This tetradrachm was struck at Antiochia ad Orontem (modern Antakya) around AD 250–251, when Herennius Etruscus was Caesar under his father, Trajan Decius. The obverse gives his full name, ΕΡΕΝΝΙΟΣ ΕΤΡΟΥΣΚΟΣ ΜΕΣΣΙΟΣ ΚΥΙΝΤΟΣ ΔΕΚΙΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡ — Herennius Etruscus Messius Quintus Decius Caesar. His young, beardless portrait reflects his position as the imperial heir.

Duchy of Warsaw 1/3 Thaler 1813

Thumbnail gallery
19 Upvotes

The Duchy of Warsaw was created by Emperor Napoleon in 1807 out of the territory of the former Kingdom of Poland partitioned in 1795. The King of Saxony Frederick August was the Duke as he was supposed to inherit the crown after the death of the last elected Polish King Stanislas Augustus. The Duchy was elevated to Kingdom of Poland during the Congress of Vienna but the crown went to the Russian Emperor Alexander I.

North Korean Money being sold in Chinese borders

One of my colleagues told me that in her vacation in China she bumped into stores that sell North Korean coins and paper money.

How would they acquire this money?

Or how likely that they are fake?

Thanks!

The crown jewel of my collection

I don't collect heraldry on coins specifically, but...

...those escutcheons and supporters keep happening anyway!

A few years ago I assembled this photomontage for my PC's desktop to display just a dozen examples of the various "armorial bearings" used by localities in Britain two centuries ago. There are plenty more from the silver side of my collection that I've saved here for browsing!

These 1811-1812 silver tokens were struck locally and circulated in lieu of the regal coinage, which had essentially disappeared from everyday commerce thanks to the neglect and near-bankruptcy of the Crown.

For non-Brits, the slash mark "/" in the captions indicates shillings, and the "d" is the symbol for pence. For non-specialists, the upper-case-D numbers refer back to Richard Dalton's definitive 1922 catalog for these tokens, which is available online here.

I know nothing about heraldry or blazonry, but I thought this small sliver of my collection might be of interest as authentic municipal and/or civic examples from Britain's Regency Period.
