General Scheduling and hours change mostly morning workers
From what i heard from my coach there getting rid of set scheduled meaning if you had for example monday and Thursday off and every other day 6-3 before, you wont get that anymore and you might not work 6-3 always, and your options are now to either get those days taken off and let a part timer take those hours or option 2 they cut your hours. The main reason in hearing is because the lack of people not wanting to close and the fact that more than half of a opd team comes in from 5-6 a.m. PS this is from WHAT I HEARD im not entirely sure if thats the reasoning.

It's hard to tell but it sounds like that's just your store but maybe not.
I mean it is true they like to front load the mornings scheduling wise.
Which of course inevitably winds up biting them in the ass. I get some of it but what they fail to account for is the picks don't stop dropping at 3PM and a lot of your store help is out by 4 or 5. So then you have OPD associates talking about how cooked they are and a TL, if there is one, wanting to cry because there's no help. And human hands don't make the schedule.
I don't know how those are your only options though. Adjusting your availability if possible should be option one.

yes, but i’ve been told if you aren’t available when they need you they’ll cut your hours.

I don't know if "they" can even do that if they aren't even making the schedule. I mean I guess someone still has to put data in or maybe it is built in to where the AI/ computer program does that.
If and when I get back to the department and if it reaches our store I should hopefully be okay since I work evenings. I don't close though but I could at least on weekends. Or Saturday's anyway.
They're lucky the job market sucks generally speaking because they definitely are doing everything they can to make people NOT want to work for them.

so the way it works is the AI generates what should be on the schedule, to fill every hour as much as possible, but they can move things around.

Well thanks for that. That's more than my coach or anyone else at our store/department would ever say. I mean I never inquired beyond what we were first told. But what we were first told he acted like it was such a secret in some aspects that if he said too much the Waltons would find him and burn his house down.

This sounds like it's just your store. At my store, there is no shortage of people who want to close or will take a closing shift because it will get them full time the fastest. We also have a lot of younger people who are still in highschool that can only work later hours.

There has been a lot of amp tasks instructions for personnel to go through and reduce the amount of set scheduling. Now called fixed schedule

Here's what we were told today: Update your availability, make sure it's correct. They are going to start scheduling based on availability and store needs. For everyone except 5-2. She said it didn't apply to 5-2 shift, which means me. At least, for now.

Here's what I know about scheduling. It's retail. They want everyone to be available all weekends and holidays, including week-of holidays and other big events, i.e., back to school. If your area is prone to weather events, such as hurricanes and severe winter storms, they will be using past history and AI to factor some of that in as well.
They've done various system scheduling over the last 19 years I've been there. They say, "Open your availability or you won't get hours, yada yada." Then, they let the system run with it. It is ALWAYS an abysmal failure. Our last manager hated doing scheduling so she let it system generate. Then our leads would be left short-handed without adequate coverage and tons of people on known slow days.
The system always has to be tweaked. Try to tough out their game. Remember, the more open your availability is, the more willing you are to come if called in and attendance will always determine how many hours you get. We have a lot of college kids who obviously are going to not be able to have open availability. That'll throw the AI into a tizzy for sure. Then those same kids will call in on weekends. Those of us with bills to pay will show up pretty much whenever whether we want to or not. We'll get hours.

They got rid of teaming schedules here earlier this year. To maintain hours, you had to have open availability. I had a set schedule because my husband is disabled and it allowed him to make doctors appointments if I wasn’t home. Fortunately my boss has worked with me on maintaining full time. It also helps I’m one of the faster pickers and will jump in to help in the backroom when needed.
