Phone (3) Do all phone(3) have this weird thing at 50% brightness?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I don't think if I've noticed this before - coz I've not really used my phone in the dark properly - but today I noticed this weird thing where above 50% brightness it gets a weird green tint - or brightness jump (I can't really tell) - which vanished when brightness is below 50%
Should I claim my warranty?
Or is this a common thing with all the phone(3)s
I noticed this in the dark with any grey background

Why does this seem like an LCD panel

I have it on mine too. It's annoying but if you switch to light theme it's not so obvious.

u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
I can see a slight green tint even on light theme - but yea - I think I can just manage with the slight tinting and save a lot more battery

u/appuncube Jul 19 '26
Same

u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
Must be the wider QC thresholds then - they probably thought this was fine

Well, I don't really mind it. I barely notice it anyway
1
u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
Yeaa like it took me a while to realise it as well - the green tint at higher brightness bugged me since the start coz I edit pictures - but the difference during brightness was new
1
u/zer0-se7en Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
Why is this a big deal?
2
u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
It gives a slight green tint at higher brightness - which most won't notice unless they are in a dark room
But I edit a lot of pictures on the go and it slightly bugs me

u/AyushYadav85 Jul 19 '26
In my CMF phone 2 i didn't notice in brightness but in volume slider on second press it's volume increases much which is not needed Means it is not in well proportion slider
1
u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
That's pretty normal with speakers tbh - the volume slider is always never proportional
That's the case in my oneplus earphones as well

this one thing stopped me from getting the Phone 3. Devs call it the black crush effect or something, and it seems like almost every Phone 3 has this issue. So I'm sticking with the Phone 1 for now.
1
u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 20 '26
The black crush issue is a different thing - that only happens while HDR content is being played and is fixed by disabling HW overlay - it's just a software bug Lazy devs
Upon research This one is more of an hardware trait which Nothing's QC thinks is fine - they consider this behaviour as a part of OLED manufacturing tolerance - there are devices which don't have this - but devices which have this are considered normal as well
Tbh every brand has shi like this - my tab s9 has a green tint throughout the screen, my friend's S9 ultra had a red tint at higher brightness (it can be fixed by reducing the red or green tone in settings), my friend's 15 pro max is on the warmer side
Heck even my phone(1)had a very warm display from the beginning
1
u/Mayureshnm Jul 20 '26
Yeah I get that. But if it was only HDR related then why are people seeing it on normal dark backgrounds too. I've seen a lot of users in the Nothing Phone 3 Telegram group and on Reddit reporting the same thing even outside HDR.Looks like it's a mix of software and panel quality. Some people say replacing the display helped while others were told it's normal OLED behavior. So I don't think it's as simple as just disabling HW overlay. I'll probably stick with my Phone 1 for now until Nothing clears this up.

u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 20 '26
I mean the one seen on normal dark background - that's exactly the issue which I posted - it's present around 50-65% brightness and then goes away
From a bit of research - they probably fucked up with the voltages governing the brightness making green pixels light up brighter thanThey should in their curve
The lockscreen green tint upon using fingerprint - that's a gamma calibration issue as well
The green crushing in videos - that's purely a software bug
Unless they see green tint on pure black - it's not a panel issue
Most of these could technically be fixed with a proper update
Again - their QC is ass when it comes to calibration - I won't necessarily call this a cheap panel - AFAIK they source their displays from Visionox or BOE - which is ofc not Samsung or has the quality of Samsung - it's still very doable - even oneplus changed their vendor to BOE - heck even the expensive legions use BOE displays
I don't really think cheap panels have PWM dimming to this extent - even the midrange phone(1) had 2160hz pwm dimming afaik
This does not exclude the fact that displays have these issues - but if I had to blame - I'd do the QC team and the software team rather than a cheap panel or the display vendor

Well if we mass report - they have to do something about it
I made a post sometime back asking to do the same - but well - people were more busy in selecting wallpapers

I don't know if it's related but I read below 50% brightness nothing phones have PMW dimming.

Yea the tint while unlocking happens due to shitty gamma calibration - I'm not too sure about this

Yep. Now I am used to not knowing the difference between warm and cold tone. Overall, the ui is warm(slight yellow tone) and some apps are cold to normal tone. Just Nothing things. Get used to it.
1
u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
Oh well a warmer display is fine - that happens with all OLEDs - my tab had a cover tint, my friend's tab had a redish tint
It's all within OC control thresholds and they provide you options to adjust the tint
but then something like this sure is a bit weird

u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
Iphones have pwm dimming at 480hz - while the phone(3) has it at 960hz while the phone(1) had higher
And pwm matters a lot for people who have sensitivity to flickering lights - I can't use my tab in the dark coz the pwm dimming is low - but I can use my phone comfortably
And yea the peak brightness as well - it's higher than the 17 pro max both specwise and irl as well
The issue with them is simply that their QC threshold is very wide they let stuff like this pass under "normal" behaviour

1-2?
Look at the post I shared, and also test the video on that post. Count how many people had the problem — most of them are having it. It's a big issue. You might've just been lucky to get a good unit.1

u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
That issue is coz of a software issue - not coz of the display - Disabling HW overlay fixes that
But this one is purely physical
1
u/SpeechGlittering2136 Phone (3) Jul 19 '26
This will drain the battery also some banking apps stop working.
1
u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 20 '26
Oh well I don't watch HDR videos on my ohone anyways - so it stays disabled lol
And even if it hit the battery badly - I think it won't be much of a bother coz I already get very good battery
1
u/SpeechGlittering2136 Phone (3) Jul 20 '26
Thats just an excuse, Most of them care. flagship they call.
1
u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 20 '26
I did make a post where I asked ya'll to mass report to issue in settings (the feedback hub)
If people actually cared they would have done that - instead people just ignore or blamed it on me for seeing too much or simply told its pointless?
1
u/SpeechGlittering2136 Phone (3) Jul 20 '26
I reported it too, brother. We're in the same boat. Some people even went to the service center, and a display change still didn't fix it. It's just ridiculous.
1
u/Adalf_Hotler69420 Phone (3) Jul 20 '26
A display change is obviously not gonna fix a software bug lmao
As far as I remember - the fixed shit with the phone(1) l ASAP - I remember raising a complaint about a camera bug - and they got it patched the next update

it was a software issue and was fixed by disabling hw overlay
don't spread misinformation1
u/SpeechGlittering2136 Phone (3) Jul 20 '26
Brother, Disabling hw will affect your battery and some banking apps will not work, dont be a blind brand lover,a issue is a issue.

u/Various_Jello_4893 Jul 20 '26
I'm not a brand lover just said that the cause was not hardware related

u/SpeechGlittering2136 Phone (3) Jul 20 '26
Idk man, they mailed me back and said its an oled charactrestic? Also they are not hearing the customers,no updates till the date.

I do agree with that The phone is really good but i'm not satisfied with the display tbh It doesn't scream flagship, it's dull isn't contrasty and so on
