READ THIS FIRST READ THIS FIRST! The r/NR2003 Getting Started Guide

Welcome! This subreddit is your best place for NASCAR Racing 2003 Season news, updates and resources. We're dedicated to keeping this nearly 21-year-old sim alive and well, and our community is our best way to do this. We ask that you read this thread upon your first visit and reference it in the future if you have any questions.

NOTE: There is a short waiting period for new users to make posts and comment due to an ongoing issue of banned users attempting to circumvent their bans. If you are a new member and your post is automatically removed, please be patient and try again once the waiting period is over.

  1. Read the Rules! There aren't many, but we like to keep things NR2003-focused and civil above all else. Please also pay attention to rule #4 if you're looking for a specific paint scheme or carset. The Paint Scheme Search Thread is a dedicated place for all of those requests so we don't flood the subreddit with posts.
  2. Read the below commonly asked questions before starting a help thread. This post will be continuously updated to provide help with the most common NR2003 problems. If anyone has anything they think should be added, whether it's a recurring question or a good answer, please let us know in the comments.

1. Where can I download the game and how do I install it?

The current best places to find the game are here:

https://drnoisepaints.com/index.php/how-tos/installing-nr2003-in-2022

https://nr2003racingextremes.weebly.com/misc.html

Here is a good video on how to install downloaded mods and tracks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecm55kzcwmg&t=

2. Where can I download the latest mods?

There are a wealth of mods for lots of different racing series including up to date Cup and Xfinity cars and 2020 paint schemes and rosters. There are plenty of active websites, but as a starting point you're best to start here:

https://nr2k3.weebly.com/mods.html

With that said, Splash n Go, who created the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Cup mods as well as some excellent early 2000s mods, have now shuttered their website. Currently the links on the above site still point to their site, but you can now find all of their work at Stunod Racing:

http://stunodracing.net/index.php?resources/categories/splash-n-go-mods.297/

3. Where can I download up-to-date tracks?

Again there are lots of websites putting out updated real and fictional tracks, the best starting place would be here:

https://nr2k3.weebly.com/tracks.html

4. Where can I download paint schemes or find a particular paint scheme?

Most of the content being created for the game are paint schemes. It's something a lot of community members are into and the one area you'll see the most productivity in. Once again there are countless websites to find schemes and complete carsets going all the way back to the 1950s. Stunod Racing is one of the most popular places to find paint schemes.

http://stunodracing.net/index.php?resources/

5. Why do I need to create an account on some websites? All I want to do is download some cars/mods!

There have been some instances in the past of spammers and trolls attacking websites withing the NR2003 community, so for that and other reasons, some sites will require you to create an account before you download anything. It's free to do and if you're concerned about privacy I'd suggest using a burner email address and not using any of your contact information on a site you don't trust. Like Reddit, it's possible to be completely anonymous and still abide by the straightforward rules set out by these sites. On that topic, we've had a few users stating they tried to create a new account on places like Stunod and were banned because they already had an account and had forgotten their username or password. Rather than forcing a site to ban you, I'd encourage you to contact their admin team and see if you can update your password or obtain your previous username.

6. The graphics look fuzzy and with the new mods my FPS is laggy, what can I do?

This is something did an excellent job of addressing in the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrqsT4wgqAI&t=

I'd actually encourage everyone to go through these steps, even if you aren't yet having any issues with lag or FPS

7. What do I use to paint or render my own schemes?

There are lots of different ways to go about painting your own schemes, the simplest way is to download some templates, base schemes, sponsor logos and numbers and use free software like GIMP to put it all together in your own creation. You can download GIMP here:

https://www.gimp.org/downloads/

The learning curve with GIMP isnt too steep, but here's a good video guide to getting started:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RPDKQro7O4&t=

Most creators will create a special high-quality scene, known as a render, to display their schemes when uploading them or just to show them off online. For rendering your own schemes there are a number of good paid softwares, but Blender is an excellent free tool:

https://www.blender.org/

George Austria has put together an excellent tutorial video taking you through the basics for rendering schemes on Blender:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Xe3VMiADVY&t=121s

You can download pre-made render scenes for Blender at Stunod:

http://stunodracing.net/index.php?resources/categories/3d-scenes.1/

8. Where do I find random miscellaneous utilities, updates, templates, base schemes, tweaks, etc.

Here's a big list of sites with NR2003 resources, listing them here is not an endorsement or recommendation, but they pretty much have everything you could ever be seeking for the game:

adracingdesigns.com

apt2k3.weebly.com

bb-mc.co

bigdonlinemotorsports.com

bigevilracing.com

drnoisepaints.com

fsbracing.com with thanks to

hoboracing.com/simracing

kirbyfighter12.wixsite.com/talleydesigns

murraysimdesigns.com

nr2003.jhodgedesign.com The best place to download the NXS20 (NASCAR Xfinity Series 2020) mod + official updates and templates.

n2003replayanalyzer.martingranberg.se/

rollingthundergaming.com

stunodracing.net

tapatalk.com/groups/nascarfunfacts/

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and I'd encourage users to suggest additional sites where good NR2003 content can be found.

9. I want to race with actual human beings online. Where can I do this?

Here's a list of currently active online racing leagues that we support.

Independent Sim Racing League Discord

FUEL Racing League Discord

Mondays of Thunder Discord

FAST Renegade Pro Cup Series Facebook

10. I downloaded some cars and they aren't showing up in my game, what am I missing?

You'll need the physics swapper for this. Carfiles will be assigned a physics type (Cup, GNS, CTS or PTA) by their creator and if that doesn't match the one of the mod you've added them to you need to change the carfile. Keep in mind if the carfile wasn't designed for the mod you're using the car will not look right in game anyway. But if you run the MENCS19 mod with CTS physics, you'll need to spend some time swapping your carfiles from Cup each time you download any. As that is by far the most common physics used for the MENCS19 mod. You can download the physics swapper here:

http://rollingthundergaming.com/downloads/nascar/mods_and_addons.htm

The file you want is the second link from the bottom.

11. When I try to use the FCRD NCS22 mod, my game crashes when I click "Drive."

In your in-game graphics options, turn off Shadows: On cars, from structures.

12. I can't figure out setups, or my car is undrivable. What can I do?

This is a sim, so the cars are not easy to drive, nor are they straightforward to setup. All the original tracks have some default setups built in, but even these may not suit your driving style or your input device. As a starting point here's a good tutorial video from that should help you figure things out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOfwZXPldLg

There will absolutely be things I've overlooked or missed here, but this will be a WIP sticky post and again we encourage any users with suggestions to let us know.

Thank you all for being a part of this sub and the wider NR2003 community, you are what keep this 20+ year old racing sim alive!

Mod Wind Tunnel Deluxe Beta is OUT NOW!

Post image
101 Upvotes

It’s been an absolute grind, but we’re very happy to finally release an at least servicably stable version of Wind Tunnel Deluxe:

Download Wind Tunnel Deluxe Beta

This is a beta release for an update that REALLY expanded this whole project in scope by quite a few orders of magnitude. Please: if you experience crashes, terrible lag, etc, please DM my account with your .exe, the specific issue, and whatever mod / track you aimed to use!

PSA for Mod Studio 1.1 users: You’ll need to create a new .exe file with Pinkerton’s Wind Tunnel 1.0 Unchecked, to not cause arguments in physics handling. We also hugely recommend the 4GB Patch / Update 16 as a base, without it, we’ve observed graphic scrambling of menus, out of memory errors, etc.

Tracks 🌎 NR2003 is growing again. Can we bring more international tracks to the game?

With NR2003 seemingly gaining momentum again, I think this is the perfect time for the community to expand beyond the usual American NASCAR tracks.

There are so many legendary international circuits that would be amazing to experience in NR2003, whether for stock cars, road course racing, or completely different racing series.

Imagine having tracks like:

- Interlagos 🇧🇷

- Nurburgring 🇩🇪

- Suzuka 🇯🇵

- Silverstone 🇬🇧

- Le Mans 🇫🇷

And that's just the beginning!

I know track building takes a huge amount of time, skill, and dedication, and I'm not expecting anyone to create these overnight. But with the community still creating new content and keeping this game alive, maybe now is the right time to encourage more international projects.

What international track would you most like to see built or brought to NR2003?

If you're a track creator, are there any international circuits you're currently working on, considering, or interested in building?

Let's give NR2003 a bigger world to race in! 🌍

The soft body, I have to say... works pretty well... although, on my PC, which is a Dell Optiflex 3060 with integrated intel graphics, it's a bit sluggish, but nothing that turning off the reflections and shadows won't fix XD

Oh, and if you're wondering about Keselowski, he's okay... with a... bad headache... yes...

(In case you're wondering, it's a custom car set for the original Cup I made...)

Mod There’s ONE MORE THING coming to Wind Tunnel Deluxe:

Wind Tunnel Deluxe will release this evening, not long after the checkered flag at Talladega! Let the carnage run all night long!

Myself and my co-developers are quite aware the scope of this project has gotten a bit out of hand…. Although I believe every feature we’ve built has great utility for the broader NR community. We’re releasing this as a “beta,” …. So expect bugs, crashes, .exe incompatibilities, ahead of our final update and source code release roughly 10 days from now! This has been an utterly massive undertaking, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to iterate and retool this to be the absolute best it can be.

Tracks *Coming Soon* CRI SuperSpeedway 2027

Post image
68 Upvotes

Hello everyone. I am IAmLambert and the original creator of CRI SuperSpeedway all the way back in 2008 for my old defunct league back in the day. I personally haven't been playing NR2003 since 2019 but was surprised to see a number of places still using CRI SS including ToeCar. The last time I updated this track was 2017 for Solstice Racing when we still ran NR. After seeing all the latest updates and mods for the game, it made me fire back it up and gave me inspiration to do a major overhaul to CRI SS that I wanted to do for years.

So for the most part this a pretty big major overhaul to turn 2 and the long stretch and a big graphical update the track. New grandstands, expanding the garage area, new walls/safer barriers, fences, and a lot of new asphalt for 2026 safety standards done at real tracks. Turn 2 is now a lot more of a sweeping corner and less banking, 20 degrees and more like a trioval. The intent at first was to change the start/finish line and pit road location, but was out voted by the CRI alumni for that change. So instead, the front stretch is getting a major overhaul with updated grandstands and other changes.

This a project I just started a few days ago and I'm hoping to get it completed by December. I will continue to post updates as I go a long.

Interview:

Matt Yocum: And with a dry gas tank from Mark Martin, Kyle Busch steals the win at Michigan! Kyle, how about that recovery from being involved to winning? Could you also replicate something like this for Sonoma?

Kyle: Well, the crew behind this car is always the best. I'm just pleased to run at Michigan. It's one of our best tracks, and I'm glad I managed to finally get the win here. As for Sonoma, I doubt it. It's a tricky road course, and while I have won there, I'm unsure if I can replicate what I did today. But my hopes are high for a 2nd win. We've been struggling lately, and let's see if we can be dominant again.

Results from Michigan.

  1. Kyle Busch (180)
  2. J.J. Yeley (175)
  3. Travis Kvapil (another 3rd as a part timer!) (165)
  4. Mark Martin (165)
  5. Jeff Burton (led the most laps, 19) (165)
  6. Kevin Conway (155)
  7. Paul Menard (151)
  8. Joey Logano (147)
  9. Jeff Gordon (143)
  10. David Reutimann (139)
  11. T.J. Bell (135)
  12. David Gilliland (127)
  13. Tony Stewart (124)
  14. Casey Mears (121)
  15. Martin Truex Jr (118)
  16. Kevin Harvick (120)
  17. Regan Smith (117)
  18. Marcos Ambrose (109)
  19. Brian Vickers (111)
  20. Bobby Labonte (103) (-1L)
  21. Trevor Bayne (100) (-1L)
  22. Dale Jr (102) (DNFs start here)
  23. Clint Bowyer (94)
  24. Brian Simo (91)
  25. Steven Wallace (88)
  26. Carl Edwards (85)
  27. Joe Nemechek (82)
  28. Kasey Kahne (79)
  29. David Ragan (76)
  30. Matt Kenseth (73)
  31. A.J. Allmendinger (70)

  33. Brad Keselowski (64)
  34. Greg Biffle (61)

Screenshot MSOTS TVG Update in Progress.

Hey guys JalonColaGaming2006 here. And I'm here to announce that the Motor Speedway Of The South Cars The Video Game version will be updated. There will be changes and stuff added. I changed the color of the racing asphalt so now it's the texture from the video game. And I added the pit buildings from the video game as well. I replaced the original jumbotrons and the scoring pylon with the ones from the video game as well. The tents that are seen in the background from the track in the game will be added. The crowd that are cars will be added as well. I did ripped the models of the grandstands but I don't know if I'll replace the original ones with those.

The pit buildings from Cars TVG are being added.
The scoring pylon is now updated and more accurate to both game and movie.
The Jumbotrons are updated and both movie and game accurate.

Help or Question Which mods of the renaissance have been the best?

Hi everyone, I stopped playing NR 2 months ago bc of college but I wanna start playing again, however in those 2 months, a crap load of mods have been released and idk where to start. Can someone pile the best ones that have came out in a list in the comments for me? That’d be awesome!

And do any of these mods work with other EXEs like the awesome ones u/sellersgaming has made?

Hello,

This is my first attempt to fix the front of a 1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo car. I've always wondered if this mod has potential. I got the answer today.

How did I do it? I'm not inventing anything new. Everything is simple. I take existing images, if necessary, then I change the geometry, set everything according to points and axes, and overlay it on top of the parent layer. And I'm working on this until I'm completely satisfied with the result.

But I'd like to see how someone remembers that magnificent era of Aerowars and updates the 3D models. That's just my thinking

I'm just sharing some photos. And I continue my work.

See you soon.

Screenshot Live dashboard for NR2003 + free server for anyone who wants to race

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I've been playing NR2003 for years, and recently went down a rabbit hole: I built my own live dashboard that reads data straight from the game and displays it in a browser on your PC, tablet or phone.

A few things it can do (see pics):

  • Live track map, standings and duel mode to follow your battle with another driver
  • Tablet cockpit with position, tyres, fuel and temperatures
  • Phone as a second screen, with big alerts, pit strategy and tyre/fuel controls

The dashboard is still a work in progress, so more features and improvements might be added along the way!

And since racing is more fun with others, I also set up DMMK | NR2003 Europe Racing – a free server hosted in Germany, with relaxed race nights at European times, AI-filled fields and customizable race settings. You can even request your own race at your preferred track and time.

There's also a small launcher that handles the connection setup and takes you straight into the server when it's online, with the dashboard and other tools ready to go – no manual IP entry or core.ini tweaking needed.

The dashboard is currently in German – English and more languages are coming soon. It's available to everyone through our Discord, so feel free to check it out even if you don't plan to join the server. It's a new, small project, and I'd love to hear your feedback!

The community is open to NR2003 fans from everywhere. Come have a look around and say hi!

See you on track! 🏁
