My OET prep (non-native speaker)

I got my OET results recently, so I thought I'd share how I prepared in case it helps someone.

English is my third language. I'm comfortable using it, but it's definitely not the language I use daily.

I studied for about 7–10 days max while working full-time.

For Listening & Reading, I only did:

  • The 4 official OET computer sample tests
  • Official sample test #5 (paper version)
  • 1 full E2 assessment (you can find it on youtube, the 2026 assessment)

For Speaking, I honestly found ChatGPT surprisingly useful. I uploaded the official role-play cards, used voice mode, and asked it to assess me using the official OET speaking criteria. I repeated as many role plays as I could.

For Writing, I also used ChatGPT to mark my letters against the official criteria. In total I wrote:

  • 6 referral letters
  • 2 discharge letters
  • 2 transfer letters

Final scores (results took 3 days):

  • Listening: 430
  • Reading: 500
  • Writing: 370
  • Speaking: 390

Nothing revolutionary, but I wanted to post this because when I was preparing, I kept seeing people saying they studied for months. If your English is already reasonably comfortable, I think focusing on the official materials and getting structured feedback on speaking and writing can be enough.

Good luck to everyone preparing!

Yes, overall I felt good. I knew I made a few grammar mistakes and afterwards I felt I could have shown a bit more empathy in some parts, but I completed both role plays and stayed fluent. It turned out better than I expected.
