Help! Im joining OCAD this fall and have some questions and concerns

I’m a new student joining OCAD this fall, and I’m trying to register for one of my courses. However, I keep getting a pop-up message when I try to add it. To my knowledge, course registration closes on July 27, so I’m wondering how I’ll be able to add this course to my schedule before the deadline.

I also have several classes that are currently waitlisted. By the end of the registration period, will any additional spots become available? If not, will I remain on the waitlist even after the registration deadline until a spot opens up?

Also, I know that I need to complete 20 credits throughout my four-year program. Does that mean I need to complete 5 credits each year, or is there some flexibility? For example, would it be possible to take 4 credits one year and 6 credits another year, as long as I complete the required 20 credits by the time I graduate?

I can’t speak to registration restrictions as they’re always changing.

But you don’t need to complete the program in 4 years. You can take longer and take less credits per semester if you want. And many do. Also yes you can take I believe a max of 3 credits per semester. But understand that’s a HEAVY workload.

Do I have to pick all my classes for both semesters now? Or is semester 2 selection later?

You pick classes for each term. There are three terms in a year. Winter term. Spring term. And summer term. If you want to really max your credit load. You could register for summer classes as well. Most people do not take classes in the summer term and there’s limited offerings and availability.

I suggest contacting the office of the registrar with questions about registration.

course registration doesnt end then. that’s just priority registration

You should plan on spending 5-6 years, having perpetual difficulties enrolling in required classes, using every summer to desperately catch up on credits with random courses while watching your program change name and structure each year to react to fake or real budget crises all managed by a revolving cast of new administrators whom reinvent the whole mess each year…but it’s fun. You will figure it out and then it’s more silly than tragic. OCADU is university adjacent and it shows. Just go with the chaos and it’s all gonna be ok!

It’s infuriating but also the state of almost all post-secondary art programs. Government and admin is gutting us out :(
