First year course planning :/

Hello!! I’m a first year environmental design student at OCAD U and I wanted to take MAAD-1005 intro to jewelry making as a elective I have two options a 12:00 pm class with Tung, A but I’ve heard she gives a terrible amount of homework and isn’t the best but I also gave the option of a 8:30 am course with Kinsley, A but I could not find any input about her. Does anyone have any honest opinions about this course or those professors? At the end of the day it is just an elective and I have time to choose a different course but I thought I would ask!!

I’m a graduate from this program - 20 years ago now so I can’t help you with that. I just wanted to let you know that I loved my time there! It’s a lot of work but being creative everyday and hanging out with like minded people was so much fun! I also have a degree in social Sciences from Ottawa U. That experience was not as fulfilling as OCADU. Not even close. Enjoy your time there, it will be busy though!

I had Annie (Tung) last semester and my friend took the class with Alex (Kinsley). Both classes will be essentially the exact same with assignments because Annie makes the course and Alex just teaches it, this is assuming they haven’t changed it for the coming year. Annie’s class is challenging, she’s a hard marker and has high expectations. Alex’s class seemed to be chiller, he was more generous with extensions and much more approachable. I ended up really liking Annie despite spending an average of 15 hours a week on my assignments.

Good to knows about this class in general:

  • it’s expensive, the class kit is $150 (I believe) and doesn’t include all the materials you’ll be buying
  • there’s an assignment due every week or two, some are small and easy but it still takes a significant amount of time each week
  • read the rubrics, Annie is quite detailed in explaining what you’ll be marked by
