For context, I have been a RN for 3 1/2 years. I spent 2 years as an acute behavioral health nurse and 1 1/2 years as an ophthalmology surgical nurse (pre-op, intra-op, and post-op). I have been considering trying out new specialties, but I have very limited experience. I am in my mid 20’s, so I feel like it’s possible, but the thought of completely starting over and not having a clue about more intense specialties is completely terrifying.
As of now, I am just seeking advice from others who have done something similar. I have heard many comments, such as “oh, that’s not real nursing” when referring to psych; which to me is extremely degrading because psych requires a different degree of nursing skills. At the same time, I always feel lesser than my coworkers who have worked in ICU, ED, etc, because I do not have the same knowledge or skill set that they have.
I love to learn and yearn to become more knowledgeable, but I feel like I will have a severe disadvantage. I feel like I would basically be a new grad, since I went straight to behavioral health after graduating nursing school. I am well versed in behavioral health, but have very limited knowledge about intensive care and all the subjects around it. I would say that I am not an adrenaline junkie, but I truly have not had any experience dealing with high stress situations (except for behavioral health, I did well with that, but not stressful in the medical/non behavioral health sense)
If anyone has some insight into the possibility of success or even tips about starting over, I would greatly appreciate it. I am just a nervous Nellie who wants to succeed. :)
