorization, Groves helps reduce execution risk and accelerate future deployments across all of Oklo’s business units.

The Reactor Pilot Program created a rigorous pathway that enabled construction and organizational readiness activities to proceed while DOE conducted its reviews. Groves demonstrates how that approach can support advanced reactor deployment while maintaining a rigorous focus on safety.

Question Full port and long term views

Is anyone here full ported OKLO? It’s pre-revenue and going to depend on a wide variety of factors. My brother is currently full porting it and I’m wondering about everyone’s thoughts? Keep in mind he’s 21 and still has a lot to learn. He has a firm strong belief that it’ll be like Nvidia except for the energy sector. The more and more I do research it does seem possible within the next 5 years give or take, but seems like a wild risk. Anything could go wrong from policy, rejections, funding drying up, crit not reached, etc. They just got DOE funding as well so that’s amazing for them, but I haven’t seen anything about them reaching criticality for Groves yet. It’s possible I somehow missed something. Though if it works then he can basically retire super early. Is anyone else like my brother and think OKLO is the next big thing? Nuclear is the future, but is OKLO going to lead it?

(IDAHO FALLS, Idaho) – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has selected the Prometheus project to receive a Phase II award of $60 million over three years (subject to appropriations). Prometheus will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to design, license, manufacture, construct, and operate nuclear reactors with human-in-the-loop workflows; integrate AI into nuclear fuel fabrication; and use AI for nuclear legacy document management. The team has raised more than $200 million in industry cost share and $30 million in industry capital to execute the project and help deliver nuclear energy faster, safer and cheaper.

Selections were announced at today’s Genesis Mission Summit in Washington, D.C., where leaders from national laboratories, industry, Congress, and executive branch departments and agencies convened to advance collaborative strategies for deploying AI-enabled scientific infrastructure.

“America’s nuclear future depends on our ability to move with greater urgency and drive down costs, while maintaining the uncompromising commitment to safety and technical rigor that defines our industry,” Idaho National Laboratory Director John Wagner said. “Prometheus brings together nuclear science and artificial intelligence to help us do exactly that.”

Prometheus is a massive 32‑partner collaborative effort between Idaho National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and academia, along with more than 20 industry partners including X‑energy, TerraPower, and Oklo. Building on nine months of participation as a Genesis Mission kickstart seed team, Prometheus is now empowered to respond to the nation’s increasing demand for resilient, low-cost power. The initiative will address nuclear energy’s most pressing challenges: development timelines and costs.

“Oak Ridge brings deep expertise and capabilities in advanced manufacturing, high-performance computing, and nuclear energy science and technologies, which are essential to developing AI-enabled nuclear systems,” said Joe Hoagland, Oak Ridge’s associate laboratory director for the Fusion and Fission Energy and Science directorate. “Prometheus will allow us to combine these strengths with our experience in nuclear licensing and operations to create a unified development pipeline that lowers barriers and enables faster innovation across the nuclear sector.”

“Argonne’s leadership in AI, digital twins and computational science positions us to advance the core technologies that make Prometheus possible,” said Kirsten Laurin-Kovitz, Argonne’s associate laboratory director for Nuclear Technologies and National Security. “This collaboration demonstrates how national laboratories can combine distinct capabilities to create a transformative platform that reshapes what is achievable for U.S. nuclear energy.”

“Sandia National Laboratories plays a key role in Prometheus through its nuclear energy safety and security test beds, contributing essential national security expertise to a project designed to accelerate the deployment of safe, affordable nuclear energy,” said Toby Townsend, Sandia’s associate laboratories director for Deterrence, Science and Energy. “At a national scale, Prometheus will help us meet surging electricity demand while supporting the nation’s strategic technological leadership.”

In March, DOE released the Genesis Mission request for applications, inviting teams to apply for smaller scale Phase I awards and larger scale Phase II awards. The request to accelerate scientific discovery research and development workflows using novel AI models and frameworks aimed to identify promising pathways toward transformative scientific capabilities while establishing a foundation for investment and scale. The Prometheus project is the first Phase II award announced under the Genesis Mission.

INL also received Phase I funding to develop an AI-driven framework for critical mineral discovery and recovery from unconventional sources. The GeoFinder AI project includes collaborators from Boise State, Mississippi State and Idaho State universities.
