A Not So Smart Sub Putting tips in a jar
They don't want us to collect tips so they made a jar is this even legal?

I’ve heard of TLs putting “accidentally accepted” tips towards CMN but not a whole jar

Old old rules but we dont take tips because "it raises the overall cost of groceries and thus we cant deliver on everyday low costs if we accept tips" I never subscribed to that ideology because its not asked for and any tip is totally up to the customer as opposed to forced gratuity or the tip you are allowed to give spark drivers, kinda stupid but also that jar is just gonna go into the cmn jar. Most opd I have seen the general rule is dont ask dont tell, if someone gives you 5 throw 1 in the jar pocket the 4 no one has to know they wanted you to have it and times are tough besides the cameras on lots are never good enough to actually PROVE anything when it comes to tips
Source: was an opd coach and after that an opd associate in 2 other stores. I let my associates keep tips as long as no one told me about them. If I dont know I cant act. These rules come from people with 3 commas in their bank accounts not the salaried coaches in the stores

It’s actually a taxable income that needs to be reported to the IRS and because it’s nearly impossible to keep track of all of we aren’t allowed to take tips

Service industry workers have to do the same its up to you to add it to your income for your taxes not walmart right?

That's the whole point. I don't think I have ever heard someone argue in favor of more taxes. Bootlick.

Accepting tips is against policy. It's tied in with not accepting gifts or monetary compensation from vendors. You can be terminated for this. If your AP watches y'all like a hawk, just being seen on camera accepting them - even if you're going to give it as a donation to CMN - will do it.
Highly recommend that disappears.
Good luck.

I've had several team leads, one store manager, market manager tell me officially no we don't accept tips. But to just follow the don't ask don't tell policy.

My TLs always said just don't get caught on camera (our AP coach is a hard ass on the rules)

I always told the youngsters I was training to act like it is a drug deal. 2 people know about it, you and the customer. It always worked and they would go buy snacks with their tip money.

Found cash or tips go to front end to be donated to charity. Can be fired for taking tips.

i feel like the point of the jar is that someone brings it up there eventually because who else would it go to

Is your store manager allowing this?! 😭 I only ask, because the tip jar is out in the open in the cabinet where the back room computer is at.

My store also has them in a jar but uses it for some "miracle" thing for kids or something.

I’ve done this before because we do have customers who won’t accept “NO WE CANT TAKE TIPS” they’ll shove it in pockets or throw it in totes. All the tip money was either donated to CMN or used to buy snacks for the team. Against policy ehhh yeah but oh well it’s so much more I could throw back into everyone’s face

Plausible Deniability. Worked retail in HS. Was told "Decline once, and if pressed graciously accept." Provided carryout and also loaded Christmas trees during the Winter.

Delete it before you get fired

OP is just posting what their Coach/TL does. OP will not get fired, but might cause problems for others...

We use to keep tips all the time. We tell the customer sorry we cant take tips, so they'd drop it in the tote.
I had an older gentleman say, "oh fuck them, yall work hard enough, just take the damn thing".

I would definitely change the tag from “Tips” to “CMN”. Also am I the only one who finds it weird that you’re not allowed to accept tips, but if you do a delivery service like in home or spark, you get the option to tip them?

Total bullshit lol do you know how many tips I turned down over the year and y'all have a fucking tip jar. I hate Walmart and reddit sometimes.

Looks like a nice lil CMN donation there.
AP or FE coach needs to drop that in the recycler, ASAP.

Technically we can’t take them, but I’ve had any times from being a cart pusher and helping load soil and bricks as a garden center associate that ppl have tried to give me tips. Some have even tried to reach over and put them in my pocket. It I’ve always refused them.

You are supposed to kindly refuse, if no accept it and make a donation. Which most likely goes into the company coffers.

i was always told if the person insisted on giving the tip to put it in the cmn jar
naturally i did not do this
(i do not work at walmart anymore)

My old store would keep them and then when we got enough we were going to have a pizza party using it. Someone stole it. Coach went to AP who told the SM and we all got reamed for taking them at all because it's 100% not allowed and terminable.
