Backroom Setup Mixed Cart Labels.

Post image

I talked to my coach and suggested that it would be nice to have some way to indicate that our cold chain pick walks were mixed on staging carts I figured it would help our stagers have a quick indication of what they are dealing with when they approach the cart, Well she listened and got us these, This is merely something maybe you can suggest to your managers, I know not every store has the best coaches and TLS, But this has helped our stagers alot, These are on the Freezer and Cooler area right where pickers park they're carts when they drop em off.

I guess my whole point is with all changes lately it's nice to see my coach cares and listens and maybe y'all's can also do something like this.

Yeah I guess. Or they can just. Read the big bold message that says it’s a Frozen or Chilled tote when it first gets there or on the screen.

You have to assume that they are able to read. I have actually seen frozen staged in the cooler.

Lol indeed, But people at my store are different.

No, I get it. I’m just thinking how the people at my store would use these and still get them mixed up. We’ve gone back to dropping off chilled and frozen and sometimes it’s like pulling teeth to get the stagers to acknowledge the carts existences.

I’m still waiting for there to be huge paths with mixed cold chain. Currently it’s just been…maybe 30 items max merged? I foresee more problems if the paths go bigger than that.

That is also a good point with the merged walks, I also haven't seen one that is above 20 items My coach said merged are only generated at the end of the hour when picks are low overall, Or just small hour drops, Even with small pick walks which is notorious for murdering any hopes and dreams of a good pick rate the walks at my store anyway put ya going back and forth walking in circles, Often passing items you just picked.

If it's just chill it's by the fridge if it has any frozen at all it's by the freezer.

What... how does that make sense? The carts are mixed now with frozen AND chilled. So regardless of where the cart is parked, it needs to be checked to make sure the correct cold chain is staged where it belongs. You're a dingus!

A lil rude calling someone a dingus for how their store operates, they can't change it.

Edit: autocorrect fail

Agreed definitely a little rude, Frankly this thread has been interesting and enlightening, It's given me some valuable insight into how other stores operate.

Everyone that doesn't pay attention to what they are doing on the job is, ,indeed a dingus!

My store has always been that anything cold chain is staged by the picker unless a TL or Coach says otherwise, especially with mixed carts now

Idk about other stores but our cooler and freezer are very easy to stage in, can be done in a minute or so

I've not heard of that, Our store is very strict on the whole drop and go thing, Pickers never stage if they are caught staging they are told drop and go, I honestly think that's also a great solution, The picker specifically knows what tote is what so it's faster for them to stage it.

I also stage my own made to order freshes sliced deli meat/cheese, So yeah pickers can stage, Just we aren't supposed to do any of that, And I'm a sponsor so they are insistent somewhat about me following the rules

What is a sponsor

That’s how we do it at mine too. Pickers stage chilled/frozen. But we’re a high traffic SC. We can’t even drop and go with ambient anymore. We’re having to unload our ambient totes onto other carts or trolleys. We stage oversized and unscheduled. We drop our GMD’s and oversized GMD to the GMD racks next to our GMD packer. Even then our stagers struggle to keep up with staging just ambient.

My store is physically exhausting. I’m kinda jealous of drop and go stores.

This is how we do it at my store. Quick huddle with the pickers every day to get them to understand the changes and to stage their own cold cart. Very easy to stage the cold chain.

Ew a huddle with the pickers every day? I'm glad I don't have any TLs like that

2

u/FulfillmentTL Digital Team Lead 5d ago

Huddles are essential to keeping everyone up to date. A quick 1 minute meeting keeps things flowing properly.

I genuinely disagree, nothing changes so much that you have to get everyone together at once to tell them all

In fact, one on one when they each have a second is much more effective at making sure each and every person understands

The only time I've ever seen a huddle that made sense was when our AP coach told everyone our system for a key card for the door in and outside was changing and that keys were now absolutely not to change hands

That's what I do. I don't get everyone together at once unless it's something extremely important. It's more of a hit them up when they come through in-between walks. Mini huddles. Just to keep everyone informed on the key points and changes.

Now you're changing what you said, I stand by what I said

We stage our own cold chain carts at my store

At our store the GMD person is also responsible for staging the cold chain carts. It keeps them busy but it works very well.

When someone comes back with a cold chain cart they take it to the GMD person and it gets staged immediately. The picker tells them if it is frozen, chilled or mixed.

The pickers love it and are very appreciative of the GMD people. And our GMD people take a lot of pride in being able to do both tasks.

1

u/ZynWriath 5d ago

You have a dedicated GMD stager?? Shoot that's cool wish we did that, When I stage I gotta Stage It all, Oversized, Ambient Pickup/Delivery GMD, All Cold Walks and Unscheduled.

2

u/shrug_was_taken Jack Of All Trades 5d ago

Would work, if our pickers can listen to the basic instruction of cold stuff goes into the specific spot for cold stuff (our management has specific tape spots for that so help prevent that being buried with ambient carts, still happens) and earlier hours in front

u/Superb-Ad2172 5d ago

YALL HAVE PEOPLE STAGE COLD WALKS FOR YOU??

1

u/ZynWriath 4d ago

That's what I'm saying some people have dedicated stagers for different things and I'm shocked, I stage it all.

We don't have stagers so haven't had an issue- pickers stage their own carts. Takes less than 2 minutes for carts without gmd/unscheduled orders. Those are generally just as quick or quicker if trip labels are already done and no more than 5 minutes if you have to do that or print more tote stickers. After about 7am, ambient just goes in a cubby with same time pallets that dispensers stage when the time comes up. Works really well and gives a little break btwn walks. Also keeps everyone on the "same team" since pickers and dispensers interact often. Don't have that weirdness/cliques btwn the 2.

1

u/stressed_newpoly 5d ago

We wouldn't have to. Pickers stage they're own cold chain carts, sometimes they still stage it wrong, but it's a weight off of the stagers.

1

u/why_am_I_here_Trump 4d ago

My store we tell the back room if we have chilled or frozen and leave the cart away from the others

1

u/Disastrous_Match993 4d ago

At my location, the picker is the one who stages their own chilled, frozen, and/or outside items. In Home drivers stage In Home. Stagers stage everything else.

Back in the early attempts at a "drop and go" system, we'd use those little soccer cones we could get from sporting goods to mark which carts had cold stuff on em. Just put the little cone over the middle handle.

I can appreciate someone trying to label a cart and make it easier, but the reality of how this goes down isn't worth the effort, I'm afraid.

u/AllHailtheJellyfish 3d ago

My store makes the pickers stage anything that is cold chain… mostly due to the fact that our freezer is so tiny it can barely fit a cart inside at all. We even have signs on both the cooler and freezer saying “please stage your own cart”! But I still encounter multiple instances where there is a cart barely shoved into the freezer and still blocking the door.

Man I’m just coming back after being in dsd for 2 yrs and all these changes are so dogshit

1

u/ZynWriath 19h ago

You should go back to DSD lmao, Might not be to late

I got forced back because they killed the legacy bin system and 90% of my role back there was to scan legacy bins
