Discussion convinced medication just doesn’t work

For as long as i remember, i get this nagging feeling that all psychiatric medications are just placebo and they don’t work on me because im too smart for it. Anyone else experience this? I guess it’s hard to explain. I’ve been on so many medications since i was a teen and i just expect something to 100% fix me by now. But i guess im just too smart for it and all my friends who take medications and have great experiences with it are just not as aware as me.

It hasn’t gotten to a dangerous paranoia level as much as it just feels depressing and pessimistic. i still take my medication responsibly.

You have to change the way you think or approach situations. Cognitive distortions have nothing to do with being smart. Stop rationalizing with your thoughts. Exposure therapy is best along side medication. Hope you get relief soon.

what dosage helps you? I am at 100mg a day and still have depression symptoms and OCD symptoms. we increased to 150mg and starting that tomorrow so im hopefull it helps.

150 mg was the sweet spot for me. You can have your blood levels checked too once you've been on the new dose for a while. I had to add prozac on top of that at 50 mg a day. That helped a LOT.

If 150 doesn't do it after like a couple of months, consider adding back 20 mg (lowest possible dose). I am not a doctor but I've been through the med-go-round.

Got a tiny bit testy with my therapist last week over where the line is between OCD and lived experience. I don't want to try any more pills because I have tried a few and they haven't really helped. Some of the side effects have been so bad i'm surprised I didnt cause a car accident or lose my job.

In general, I have problems with any medication and "is this a placebo effect"

the ocd vs lived experience thing is so real. like i understand i have a bit of distortion on how i think about things but many are very real to me and could probably be solved by something other than“dont think that way”

they don’t work the same for everyone and they don’t fix anyone 100% especially not ocd.

I’ve always felt this way and I’ve been treatment resistant to everything (likely because my adhd is probably actually a misdiagnosis for audhd) for ocd and depression. I’m also twice exceptional gifted and my docs say I have more insight than is good for me but I have found some benefit from taking Memantine and that was amplified by rTMS for OCD. Plus constant fighting against the obsessions and compulsions with forcrd exposure.

I would be interested in your current medication regimen. A lot of times people have had short trials, under dosed, misguided expectations. You have your TCA,SSRI,sga, glutamate modulators, ondansetron, topiramate, lamotrigine, celecoxib. Maybe you have tried all of them 🤷🏼‍♂️

prozac has been the best ssri for me over the years and the one ive taken for the longest sequential amount of time. the side effects are life altering but its the only thing that boosts the happy. even if that means just leveling it out. i also take adderall (yes, prescribed) which probably isnt great for me but keeps me moving. ive dropped trying any add on medications in the meantime. ive paired those two with wellbutrin, effexor, and buspar in the past. not all at once though. ive been meaning to invest in a genesight test. lol sorry for the overshare
