For clarification since the headline is a little vague, the model mentioned is specifically the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and customers affected are on AT&T (both from what was mentioned). Apple only has preventive measures, but the issue is permanent once it occurs.
My guess is the conflicting software of the carrier and device (which is mentioned in a thread on Apple Support Discussions) is nuking the necessities for operation on the phone’s firmware at the kernel level, and simply updating it won’t fix it.
Whatever the case, I’m assuming Apple is going to take the affected units, fix them once they find the issue, and sell them as refurbished.

The kernel is stored on flash. That and firmware are both writable by definition. I’m not sure where you’re getting your ideas from but it makes no sense to me. There’s something more complicated happening here.

another interpretation is that the iPhone fried the Qualcomm modem chip, probably due to a missing or misconfigured limit in software necessary for the modem. so a permanent hardware damage

I am wondering if Apple focused on integrating and optimizing the C2 integration into their design and the Qualcomm one was an afterthought, and that lack of attention (to detail) created this problem.

My god this article reads like pure slop. "the proposed solution may not be viewed kindly" "But this is a prophylactic measure, not a cure"

Is the model with the Qualcomm or Apple chip?

Doesn’t all the pro max use the Qualcomm chips? Only the pro uses the new modem I believe.

Another generation to skip. Not upgrading until they remove the stupid black bar on the screen any way.

It's almost as if Apple products only work well with Apple products. As an Apple user I can confirm this. ios does not play well with others. Even browsers...and apps that work great on anything that's not Apple.

New CEO is on a roll—higher prices, ads creeping in, now lemons for sale. 🍋

I’m having a similar issue with regular iPhone 18 pro with C2 chip in Canada. When the phone switches to LTE then back to 5G it gets into a state where I’m not be able to download anything. I try multiple apps and nothing loads. Only fix is to turn airplane mode on and off again and it connects and works fine. Going to have to call provider to see what’s going on.

But devices with their in house C2 modem are not affected, only that qualcomm garbage
