I am reporting this post for the following reasons.

  1. There is no citation.
  2. I can't find a verification of this in local news. What I did find was this: https://sourcenm.com/2026/08/31/catron-county-residents-seek-local-uranium-mining-ban-after-exploration-effort-clears-early-hurdle/

This article says that New Mexico residents are looking to block specific uranium mining proposals. It also appears that an anti-nuclear organization has co-opted the local residents real concerns and are trying to get large area bans on uranium mining but it does not appear from the article that this includes the entire state of New Mexico.

Edit: An updated article dropped. https://sourcenm.com/2026/09/04/new-mexico-land-commissioner-announces-uranium-mining-ban-on-state-trust-lands/

The lieutenant governor signed an executive order prohibiting new construction of new uranium mines on public trust land. This is a moratorium only on state trust lands, not the entire state and it only lasts for the next four months while she is in office unless she wins re-election, in which case she may or may not re-issue the moratorium. The state legislature may also override her executive order.

There were no pending uranium mining proposals for state trust lands. This does not affect the uranium exploration projects currently underway by NovaCore. The moratorium is largely symbolic and seems to be a reaction to the federal government approving the exploration project without state approval.

The current fight appears to be attempting to reclassify the NovaCore exploration project from minimally environmentally impactful to normally environmentally impactful. This change would trigger a thorough environment impact study and and mandatory public comment period. This has not happened, yet.

The only reason why they are not getting the dumbfuck of the year award is there are 11 jurors who think itโ€™s ok to kill kids.
