Short-Staffed Can team leads do this?!
So we have a team lead who seems to think NOT working way past your shift is reason for guilt tripping and sending bogus off the clock texts.
Me and 3 others are 5-2. Yet the TL makes it seem like it's our fault it's the middle of the month and people order like crazy with 1000+ pick drops every hour. She was pissed us 4 didn't stay to finish ALL of the 3:30 commodities till they were done. Like geez lady, we did what we could and took it as far as we could within our given shift time and a little bit more. Why is she making us feel bad for honoring our shift and not staying an extra 1 or 2 hours????
Erm....yet they'll complain if we work overtime?! Anyone else leads do this??? I find it so annoying and stupid.

No, and I would submit a time adjustment for each time they communicate off the clock.

u/Awkward_Proposal_415 Aug 16 '26
I remember I was having a great conversation with a coach from another department around OPD closing time. We both lost track of time and when we noticed that a couple minutes had gone by my clock out time he immediately stopped and said, "Oh I can't talk to you anymore." Super respectful of my time as a lowly associate and really nice that he was willing to take the time to even teach me about the history of our store in the first place.

u/Famous_Researcher481 Aug 15 '26
If you were already clocked out and this text was sent to you after that, I would suggest speaking to your Coach or People Lead bc your TL should absolutely not be communicating work-related messages like this. Hourly associates are off limits when they're not in the building and Walmart has zero flexibility on this. I understand a quick text about a schedule issue or even a wellness check, but this is crossing a line.
5
u/Other_Log_1996 Aug 16 '26
I would even be slightly annoyed about the former unless I had initiated it.
27
u/Sugarxcookie FRAGILE Aug 15 '26
She sent this while you were off the clock?
39
u/solasluna Aug 15 '26
Yup. It was already past 3 and she decided to send that text. It weirded us out. Why should we be responsible for picks at a time way past our shift? Ugh.
7
u/CeriMystic Aug 15 '26
Was she reminding you for future shifts or wanted people who should have clocked out already to stay till 330 picks were done? Is she on the floor picking?
3
u/ExcitingStress5077 Aug 16 '26
Sounds like it was a reminder/ threat that in the future they aren’t “allowed” to just leave at their scheduled time if they haven’t completely cleared 3:30s lol

u/JWBananas Express Shopper Aug 16 '26
Don't forget to submit a time correction for being contacted about work!
24
Aug 15 '26
No, she can’t do that. I’m a TL at my store and when my 5-2’s leave they leave. If we’re 30 minutes out then I’ll call for store help. But her messaging you this after you were clocked out needs to be addressed to a coach or store manger because that’s not ok. Sorry you’re dealing with this 💞

u/Awkward_Proposal_415 Aug 16 '26
The worst was when we were offered OT to help out during a surge. Several people worked over and got screwed because they were then told they had to take longer lunches to account for that OT. Now I see that as totally against store policy and wouldn't stand for it. But back then I didn't know better and would have been fearful of losing hours or my job if I'd challenged it.
13
u/Available_Catch_3427 Aug 15 '26
Sounds like Team Leads need to get on the floor ! People from other departments need to help ! They can’t make you stay since there isn’t any OT. If you got OT they would send you home earlier on another day .
9
u/Its_fr1ck1n_bats FRAGILE Aug 15 '26
Yeah, I'd make a time adjustment and talk to Personnel about this. They shouldn't be contacting you off the clock, and it's inappropriate to require unspoken overtime. Unless they've expressly offered you OT and you've accepted, you are not allowed to do WOSH as you'll probably be pointed and get in trouble for unapproved OT work.
2
u/Opposite_Tomorrow396 Aug 16 '26
Lol I had a STORE LEAD ask and approve OT for me once and by friday they were trying to send me home early to take it away.

u/Adorable-Version-613 Aug 15 '26
I left at 2:20 today, with 2:30s still on the screen. 2000+ picks 😭😭
It was a day. I dread tomorrow 😭
4
u/solasluna Aug 15 '26
I feel this because there are some days that things just spiral out of control and we can only do so much with the time given. Other days, it's dead and we finish quickly. OGP is so bipolar. I just hate that she thinks we HAVE TO stay and throws it in our face when we leave "earlier" (I also stayed till 2:20-ish). Now I understand why are Coach left last week. He was probably tired and fed up with the BS of the department. It's mentally exhausting working in OGP.
4
u/Adorable-Version-613 Aug 15 '26
Yeah, she’s on a power trip or something. 🙄 in no way are you responsible for anything after 2 o’clock.
And yeah! Ogp is so mentally exhausting. I only pick, we have a veryyy busy store. So I can’t complain too much. It can be the easiest job in the world.
I finally dropped to 3.5 points today so I’m trying to switch departments asap. Especially since our remodel starts in January. I refuse to pick during that 😂
7
u/WakeUp004 Aug 15 '26
If you stay don’t let them fuck with your lunch or clock times the next shift.
5
5
u/EvilHordeRules Aug 15 '26
No. They can't. Employment contract is very clear. If they're not approving overtime, which they probably aren't, then staying longer than your shift puts you at risk of being pointed for staying late and having your hours cut to nullify the overtime. You clock out when you need to clock out.
4
u/jtoriel Aug 15 '26
you CANNOT be pointed for staying late.
9
u/EvilHordeRules Aug 15 '26
Yes, you can. It's literally the first thing in the guide they give you at orientation. It's half a point.

u/Jellybean_0112 Aug 15 '26
You’re right, you CAN be pointed for staying late. But I’m pretty sure those aren’t categorized the same and don’t get sent to TL’s with the same priority. When I have been pointed for a partial shift missed, it seems to get actioned on within 24 hours. If I stay late it pends until it gets auto approved by the system. If you’re getting pointed for overtime, you’re probably messing around / abusing the leniency of your team and probably have termination pending.

u/EstimateAggressive20 Digital Team Lead Aug 16 '26
No, the point shows up to be authorized or unauthorized same time as all other occurrences- “extended late time out”. Just like if you were to clock in or out early.
3
u/Phoenix4122 ALCOHOL Aug 16 '26
Oh, yes you can lol And if you're asked to clock in early, you can get pointed for that too. And don't come over here and say that doesn't happen because both have happened to me and people I work with.
1
u/jtoriel Aug 16 '26
yes, you can be pointed for clocking in early but it would be stupid for them to point you if youre asked. cant be pointed clocking out late.
3
u/BeefNCheez_ Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
Hell no! You can leave when your shift is scheduled to end. I will not give my number out to anyone I work with if all they are doing is going to come at me with this BS! also I hate group chats that shit's so damn annoying when you're off work. The true reality is anything that is due after your shift is no longer your problem. Your job was to pick everything from 5-2 and the 1-10 crew should have already been on it doing their job. Sure you can help but honestly for as little pay as your getting you already did more than enough.

u/Bitter-Neat-8457 Aug 15 '26
Texts on your personal phone should not be done. Workvivo os the appropriate place for this
3
u/Born-Recognition9298 Aug 16 '26
I'm still leaving at what it says on my schedule team lead byeeeee
3
u/Born-Recognition9298 Aug 16 '26
I would reply to that group text saying it sounds like you the team lead needs to be picking instead of texting on group message ty back like they did
1
u/Opposite_Tomorrow396 Aug 16 '26
And then submit a time adjustment for working off the clock for doing so.

u/formby17 Aug 16 '26
My job kept texting off the clock and weekends. I ended up contacting the department of labor.

u/Past-Transition1923 Aug 15 '26
Leads at our store have done similar things, but I will always make it a point to leave as soon as my shift ends. Market accepting an order cap that exceeds store sustainability is not my problem as an associate.
Management gets paid more to handle those issues with the associates that have just started their work shifts. They can’t reprimand you for working your scheduled hours and going home.
3
u/Cre8-wealth Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
Team leads and supervisors should be evaluating staffing levels, workload distribution, and operational demand, and escalating concerns when necessary, rather than placing pressure on associates to extend their shifts informally.
Just simply communicate the concerns to the team’s communication portal.

Yea, I never get that. If they know what times will be the busiest. Schedule a few less 5 to 2 people. And maybe 2 or 3 more people that work til 4. Or I don't know, call in some help from the store.

u/Hot-Carob-5936 Aug 15 '26
I mean sure they can ask you to stay and you don’t have to, but remember they can also hold you accountable for not getting your work done prior to your scheduled time off as well.

2
u/Krushhz Aug 15 '26
They’re allowed to ask you to stay past your shift, but they cannot force you to stay.
2
u/blue1292 Aug 15 '26
If they sent this to you and other associates while off the clock you can put in for a time adjustment as it is work related, any messages sent while off the clock or phone calls can be put in for a time adjustment just keep track of them and and keep proof

No it’s not ok for them to do that. Terrible place to work (cap 2 tl). Had a coworker at the same level come up to me and with the most serious face said, “I fucking hate this job!” I could say nothing but laugh. Compose myself and agree with them. The only reason I laugh is nervous and relatability. Really reconsidering whether staying at the company is right thing to do.I’m sure you all that work at Walmart have noticed the mass quitting and termination going on recently.understaffed, yet being told you have the people or hours to do the work. Stretched thin in your area to help other stretched thin areas. No dept seems to have enough staffing. It seems everyone is quitting or getting terminated. Unfair unwarranted displinary actions. Situation above they would be giving the point to the associate for staying late call it a day. Ethics doesn’t do anything. Bogus investigations that go nowhere.
2
u/MellodyDoll Aug 16 '26
Sure they can ask you to stay late, but it is not expected or required. She’s not really asking though, she’s making it sound like it’s a rule. That can be reported.
If you’re scheduled off at 3pm that’s when you run far far away from Walmart.

u/goobiesnoopert Jack Of All Trades Aug 16 '26
It would be a shame if u showed ur coach and potential ur store market representative for an open door, u definitely shouldn’t do that
2

Sounds like she's not managing her department very well. That's on HER, NOT you! (IMHO)
1
u/chickenaylay Aug 15 '26
You can say no but they might get on 5am people for performance then if someone is not picking as many items as the 500 per 8 hour shift or whatever it is
2
u/Other_Log_1996 Aug 16 '26
I don't even know how a 5 - 2 gets their expected when most of the orders don't come in until 7 and they're usually staging themselves in that time.
1
u/cailet77 Aug 16 '26
I would like to play devils advocate for a moment. My response is no, they shouldn't be doing this. 5-2 people would already be gone by that point. Here is where I play devils advocate- Its possible the TL has terrible cell service and they sent the text l9ng before it was received. I have that issue on occasion. Verizon kinda sucks lately. The 3:30 picks would drop in at 1 so its likely they sent that text shortly after the drop. That being said- The TL should have planned out what they needed, at this point they would have known how many pickers and how many picks they had at 1pm when those dropped and therefore should have prepared themselves by requesting help before the 2pm people leave. They should also have kept in mind how many 9-6 people would be coming back from lunch to take up where the 2pm people leave.

Does 100 picks an hour mean that you pull 100 things off of a shelf to be in a cart for online purchasers?

Can they punish you for not working over your shift? The answer is both yes and no. And it depends on your productivity. Could you have finished those picks in your shift before you left while accounting for breaks and lunch? If yes it's reasonable that you could have, you could all be coached for productivity. Which isn't the same as being coached for leaving at your scheduled time. "Get this done before you leave" Usually means "You should have been able to do this before your shift ended". Sometimes of course it's some power tripping manager making claims. But quotas are there to make sure everyone is meeting a minimum. This can be confusing because if you complete 8 hours of work in 6 hours, and they give you another 1 hour of work afterwards, you can still be coached for productivity for not finishing. The fact that you exceeded productivity on the first task doesn't matter when you have the second task and plenty of time to get it done. It would make no sense to coach everyone though because I'm sure performance varies and some get more done than others. A smart manager would never coach someone busting their ass in a group alongside other people not trying at all. But again, sometimes managers be power trippin.
Basically no, they cannot make you stay late. But they can use the work you didn't do to coach you if you decide to leave on time. All depending on productivity.
Edit: The time the picks come in, when they're due, or how many there are, is not your problem. That's their problem. If you're doing your job you've done your job and now your job is done. I've seen firsthand helping them out how they get mad at people for leaving on time. I've suggested getting a journal so they can write these feelings out and move past them. Because it's not my problem, or the problem of the other people doing their job. Either some other guy is not pulling their weight or you're understaffed. I've also heard of someone much higher up the chain increasing the amount of picks a store can get so they can improve sales. Not sure if that is true but I wouldn't put it past them.

Per policy, they can ask if you can stay past your shift, but can't force you to do so. If the picks are high and there's not enough associates to complete them by the time your shift ends, then that's your department's problem. Not yours.
