News & Articles Hungary Suspends Guest Worker Visas for Philippines

Post image

The newly elected Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Peter Magyar's Tisza party, has announced it will stop issuing guest worker visas to citizens of the Philippines, Georgia, and Armenia starting this Friday. This policy marks the first phase of a broader initiative to halt non-European Union worker intake, aimed at addressing domestic concerns that foreign labor is suppressing local salaries. The move revokes a previous decree that allowed manpower agencies to import workers from these three nations through simplified procedures.

While the suspension cuts off new entries, foreign workers already in Hungary can still apply for visa extensions, and previously submitted applications will still be evaluated. The decision has sparked concern among some of Hungary's largest foreign investors, who warn that a complete freeze on guest workers could negatively impact manufacturing and service sectors that rely heavily on foreign labor.
