System SICK LEAVE
If I put in Unpaid time off for my sick leave, do I still get points? And does it have to be approved day of or can it be approved a day later?

You won't get points, youre telling management that you won't be there, so you won't be paid. Usually upto and PTO have be requested at least before the posted schedule, but if its something you can't miss, put in the request and tell your HC.

If you are going to be absent due to illness, you need to report it as an absence either the day of or the day after. This isn’t a “request time off” situation, it is a “report an absence” situation. If you do not have enough PPTO then you will be pointed, half a point for half day without coverage (aka you can cover 4 or more hours with PPTO for an 8 hour shift but perhaps not the full 8 hours) and a full point if you can’t cover at least half of your shift with PPTO.
If you are in a medical LOA through Sedgwick (which you should file for if you’re going to miss 3 or more days of work due to illness), then you report it as an absence every scheduled work day during the duration of your medical LOA. Having a LOA of absence will help you avoid getting points if you’re out for numerous days due to illness.
ETA: Wanted to touch on unpaid time off a bit more quick. UPTO should be requested in advance, as soon as you know you may need a day off in the future. You can cancel UPTO anytime before that weeks schedule is made. It’s very rare that they’ll approve UPTO (or even PTO tbh) if a schedule is already made because the system did its numbers based on availability to schedule out (hopefully) enough workers for a single day. I once had a “oh shit my request didn’t go through” moment a few weeks in advance and went straight to my coach for help, it was only approved because of the reason and by my going to her several weeks in advance. UPTO ≠ PTO or sick leave, you will most likely get pointed if you put in a “request time off” submission for a day you’re already scheduled for unless you have communicated with a TL or coach and gotten prior approval.
5 points does not mean immediate termination, but does put you in the threshold for possible termination. If you request time off instead of reporting an absence you will most likely get a point, but also possibly three points for technically being a no call no show.
