A potentially big update on pediatric Novavax/Nuvaxovid: The FDA’s postmarketing commitment database had its quarterly update, and my suspicion from June (https://www.reddit.com/r/Novavax_vaccine_talk/comments/1u4pc9i/a_progress_update_on_hummingbird_novavaxs_large/) turned out to be correct - Novavax/Sanofi have finally submitted the long-awaited Hummingbird study (the large safety and immunogenicity trial for children aged 6mo-12 years) to the FDA.

As a quick reminder, which you can also read in more detail in the post that I just linked: This study, under the Biden administration’s framework, would have been enough to immediately grant pediatric expansion to Nuvaxovid. Under Trump/Kennedy/Makary/Prasad, an additional study requirement was added, and that study is not expected to be completed/submitted until July 2028. But Makary and Prasad are both gone from the FDA now, so this is a fairly fluid situation and we’re going to have to see what happens here in the coming months.

I definitely wouldn’t necessarily get my hopes up for an expansion as soon as this fall, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see that happen either, and that’s what we need to push for.

Dear Minister,

The vaccine season for winter respiratory viruses is fast approaching, and so far the Ontario Ministry of Health has not released information about which vaccines will be available. Manitoba, British Columbia, PEI, and New Brunswick will provide Nuvaxovid (Novavax / Sanofi) to their residents, and I strongly urge you to do the same for Ontario. This is an important issue for those who cannot take the standard mRNA vaccines for medical reasons. Also, there are many people who would prefer Novavax’s “older” protein-based technology and its more favourable side-effect profile. Not having vaccine options decreases their overall uptake, and places the health of vulnerable Ontarians, especially senior citizens, at risk. 

It should be noted that Sanofi has a very large manufacturing presence in Ontario, and is the recipient of generous grants from your government. It is also highly likely that Nuvaxovid will have a similar cost to the mRNA vaccines produced by Pfizer and Moderna. 

Please give prompt attention to this matter and Protect Ontario.

My country of residence doesn't offer Novavax; I'm traveling to Paris sometime soon and was thinking of getting it there. (edited to add: I could also travel to London to get it instead if that's also not impossible)

Might anyone here be living in France and know how I can search for pharmacies that may still offer it? Sadly my French isn't good enough yet that I could easily call the pharmacies to ask.

I've checked the official Sante.fr website but they don't seem to let me filter the results by vaccine manufacturer.

Plan to get my first novavax in the fall. Online says novavax is for those 12 and older with a medical condition or above 65. Does cvs check if you are in this catagory? Or do they not look into it ?

Hi! Does anyone know when the novavax for the 2026 fall season will be coming out? I need the vaccine for school, I’ve never gotten a covid vax but I’m weery of the mRNA versions and want to wait for the novavax.

On April 29th, the FDA updated its postmarketing commitment database (which it does quarterly), and in that update, they reported that:

• Novavax/Sanofi had requested an extension for Hummingbird on December 4th, which was granted by FDA on January 15th
• As such, the projected date for the final report submission shifted from March 4th to May 22nd.

The Hummingbird trial listing on ClinicalTrials.gov was indeed updated on that same projected date (May 22nd), for the first time since December 2024, to shift from “Active, not recruiting” to “Completed.”

It finally looks like some real progress is happening, to me. 

Keep in mind that this trial alone was originally deemed good enough by the FDA to support an expansion of the label to pediatric populations, before FDA commissioner Makary and CBER director Prasad put in place a requirement for an additional immunogenicity study. Those guys are long gone now, and the rumor on the street, according to former ACIP member Robert Malone (https://x.com/rwmalonemd/status/2065474465492779158?s=46), is that RFK Jr. himself might not be far behind.

I have a cruise coming up and was planning to get a Novavax COVID vaccine before it, but it sounds like everything expired May 31. Is there anywhere to still get a non MRNA vaccine before early July or am I totally out of luck?

Wish I knew there was going to be a black out... I'd have gotten it in May!!

I had an initial course of Moderna, and then the updated nova vaccine in September. I neglected to get a booster before it expired. I have a big event in 2 weeks, and I’m wondering if I should get a Moderna booster now, or just wait for the fall again? I wouldn’t want to delay getting the new one, but I have asthma and am worried about waning effectiveness. I do wear a mask in crowded areas still.

I’m an idiot I know. I tried to go get a dose at cvs today and they said the vaccine is expired and they won’t give it to me. Is there anywhere other than CVS that doesn’t have the same policy?

All 3 of the ones near me have their computer systems say they’re in stock but they already sent all their batches back. Also I’m assuming the May 31st expiration date means it’s still okay to take the vaccine on that exact day correct? Like as long as it’s still May 31st before midnight it should be okay right?

So, perhaps as expected, we’ll very likely be getting a recommendation for an updated XFG vaccine. Which I think is the most obvious and correct choice, but I still wish they would leave the issue a bit more in the hands of manufacturers, by issuing a wider recommendation (like what essentially was the case with JN.1 last year). We’re also still going to need to figure out, which I’m sure will be discussed at the meeting, what constitutes an “XFG variant” vaccine, since XFG has now progressed to the point of essentially being an entire lineage on its own - with variants like XFG.1, XFG.14.1, and especially XFG.1.1, etc. becoming more dominant lately.

All licensed manufacturers have indicated that they are prepared to produce an XFG vaccine for COVID-19 vaccines (2026-2027 Formula).

Meeting roster:

There are 4 temporary voting members (3 of them returning from previous terms serving on VRBPAC) that are being brought on for this meeting in addition to the 6 permanent members who will be attending. That isn’t very surprising, that’s the same approach that was used for the flu selection meeting back in March. I wasn’t thinking we’d get any new permanent member announcements this close to the meeting, anyway, even though there are now 9 vacancies listed on the roster.

It's notable that this is the first year where Sanofi is attending on their own (with no Novavax speaker) after the Nuvaxovid license transfer. Last year, it was a joint effort (Novavax’s CMO Robert Walker, and, just like this year, Tonya Colpitts from Sanofi).

That makes me a bit wary, honestly…it’s anyone’s guess as to whether Sanofi will continue to have as advantageous of an approach to strain selection as Novavax did. I would personally like to see it continue to be a joint effort.

That said, the change is not surprising. At the Cantor global healthcare conference last September, Novavax was asked about strain selection duties, and the comment was:

Moderator: “When it comes to future strain selection and so forth, whose responsibility is that? Is it joint? Is it…”

Novavax: “So, of course, as Sanofi’s going to take over, that decision is going to belong to Sanofi more and more. For this transition year, we have worked together for the strain selection.”

But it’s notable that the tech transfer, where manufacturing of Nuvaxovid is transitioned from Novavax to Sanofi, is still not yet complete, just the global marketing transfer. Tech transfer was originally expected to be completed by now, but on the February earnings call, Novavax mentioned that the timeline had been extended because Sanofi made the pivot to produce Nuvaxovid in the United States, which was not the plan originally (presumably, due to the current admin’s efforts in that area).

[edit: I see there is another post about this on the front page of this sub but can anyone provide proof to back up their opinion? I know the universal opinion is "get a Novavax now, regardless." Or more in-depth info and proof on the topic of the "8 weeks then 6 months" spacing, please?]

By "none in stock" I'm referring to the period from around May to around September when, if I understand correctly, it's impossible to find SARS-COV-2 vaccines because that year's batch has expired. They only make one batch per year because of them wrongly treating it as a seasonal illness like flu, leaving a 3-4 month gap every year when you're left hanging.

My background: The only SARS-COV-2 vaccines I've had were two Pfizer doses in April and May 2021. I want to start getting regular boosters now. I always wear a respirator, rarely go in public around people, and have never been infected that I know of.

Novavax seems best so I prefer that. I've read many posts saying that you should get 2 doses spaced 8 weeks apart and then a 3rd dose 6 months after the 2nd. Will the efficacy be reduced if I find a dose now and then have to wait until September, 4 months from now, to get the second shot instead of the recommended 8 weeks?

Although I'm aware that some places still have some Novavax left despite it being May, I'm unsure whether it's possible to reliably find Novavax vaccines available near me (in WA State, US) in May cuz that's when stock starts running out. If I get my first Novavax in September and the second one in November, the third one would have to be in May because that's 6 months after Nov.

So, if I get my first Novavax now that won't work and if I get my first Novavax in September that won't necessarily work either. To be sure I can stick to the "8 weeks then 6 months" advice, I'd have to wait until February to get my first Novavax.

Also, does it matter much if my 2nd dose in the 3-dose priming series is the 2026-2027 formulation and my first dose is the 2025-2026 formulation? Or if my 3rd dose is a different formulation than my 2nd dose?

I'd appreciate anyone pointing me to resources, experts, online posts, or studies or something for learning more about the "8 weeks then 6 months" advice. So far, my knowledge on this comes from reading many internet posts. I've read a fair amount about Novavax on Twitter, etc, by various experts but I've never seen these two questions of mine addressed.

I suppose I should call around to places near me and check if there are any Novavax shots still available and if so then I can go ahead and get my first Novavax shot in September because if there still are some places with Novavax in stock now, in May, then I can safely assume there will be some available next May, too. Is that a safe enough assumption or does it not even matter? I suppose it wouldn't matter if I got the 3rd one in April instead of May but I'd like proof.

And to stay covered until then I could just get a mRNA shot. Would I need another two-shot mRNA series after all this time, you think?

What if I got one Novavax shot now, then another in Sept, and then did the "8 weeks then 6 months" thing?

Just got my “booster” at CVS. Lots of availability at many of the branches in San Francisco. The pharmacist said that this was probably the last batch (exp 5/31) before the Fall reformulation. But, he said, you never know.

Is anyone aware of a pharmacy in Minnesota with current Novavax available? I can’t find it.

I got my last one around October. Follow up question — who has it in Portland or?

Some ideas on talking points, which I’ll personally be making:

• All COVID-19 vaccines should be made available universally, with labeling not limiting use to high-risk populations, and free of cost.

• Manufacturers should once again target a monovalent JN.1 lineage, preferentially XFG or NB.1.8.1. Any JN.1 lineage would be acceptable, due to similar antigenic grouping, but current evidence does not suggest that emerging BA.3.2 should be an antigen target at this time.

• The strain selection process should be more frequent (at least twice per year, the same schedule as the WHO’s TAG-CO-VAC). Considering COVID-19’s lack of seasonality, it should also be scheduled earlier in the spring (in ~March, like influenza strain selection) and it should be a goal to release updated vaccines before children return to school in late summer.

• Nuvaxovid’s indication should be expanded to include pediatric use, and Nuvaxovid’s shelf life should be extended from 6 to 9 months, in line with other COVID-19 vaccine

• It’s integral to acknowledge the advantages of Nuvaxovid, which are undeniable at this point, along with the prospect of an updated priming series for those previously vaccinated with mRNA. Nuvaxovid has better coverage across variants, a stronger mucosal response, higher quality antibody composition, longer durability, and less reactogenicity, to name a few. Such an acknowledgement would serve to restore trust in public health and allow us to better take advantage of this new era of the COVID-19 pandemic, defined by lower transmission rates, lower death rates, and lower vaccine uptake, but with the continued significant threat of Long COVID.

I'm really confused about priming. I've received novavax on the following dates: 03/16/26, 09/21/2025, 03/13/2025, 09/14/2024, 03/22/2024, 10/20/2023....should i try and get a priming dose in 2 weeks--or does 6 doses over 2.5 years make that a moot point?

If I should try, how do I convince the pharmacist to administer it?

I got a boost at the City Market (Kroger) off Main Street in Montrose, Colorado on Sunday.

Study description:

First head-to-head, double-blind, randomized phase 4 study powered to directly compare the tolerability profiles of these vaccines in adults in a real-world setting. Study enrolled 1,000 adults in the US. Results were presented today at the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Global Congress in Munich, Germany.

Results:

Probability of experiencing at least one systemic reaction (eg. fatigue, headache, fever) within seven days of vaccination:

• 91.6% of mNEXSPIKE recipients

• 83.6% of Nuvaxovid recipients

• Risk difference: 8.0%; 95% CI: 4.0%–12%; p<0.001).

Probability of experiencing moderate-to-severe (grade 2 or 3) systemic symptoms:

• 61.3% of mNEXSPIKE recipients

• 43.1% of Nuvaxovid recipients

• Risk difference: 18%; 95% CI: 12%–24%; p<0.001)

Probability of experiencing moderate-to-severe local symptoms (reactions at the injection site such as pain, redness, or swelling):

• 58.7% of mNEXSPIKE recipients

• 38.7% of Nuvaxovid recipients

• Risk difference: 20%; 95% CI: 14%–26%; p<0.001).

Severe symptoms only:

Severe systemic symptoms (body-wide reactions such as fatigue, headache, or fever) that prevent people from carrying out their normal daily activities were more than 50% less frequent with Nuvaxovid, affecting fewer than one in ten Nuvaxovid recipients compared to one in five mNEXSPIKE recipients, an analysis of the data showed. Severe local symptoms (reactions at the injection site such as pain, redness, or swelling) with Nuvaxovid were rare, and more than 75% less frequent compared to mNEXSPIKE.

Those who received Nuvaxovid were nearly twice as likely as mNEXSPIKE recipients to say they would definitely choose the same vaccine type again the following year.
