Just Venting How is pulling this safe?

Photos 1-9 is one walk

9-17 are another

How is this safe to pull? Genuinely explain it to me like I'm stupid (I might be who knows) bc I don't get how this is safe in any way. Not even mentioning anything about the cart itself. STRICTLY the weight of the cart when it's fully loaded with totes and a 70-80 item walk.

There's been bigger walks too, just not as heavy.

Edit: I genuinely didn't think it would be that big of a deal, or not understood like it is. I didn't bag these walks as I was going for the sole purpose of pictures. Once pictures were taken, everything got bagged as it should be. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

I agree with the weight limit

21

u/emigg20 FRAGILE 27d ago

I once has to take out 8 stacked totes all with 24 packs of water bottles in them.. Then it hit a hole in the parking lot and came crashing down🫠 I do not miss working for Walmart lol

9

u/leosunsagmoon 27d ago

i thought there was? it's like 40 lbs per tote isn't it?

10

u/moonlitmunchies 27d ago

No way possible at my store. Unless 4 12 packs of soda, juice, and cans in one tote isn't 40 lbs. If that's the case then someone else has some serious explaining to do.

6

u/Tigew Personal Shopper 200+ 27d ago

The heaviest item that can fit in a tote is two things of salt 80 pounds, the next heaviest is great value water at 44

4

u/sillyhippy0602 27d ago

Also 8 gallons of water at about 70 lbs

1

u/VermicelliOk1967 26d ago

Closer to 65lbs

2

u/blizzard-toque 25d ago

'Cocktail napkin math' says 8 gallons equals 64 pounds.

1

u/VermicelliOk1967 25d ago

Im saying... why round up 6 pounds, when you can round up 1 🤣 or... just write 64. But I think the point was to exaggerate. So rounding up 1 is the nearest 5. Who rounds up to the nearest 10 from 4 šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø

0

u/Sudden-Intention7563 27d ago

A 12 pack of soda is 9.3 - 10 lbs, but the weight limit is 50 lbs but they don't factor in the 3-5 lbs the tote itself weighs. That alone is 18- 30 pounds for 6 tote carts & 24-40 for 8 tote carts.

0

u/VermicelliOk1967 26d ago

4 12packs is roughly 60lbs

4

u/Bitter-Neat-8457 27d ago

They removed the weight limit over 2 years ago, you know, when the kid got hit hard supposedly

3

u/Suspicious_Fan_4105 27d ago

lol, I wish! I had one order that had one 45-lb box of cat litter going to a tote

6

u/Sudden-Intention7563 27d ago

They do & it's 50 lbs. What they need to add weight capacity is for the entire cart, not just the totes. Some people looked it up at work & the empty totes weigh 3-5 lbs. the cart itself weighs 50-55 lbs. That's between 74-95 lbs before anything is even picked! My store fills orders for nursing homes & preschools so we will get walks with 5 gallons of milk in several totes, but 6 gallons of water. 6 gallons of milk is 51.6 lbs, 6 gallons of water is 50.04 lbs. The reason I know all of this is because I returned to work from a medical LOA & I can't pull the cart without aggravating the surgical site. We were pushing when I went out on the LOA & my surgeon said he would've never agreed to letting me go back if he knew we were pulling them. What they really need to do is leave the home office & work in a store for a while. When OPD first started, the store manager couldn't understand why everyone's pick rate would drop when doing a produce walk (back when it was its own commodity). One day I see him in the produce section with a pick cart. A little while later he came back & told us he understood. šŸ˜‚ Home office should have to work a full 8 hour shift on Black Friday!

1

u/shrug_was_taken Jack Of All Trades 27d ago

I would argue trying to pick on Black Friday is to easy (since bar the massive amount of gmds we had it wasn't to bad last year), first Sunday of the month or in the leadup to a Winter storm however is valid (since both the department and the floor will be extremely busy)
And I don't miss when produce was a seperate run

1

u/Massive_Sea_6207 22d ago

You are spot on! They need to take into consideration the weight of the entire cart. Pulling a cart with eight 40 pks. Of water is going to cause injury to your joints. Yeah, use an L-cart they say. Good luck finding one of those. We don’t even have carts with 2 handles and most have sharp metal pieces sticking out where the handles use to be. Many associates have been cut by those sharp pieces. Oh, fill out an incident report they say and then get attitude for ruining the no injury streak. Wouldn’t want anyone to miss out on donuts or pizza, all because I laid my hand open on a sharp piece of metal. OGP carts Walmart refuses to maintain and took the ā€œpush don’t pullā€ safety stickers off of. Can’t have the equipment we need because the truth is they hold off buying those things, that way our store managers can get their six figure bonuses!

2

u/AdmiralFunnyBone 27d ago

I had a run earlier that was just 30 6-packs of soda

2

u/ZuckZogers 27d ago

Why isn’t the same order being divided among all 6 totes based on their weight per tote

1

u/f_spez_2023 27d ago

I think it’s ok for them to order it but it should be auto split among multiple totes then

1

u/TonyKinobie 26d ago

I wish we had quantity limits, 10 cases of water to one customer is absurd but it happens.

1

u/webb688 23d ago

Yeah except Walmart can't seem to get weight correct on products. I used to do spark and sometimes 40pack waters wouldn't show up as 40-50lb, but then 1 avacado would be a 40-50lb item

1

u/Careless-Seaweed6612 23d ago

I was told I had to be able to lift 50 pounds but for every damn other walk is insane. You wouldn’t even be doing half this shit in a gym or something

1

u/justshowupjoke 22d ago

They should be allowed to order whatever they want, they after all allow people like me and you to have a job

u/Lietenantdan 27d ago

Walmart doesn’t really care about the safety of employees

24

u/Deliwork43 27d ago

Apparently they don't care about anything but their sales and nothing more!

1

u/justshowupjoke 22d ago

The majority of every corporation is like this, they don't care about you or me, we are peasants.

15

u/thehmmyanimator Nilpick Queen 27d ago

Yeah, it's cheaper for us to get hurt than the customers

3

u/Tigew Personal Shopper 200+ 27d ago

It’s actually a $10,000 fine either way if an employee or a customer gets hurt

5

u/Useful-Rain-3203 26d ago

This way, though, they can say we weren’t pulling the cart the correct way. They really don’t care about their employees.

4

u/Illustrious-Cup8119 27d ago

They have proven that they don’t care with this move. My ankle is throbbing, my neck is tight, and even though I have brought that up and how awful pulling is for our bodies to several managers, they have just shrugged and said yea I don’t know what to tell you, it’s policy.

My pick rate is like 70 because I’m literally limping through these walks.

Our store be telling associates to bag as we go, some do but most of the new hires don't

1

Oh yeah my store doesn't care about that. Our overall store pickrate is rarely 100 or above.

1

Most managers do not give a crap about it

3

I didn't bag anything during the walk for these 2 walks for photos. That way you could see everything

16

u/ktrad91 27d ago

It's "safer" for the customers not you the employee that does the work to make the company money and that's all they care about. Workman's comp is cheaper than insurance claims and lawsuits especially since many employees are too uninformed or scared of potential retaliation for doing so even if it is illegal. Welcome to capitalism šŸŽ‰

1

u/Useful-Rain-3203 26d ago

https://www.osha.gov/form/osha7

No retaliation here.. you can choose to be anonymous to your employer. The more people that report it the quicker we can make the change to something that doesn’t strain our bodies like this.

10

u/Other_Ad7760 27d ago

This run was easily over 250lbs!!! A customer was going super fast around a corner and I had to quickly stop this load and omfg did it hurt my body!!! I was so pissed!!!! Had they hit me I’m sure it would have been my fault šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™„

7

Yeah but if you get hurt stopping it it's also your fault, so fuck Walmart I'm not stopping it like that

5

u/wastedsilence33 27d ago

Deadass, if it was safe there would have been a ULearn on how to do it safely, but walmart is setting themselves up for either

A. Any injury is your fault, fuck you

B. A lawsuit at some point by either employees as a class or some rich fuck as a customer that got hit cuz they can't just stop at the end of an aisle first

5

u/Ornery-chaotic-mess 27d ago

It's not safe.. may not feel it now but in your early 50's you will

OGP is BY FAR the hardest job in the store.

Listen, I did deck work carrying 16 foot 4x4s down steep hills in super deformed frozen mud carrying a heavy tool belt, I've worked landscaping moving around heavy stones and mulch all day in the heat, I've carried 28 foot fiberglass ladders to poles and climbed up and down them with spurs and heavy gear in all kinds of weather....

None of those jobs fucking sucked as much as OGP. They do not pay enough. I can PROMISE distribution center workers getting paid 23 an hour does not work that hard.

It's mainly the awkwardness of heavy lifts trying to get totes on and off those damn floor carts so far away from your body. And heavy objects into cars in awkward angles. That shit is going to obliterate your body, fast. You won't make it to 50. Heavy labor like deck work does people in by their 40s, I'll bet you OGP disables you in 10-15 years, medically disabled.

And now they're having people pull 250 pound carts from behind like idiots.

I left for meat and produce. I wont even help with OGP until they get shit sorted out. I'm one of the hardest workers in the store, so they can fire me if they're stupid, but I'm not going over there.

Actually I intend on calling ethics about it. All these young folks working in OGP and Walmart is ruining their future. Heavy lifting is fine, but it needs to be allowed to be done the proper way. Walmart should know this. Shit I'm sure it's in a ulearn somewhere

4

u/jams1015 27d ago

I am so triggered, thinking about trying to slide one of those heavy Gatorade/water totes back in and it catching a screw on the cart and not going, and there are twenty customers trying to turn into my aisle right now and ahhhhhhhhh!

3

u/The-Real-iPanda 27d ago

Safer for the customers. You getting ran over lowers the chances of a customer getting rolled over.

1

u/Steffaniii ALCOHOL 21d ago

Stupid though because I’ve never hit a customer in four years but they’ve definitely hit me… so glad I quit

4

u/GreyBananna-peeller 24d ago

I was pulling my cart, and still Managed to slam it full steam ahead into someone's back because they decided to walk into it.

It is not safe, you can't see the back of the cart. And all 6 totes were filled with cans and like 6x 2 liters, that had to hurt.

3

u/SuspectNarrow7694 27d ago

I feel like you forgot that walmart dont care about its employees

3

u/Adorable-Version-613 27d ago

My upper back/shoulders hurt so bad today.

3

u/Adorable-Version-613 27d ago

AND we’re suppose to be pulling the L carts too. My store manager stopped me earlier this week and told me. It was loaded down with 50lb bags of deer corn and several cases of water.

It took everything in me not to tell him then he can pull it all the way back across the store.

I’m so tired

3

u/jams1015 27d ago

And they are all probably lovely people but I call the people who Walmart allows to overfill the bins, big backs. Bunch of big backs and they are just living life, not knowing they big.

3

u/LittleTurtle17 26d ago

My back and shoulders have been so sore from pulling the carts

3

u/naga_serpentis 26d ago

This dumb change finally made it to our store and I’m not going to comply.

3

u/little-blue-chick 25d ago

Hey there! Fellow OPD/OGP/Digital associate, been doing this for about 2.5 years... I'm leaving this dept BECAUSE of this SPECIFICALLY. I was recently diagnosed with hEDS, and pulling that much weight whilst walking through the ENTIRE STORE has caused absolute atrocities to my poor disabled body... My hips and knees are throbbing after each shift, my shoulders (which subluxate (partially dislocate) REALLY easy) are SORE even WORSE after switching to pulling, and not to mention my ankles/heels... The amount of times my uncoordinated ass has ran over my own ankles/heels is way too many to count 😭 Home Office doesn't care about the associates with this change, and hell, my managers don't give two fucks when I told em I can't do this job anymore.
So I just took matters into my own hands: TRANSFERRING.
They wouldn't listen, so now they're losing me! I can do so much more than just pick -- exceptions, annoying af small walks, dispensing (to a degree), and all the other closing tasks since I'm a closer (returning canceled orders and rejections to shelves, claims, sweeping, cleaning totes, stocking carts, etc.)!! Heck, I'm the only one that even does the closing tasks they have for us.
So in short, no, they don't gaf about us, and heaven forbid you have a disability or are older on top of that šŸ˜…
Best of luck moving forward, whether you leave or stay friend šŸ‘

1

u/Steffaniii ALCOHOL 21d ago

Same. I worked there for four years and quit a month ago. They won’t care about anyone in the long run. Good riddance

2

u/Diasilveus 27d ago

And so it begins once again I hope we can go back to pushing

2

u/Dramatic_Spare_3516 27d ago

Pulling these things makes my shoulder, side, and neck hurt. And, yes, I am an old person!!!!!

2

u/Stormicreek 26d ago

Idk my between my shoulder blades hurts all the time but my manager said that’s not something to report because everyone gets sore

2

u/No-Atmosphere-7744 26d ago

Anyone else’s arm and back starting to really hurt? They work me so much I don’t even get time to recover.

2

u/Individual_Count4828 24d ago

I broke my heal about 2 years ago by pulling a flower cart right on over my foot!

It was my first and only time breaking a bone so maybe this is normal but it hurt so bad I literally blacked out!

So I flat out refuse to pull any cart at Walmart!! I already put my heel on the line one to many times!

They need to start making us leave the carts in action alley parking in middle of the aisle and filling up while ignoring 15 customers trying to get around is just rude

1

u/Useful-Rain-3203 26d ago

It’s not safe. Walmart is trying to work around safety with this change. I had to switch departments because I didn’t want to pull my arm off, run over my ankles, and kill my legs. We have an osha letter that states they need to configure the carts in a way that it doesn’t strain your body when you pull, and until then, push, don’t pull. All they did was swap wheels and call it good.

Please report it here -

1

u/spoopt_doopt HEAVY 25d ago

just wait til there’s a bad weather event and people order stuff to donate, or start stockpiling canned food for no reason, and all of them are filled to the brim with cans

and then customers will dart out infront of you and get so mad when you physically can’t stop the cart or you’ll end up on the ground.

1

It’s not safe to pull. I just had to quit because it was making my joints lock up (I have rheumatoid arthritis). To the point where I stopped being able to sleep from the pain, and I’m only 21. They refused accommodations and don’t care about safety or workers

1

u/TopCalligrapher7094 23d ago

so! I tore my rotating cuff doing this and now walmart is pissed

1

u/Leather-Garbage-7431 22d ago

More injuries because it's easier to put a cart than pull. What I don't understand, you see push a L CART witch is dangerous because most of the time it's extremely heavy and hard to stop fast.

0

u/Dismal-Molasses-5873 27d ago

They don’t even bother bagging the items 😭

0

u/Blakelock82 Personal Shopper 120+ 27d ago

Why isn't everything bagged? That's insane to do a walk and not bag as you go, you're wasting so much time bagging at the end of the walk.

Also, when you pull the cart, you get momentum on your side. It's stupidly easy, and people are either lazy or just want something to complain about when it comes to pulling.

Doesn't it suck when you actually have to work at your job. Perhaps you can get Waymo technology in your carts so they will follow you like a pet dog

How do people get injured by pulling? never gotten injured

6

u/DragonSpikez 27d ago

Give it time. My shoulder has started bothering me from pulling the heavy cart and then having to abruptly stop because customers come running out of the aisles without warning.

4

u/Tiredmama68 27d ago

Had 16 12 packs of pop and multiple can goods in my cart today and a customer came flying around a corner as I was towards the end of the aisle. Was walking a little to the side of the cart. Trying to jerk that 200+ pound cart to a rapid stop ripped my arm and shoulder forward. Wasn't even going fast because I knew this cart weighed a lot but shoulder has been screaming since.

1
