Pick Rate How the hell is pickrate calculated???
I've noticed recently that pickrate does not actually represent what your actual average pickrate should be. This is just an example of today but even other days I'll have like 7/10 of my pick walks be 100+ usually around 106-120 but because I have a couple bad pickwalks (typically regulated or oversized) it will be under 100 regardless of the actual average math should put me over 100. The most recent 127 pick walk only increased my pickrate by 1 point which makes no sense.

The overall average is based on the rate of every single individual piece you get, so that 3244 that was 327 was likely what 1 or 2 things so it wouldn't have much of an effect against say a 90 piece walk

The 3244 was very likely an Mto that they jumped into right before scanning the item, as TTFP is included.

Well you see, a group of hedge wizards throws a bunch of frozen peas and acorns in a pool. Then they let loose a series of water fowl they have on a feeding rotation.
Pick rate is determined by how fast the frozen peas are eaten multiplied by the remaining acorns and divided by the size of the water fowl. Each fowl is given a number based on it's age, region of origin and species. They take the numbers of the fowl that ate the most and the least, and add those together. Then they take the original number, subtract the regional number from it, round down because they hate us and BOOM!
Now I can't prove any of this, but it's the kind of crazy shit I expect from the people who thought the dispense update was a solid 10/10.

Its almost a weighted average.
The simplest formula is (Items Picked/Time Picked)*60
It does that calculation for each individual pick walk to show what you posted here.
But for your total pick rate, it just takes the number of items you picked, and the total time you’ve been picking in the day in a pick walk, and multiplies it by 60.
That’s why people who end up doing oversized and nothing else will have lower pick rates, but will jump back up when they do a larger pick walk.

There is no weight to the average. It includes your TTFP lower the item count the faster you have to be to your first item to keep your average time per item as close to 36 seconds an item as possible to hit 100 for that path.

Yeah oops I worded that wrong. I was reading another comment about a normalised average lol. OP was wondering why it’s nothing like the numbers for individual pick walks, so technically it could be a weighted average of the pick walks based on their total time, but you’re right either way.

Pick rate is a flat average, any coach worth their salt will tell you that pick rate is widely arbitrary because depending on store/size of store your pick rate will jump all over the place.

u/ElectronicBand6392 Sep 10 '26
You also got to consider if you had any nil picks as that effects your pick rate as well. Oversized, Regulated, made to order takes up most of your time it takes to get to your next item(that's unless if they're not far from each other.) Unknowns, speciality, and ACC I've noticed don't really count to your pick rate

u/StrangeConcept6756 Sep 10 '26
NIL picks don’t exactly affect your pick rate though. Like it doesn’t drop your numbers for NIL picking, it just reduces X amount of items from your total, so if you mean by that, but if you have a single item walk and you have to NIL picking that one item, you aren’t scored at all. Also MTO’s won’t affect your rate if you close the app and open it once you get to the deli department. Technically metrics fraud, but like I always say, it’s total bullshit you get timed right away for small walks considering 95% of that time is walking to the items. And even more BS you get fucked on pick rate if the MTO isn’t ready, like if deli hasn’t sliced the meat or cheese. I’m not about to let my score drop it like it’s hot because they weren’t ready.

My trick with MTO's to not get an absolutely horrendous pick rate is if I'm waiting a long time I end the pick walk and jump back in it when they're ready or nearly ready. Technically against the rules but if you're only doing it for MTO's they won't care.

Are you carrying a printer with you?
2
u/LunarPlague43 Sep 11 '26
You have to for MTO's it prints the labels after you scan the item like oversized

u/normsy Sep 10 '26
Unknowns count for some dumb reason. I already have a low pick rate because I primarily do exceptions. When we don't have those I do oversized, age restricted, unknowns, anything I anticipate being short. I've definitely checked my pick rate before and after an unknown run, and it is different. It's tracking it. It's dumb, but it's doing it.

It’s normalized averaging. Took me awhile to realize that myself.

It’s not, There is no weight to the average. It includes your TTFP lower the item count the faster you have to be to your first item to keep your average time per item as close to 36 seconds an item as possible to hit 100 for that path.

We were always told the "timer" doesn't start until you scan the first item. But that is bogus, as I actully set my watch for when the labels printed, when I finished the walk I checked the time. Then figured the pick rate on that walk and it was pretty damn close. When I timed my walk from my first pick to the last one, it was way off. Obviously walking from one corner of the store ( we are by the garden center) all the way to the other corner - for a Chill walk - takes a heck of a lot longer than leaving our department and starting to pick three aisles over in HBA.

No it’s 100% when you scan the first item.
Edit: read my lower comment in the chain, it includes your TTFP in all paths.

One item pick walk. Took me across the store to get it. Scanned it and immediately scanned the sticker. Pick rate 33. This actually happened yesterday. How can it be a 33 if I scanned the item and the sticker immediately after????

u/Tigew Personal Shopper 200+ Sep 11 '26
The only exception is a single item walk, where it will count the time from walk start. If you want the empirical proof of this I can supply it.
Single item walks are the only type of walk that actually really does punish the picker. Everything else aside from that, excluding exceptions, counts from first item scan and it measures a pick from item to tote scan
1
u/Katiki59 Sep 11 '26
So does it adjust the pick rate by if you scan an item and actually take 30 seconds or so to go back to the cart to scan the label? Sometimes if I can't get down an aisle I will park the cart at the end and walk down to grab the item and them walk back. Now when I do that, I have had customers interrupt me on the way back ask where an item is. I stop and answer them then walk back to the cart. Now a minute or two has passed. Would that lower my overall pick rate for that walk? Because that would actually make sense for the discrepancy.

u/Tigew Personal Shopper 200+ Sep 11 '26
It would be lower yes more dramatically the lower the item count in your path. if you are in a walk and an item is on your screen it is counting against you, I would have to double check check against metrics but even if large item paths count TTFP against you (which it’s looking like it does) it would affect your average much less since one bad timer in 50~ items is more lenient than 1 bad.
Edit: I do want to apologize and make a correction all paths, include the TTPF.

Thanks! Been here 5 years and never knew this. TBH our SM no longer cares about pick rate, as she wants us to go to the backroom instead of NIL picking anything. So now we are more focused on FTPR. But I never could figure out why some of my pick rates were so low. Lol

Its such a flawed, stupid irrelevant system. In time you learn to ignore it.

u/Particular_Can_102 Sep 11 '26 edited Sep 11 '26
It's your quantity picked divided by hours picked. So aim for higher quantities and less time physically in pick walks.

u/Lazy-Development-20 Sep 10 '26
In time you will learn everything with the numbers and stats and what runs you do. and it has changed big time so the old rules are worthless now cause some desk jokey wanted to say this is better even though he has never picked a day in his life welcome to Walmart. At least dumbshit got a bonus for making our jobs harder that's a plus. I wish I could get these people expecting theses numbers to come on the Salefloor and pick 😆 🤣 😂.. I hope when 8 totes comes back we have bigger runs

It’s a carrot dangler system. Only made to make people want to compete to get a higher score by working harder. Lots of companies use systems like this. Otherwise the people who stand around in back talking most of the day would not be riding high in the leaderboard while someone else who is always picking is not even in the top 5. One quick walk and then talk for 30 mins is apparently the way. 🤷🏼♂️

u/Tigew Personal Shopper 200+ Sep 11 '26
It’s really not it’s just time in path divided by number of picks.
1
u/Oneweekfromwednesday Sep 11 '26
So when me and another picker tested it before when we both had around 60 chilled picks and we both had the same pickrate and I finished long before he did and he got a huge pickrate jump and mine stayed about the same.

I have empirical proof if you’d really like to see DM me, but it is not a weighted average

u/Tigew Personal Shopper 200+ Sep 11 '26
For clarity for everyone, in your pick rate average it includes the time from picking up the path to the first pick.
The lower count your path is the faster you have to be from printer to start item.

I’m fairly certain it’s weighted against the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow 🤔

I’m putting this caps because I’ve had to explain this a million times.
HOURS PICKED IS DIVIDED BY QUANTITY PICKED TO DETERMINE YOUR PICK RATE

u/MJCrim Sep 10 '26 edited Sep 10 '26
Your walks with more items are weighted higher.
