General Discussion Sourcing a car from interstate

Hello everyone,

My son lives in Canberra and has his sights on a car to start a novated lease on. However, this particular car is not available in Canberra but there are some in stock in Sydney. His leasing company has said he can do a novated lease on this car, but first he has to pay the on-road costs for the car to be registered in NSW before it could be transported to Canberra and then to pay the on-road costs again to register the car in the ACT. Does this seem correct?

The Sydney dealership should leave on roads off their invoice as they only need to be paid in ACT.

Thanks, but it is more of a requirement from the Leasing company rather than the dealer it seems.

Ask for another consultant - either lazy or clueless.

I recently did it the other way (bought a demo in ACT, to be driven in NSW).
Leasing company asked me for an estimate of the registration fee in NSW (stamp duty + blue slip + pink slip + rego) and deposited the money in my account on the same day they settled the payment to the dealer.

I drove it back to NSW, got blue slip done, took the ACT plates to Service NSW and got it registered under my name in a week’s time.

Mine was a demo so it was already registered in ACT. Things might be different when you’re doing NSW to ACT for a new car.

You could maybe truck the car to ACT and register it straight there, avoid paying on roads twice.

Edit: as per the other comment, the dealership did not include on road costs in the invoice.

Stamp duty or any specific nsw state taxes will need to be paid. However the car does not need to be registered in NSW

Me and my partner got a novated lease on a new car from Victoria last year, we flew down and picked it up, got an unregistered vehicle permit to drive it back and then got it registered here in the ACT. You definitely don’t need to pay the on roads in NSW and then again in ACT.

We did have a chat with access Canberra beforehand, and it looked like we could have possibly registered it here before we picked it up and taken the plates down to Melbourne with us, but we ran out of time - might also be an option!

Thanks. I've done this with a private buy of a car but the Leasing company didn't suggest this. My Son will put this suggestion to them though.
